June 13, 2011 (TURALEI, Warrap State) – Over 50 people have been killed in fresh clashes between armed groups allegedly associated with rebel groups and local police in Tonj North County of Warrap State, senior officials from South Sudan said on Monday.
Madut, who spoke to Sudan Tribune from Juba, the capital of South Sudan, said he has heard some people were killed and several others sustained injuries as cattle and other properties were taken.
“This is a fresh incident. There is no clear information of how many people have been killed. The reports which are still coming indicate that the fighting was in progress and that it is hard to get the details of the incident”, he further said.
Yel Mayar, a deputy governor of Warrap state government said 58 people were killed and several injured, including local police and home guards. “Yes it is true there was an attack on the area today but it was contained”, said Mayar.
“Some armed elements suspected to be loyal to rebel groups operating in the neighbouring Unity State carried out another heavy attack in Akop village today. They killed more than 24 innocent civilians and 13 policemen and two home guards. Some of them were also killed in the fighting that pushed them away from the area. 19 dead bodies on the side of the attackers were discovered”, explained Mayar.
“It was a surprise attack carried out by specialists. They were properly organised in carrying out the attacks. They avoided areas where there are police posts. They also avoided areas they knew have SPLA [Sudan People’s Liberation Army] forces.
“What they do, those who are specialized in cattle raiding, they send individuals to do an assessment to know where there are cows before they come for an attack. They send people who speak Dinka and people who had no tribal marks to avoid identification. These people are specialists in conducting attacks. They pretend to be members of the same tribe from different clan and pretend to be people looking for cows they have lost in the village during movement of cattle from one camp to the other”, said Mayar.
Gatluak Pec, a member of bordering Unity state’s Legislative Assembly denied knowledge of citizens of his state carrying out cattle raids in Warrap state.
“I talked to many people including the Panjiar County commissioner today in my constituency and nobody has told me anything about this incident”, said Pec.
He added that it was “possible some rebels carried out” the attack.

I felt shame of myself when I uttered hash words singled out Barelghazal community, but I was persuaded by some languages that did not make sense to me. We the generation must think wisely, I like Dr.machar saying the war trauma is no less surrounding the war left over, we are all in that circle, our country had been in difficult phase and yet still going the same difficult phase. Let we the generation stop looking at the names of our tribes rather holding the individuals responsible for their own wrong doings. The poor Barelghazal communities and Nuer who are depending on cattles have nothing to do with Government in Juba, what ever they paid price for is not their mistake rather the poor government in Juba. Please we are not fighting and will never fight as Nuer and Dinka, let fight only fight the corruption and how can we heal these delussions of war trauma among others.

This senseless killing of civilians has nothing to do with the God’s Army SSLA under the leadership of his excellency General Peter Gaddeit of Naath.
Please stop pointing fingers at SSLA for the crimes its didn’t commit. If there is such a killing it must has been committed by the SPLA militia whose members are buch of immortals and lack military professionalism, plus SPLA syndicates are known for their indiscriminate and senseless firing at everything moving when attacking their enemy.
Few unfortunate example of SPLA world record on massacring civilians is it’s recent massacre of Nuer civilians in Kaldak, Fangak and Mayoum and senseless and ruthless killing of sholo in GUNR, where the militia burned down more than 1000s homes in rampage when the militia was defeated by SAF friends in Abyei town of Northern Sudan.
Above all, suppose SSLA did attack and kill civilians, can any one logically explain why a great army like SSLA could just attack unarmed civilians.
Let us admit the truth, those who fought SSLA were not civilians but SPLA militiamen. Otherwise, SSLA did not involve in the fighting at all, it must be SPLA that fought with civilians when its memebers tried to loot civilians like usual but when those resisted the looting, then the militia started to kill them.

It is wise to keep our differences at political level as exporting them to our locals will only inflame tribaliwm which may lead to genocides.
Rwanda genocide has a tribal link as it was ignited when Rwandan president from Huttu tribe was killed by Tutsi rebel led by the incumbent Rwandan president and after all the innocent Tutsi civilians were the one that paid the ultimate cost or price for the crime they didn’t commit.
We, Southern Sudanese will never be united unless we refrain from tribalism and prejudice.
