South Sudan to invite Bashir for independence ceremony

June 13, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – South Sudan’s ruling party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), announced that it will invite Sudan’s president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir to attend the ceremony marking the independence of South Sudan from the North.

The former federal cabinet affairs minister and leading SPLM figure Luka Byong told the UAE-based Al-Itihad newspaper that Bashir will receive an invitation but it is up to him whether to accept or reject it.

Last January the people of South Sudan voted overwhelmingly in favor of secession, which is due to become official on July 9 at the end of the interim period as set by the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

Relations between the North and South have quickly deteriorated following the takeover of the border region of Abyei by the northern Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) as well as clashes between both sides in South Kordofan.

The ties got so sour that local media in Khartoum reported that Bashir refused to allow South Sudan VP Riek Machar inside his office and insisted that they stand in the sun to talk. Machar came across Bashir as he was leaving following his meeting with his Northern counterpart Ali Osman Taha.

Bashir and South Sudan’s president Salva Kiir are currently meeting in Addis Ababa seeking to break the deadlock over Abyei with the aid of the African Union (AU).

Byong said that preparations for July 9 are in an “advanced stage” but acknowledged that there is a shortage in hotels and accommodations for those who will attend the ceremony. He said that the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) is seeking to find quick solutions for that.

The Southern official further said that guests who were invited are well aware of the situation in the soon to secede region in terms of development and reconstruction.

So far leaders of Zambia and Liberia have confirmed attendance. The former governor of the US state of Alaska and the 2008 Republican party candidate for Vice President Sarah Palin is also reported to be attending.

The presence of Bashir might prove awkward for some attendees given his status as the first sitting head of state to be wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Omer Bashier refuse to talk with Riek Machar in his office instead of them talking in the sun!

I think Bashier has no respect with our vice president because he knew our VP Riek for so long in Sudanese history and this is why he disrespect him like this.

I am very disappointed for what he did to our vice because it;s 100% humiliation.

Bashier knows that dignity is very importance, i guess perhaps that he took some money before during their agreements in Khartoum.

I just think that war brothers other Bashier is ignorant to our VP. Thanks

Your people are inviting ghost to your delicious disk, Instead of Bashir coming to Juba he will send his explosive terrorist to blast the peaceful crowd. I hope you implement a high security check at the airport prior to the arrival of the delegates. It could be a good treaty for friendly relationship but think large.

Bashir must withdraw his troops from Abyei before he sets foot on South Sudan’s soil. In addition, Bashir cann’t enjoy Independence’s celebration while his troops are still targetting Abyei’s residence.

I really wonder; why you call your new country (South Sudan)? Don’t you guys know that Sudan is an Arabic word (means black people). Now you have a great chance to change this ugly name. By the way I am from the North, although I look typical northerner but I am 100% confident that my grand grandmother is from the south even some of my close relatives look 100% southern. Personally I hate this name (Sudan) and I wish North Sudan Govt. will change this racist name too; cuz Arabs and Turkish named us. Color is not everything a country’s name should reflect the culture, heritage and history of the nation. Mali and Niger were called (French Sudan) while our Sudan was called Angelo-Egyptian Sudan) Moreover, pls. don’t bother yourself Bashir will not come to celebrate with u and the North will never recognize your new State as long as there are unfinished business between the two parts of Old Sudan

People who hate Dr. Machar will interpret things differently.

For your information make sure that Omer is not happy with Dr. Machar because Machar was the only person among south Sudanese leader who fought hard for south Sudan independent. That is the reason that Omer didn’t allow him inter in his office.

george bol, omer Bashir knows who shot him in the battle field was riek machar’s forces and therefore, he is indeed afraid of the man to be alone with him in the office. secondly bashir prefer to talk to kir because they are the like minded. both illitrates and dictators. tah and machar are both scholars and intellectual therefore can not be compare to this two dummies you are supporting. why was kir afraid to go to Khartoum if not because he was scared of bashir? why meet in ethiopia when he is still recieving is salary from khartoum as a first vice president. you dinka need to be humiliate again by the nuers in the face of the whole world so that you can stop talking bullshits and that will happen anytime as long as you continue disturbing a sleep lion. the arab has never defeated nuer leave alone you idiots who sold their kids to the arabs for food. read dr. mading’s book a dinka like you admitting that your community have been selling children for food. may be you where sold once and that is why you have no peace with yourself and the rest of south sudanese.

My thumb up to you Mr Michael President Bashir do not have a moral respect to our heads in GOSS. I understand nothing on his act towards our leaders may be his Govt will do the same to us later future.
Let him take it seriously we no longer want arab finger in our affairs though they think what ever they wish us. South is moving forward without them. Leaving Abyei unoccupied by arab is a freedom for arab in the North.

Mr. Luka Biong´s expression of the SPLM´s desire to invite Omar Beshir to attend independence celebration in Juba is a slap on the face of the countless victims of Abyei killed, raped and dehumanised by Beshir´s forces. How low and undiginified must one bend to succumb to such humiliations? Mr. Luka Biong is a disgrace to his people. Of recent, he resigned from his post as cabinet minister in GoNU and has now filed a legal case against Beshir at the ICC. The same idiot turns around and invites the same person who is responsible for killing his people. No morals, no ethics no sense of esteem and dignity. What a waste of a human. If such a Dr. from Abyei can be so foolish and greedy, does he not reinforce those very cliches and stereotypes, that you can dehumanise a Dinka, the next moment he creeps to you for food crumbs? Afterall that has happened, you still invite Beshir and dare join the Arab League? God forbid!! Now the Messiriya and Janjaweed have gone on a hunting spree to collect Dinka slaves in Abyei and Mr. Luka Biong can only be happy if his relative is not among them!

There was Belgian Sudan, French Sudan and Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. Were they all named by the Arabs! The whole region was named geograpically as the Sudanic region. Was it named by the Arabs.

Contrary to what many believe the name came from the word Sudd , which means the obstructed areas and difficult to access.

After all it is a name even it means we are black..so what we are black and proud of black colour!

    Mohamed Ali,

your definition of love is not true, you say “Love means you don’t make enemeies.” love has different levels, to love your mother, father, and children is to take care of them and work for their welfare. And to love your friend is to have mutual responsibility to one another, and to love your wife has also different dimension (romantic love). to love your enemies is to sacrifice your right of revenge by forgiving them what they did. The idea which is not in your Islam that’s why you misinterpreted it. Although southern Sudan has suffered a lot because of the GoS we have forgiven you even though you don’t understand the concept.
