Jonglei: 6 killed, 4 injured and 1 child abducted in Thumaan

June 14, 2011 (BOR) – At least 6 people were reported dead, four children injured and one child abducted on Monday 13 June in a night attack on Thuman village in Mathiang buma [district] in the north of Jonglei states Bor County.

Among the dead, three were men, two children of age 5 and 12, and one woman who died from gunshot wounds inside their homes.

Malueth Bior, whose home was attacked, said he saw five gunmen after he was alerted by his eight guard dogs just after he had returned from seeing his cows a few metres from the residential area.

According to Bior, the attackers had initially found it hard to enter the compound but then shot six of his relatives at close range. Three of his cows were also shot dead in the 1am attack Malueth told Sudan Tribune at Bor civil hospital, where his four injured children – Keer Malueth, Ajah Malueth, Ayen Malueth, Bol Malueth aged 8 to 13 – are being treated.

Malueth strongly condemned the attack in which his six year old son Deng Malueth was abducted as he tried to escape. He and his neighbors had no guns to defend his family and children from the attackers.

“I was hopeless because I had no gun”, he said.

AJah Malueth, a girl of 13 with a serious gunshot wound to her abdomen was rushed to the theatre room for an hour-long operation in which a Gem3 bullet was removed from her body. Doctors at Bor civil hospital said her condition could not be ascertained.

Bor County Police Commissioner, Colonel Mabior Ruar who visited the area also confirmed the casualties and said he had buried the dead in two mass graves each grave with three bodies. He condemned the attack as “an act of ruthless thieves” who lacked humanity.

He said lack of arms, ammunition and man power were the major challenges facing him in his attempt to protect civilians in the vast county of Bor.

According to Col. Mabior, there the 200 police in the county who have to share their weapons depending on who is on duty. He also cited poor communication networks, lack of mobility and bad roads as some of the challenges the police face when trying to reach the scene of incidents in time.

Mabior also presented an AK 47 and Gem-3 cartridges fired by the attackers in and around the homes as an evident of the arms they were using when they assaulted the village.

Bor North member of parliament, Mr. Kuol Bol Ayom, commonly known as Adurhok Noh, told Sudan Tribune from Juba that he strongly condemned the violence in his constituency and called upon the Government of South Sudan (GoSS) to intervene in Jonglei.

He said the “vulnerable people of Bor” needed to be given credible security after they were disarmed, saying the insecurity situation in Jonglei is beyond the state’s control.

“What is happening there in Jonglei is out of control of Jonglei government. I appeal to GoSS to protect civilians of Bor”, Bol said.

He said that disarmament campaigns should be carried in all Jonglei’s counties, particularly Pibor County, home of the Murle tribe who are frequently blamed for raids and child abductions.

Bol expressed his agony over the arms given to young Murle members of the South Sudan army (SPLA) to fight renegades David Yau Yau and George Athor Deng, saying the guns were now being used by Murle youth to kill people in Bor.

Bol accused politicians and MPs who represent the Murle to have interfered in last year’s disarmament campaign in Pibor County. Their request to be given time to collect and surrender all unauthorized and illegal arms in the hands of civilians to SPLA never materialized, he said.

The Bor North MP said that the complete disarmament in three counties of Bor, Twic East and Duk has left them vulnerable to their enemies.

“Why does the government disarm some communities and left some?”, he asked. “Why does the government turn deaf ears to the people of Bor?”

Bol said the enemies of Bor County wanted them to retaliate but his people were instead concerned with South Sudan’s independence on July 9.

“Our people are concerned with national issues and always tried to ignore tribal conflicts. That is why they don’t retaliate”, Bol said.

Small weapons remain common in South Sudan despite as 2005 peace deal that granted the South the right to seceded. Insecurity through rebel movements and criminal gangs is one the main problems effecting South Sudan as it approaches statehood in less than a month.

    Dear Hon.MP Kuol Bol Ayom;

I felt so saddened about the killing of Bor children.

•Its governor Kuol Manyang’s mistake allowing guns to ruthless Murle youth in protect from George Athor and Yua Yua, but not that being the case, the Murle youth in January this year looted and killed Lou-Nuer and get away with thousands of cows. Today they killed and abducted innocent Bor children.

•Its governor Kuol allowing George Athor’s soldiers using Fangak as the meeting place for integration process but ended up killing hundreds of innocent civilians.

•What a governor letting guns loose at the hands of one tribe (Murle) while leaving other vulnerable!

My heart felt condolences goes to the deceased family and may God help them.

    Message to all Bor people,

we need to have a big meeting after July 9, we need to talk about Murle and the insecurity of our homeland.

We should not wait for murle once the war is over with the Arabs.

GOSS, ministers, Kuol and Kiir don’t care and anyone among them that will try to convince us not to do what we want should be shot right away. We need to come up with ways to protect ourselves. We need to do reconnoissance(Akaar) as it used to be before 1983. We should not wait for Murle until they abduct and kill our children. Selling children is the worst crime and we must punishment this backward community that is still living in the stone age. We will not spare anyone of them including the Murle Intellectual, the supporter of this attrocities.

Let me give thank to Malueth Bior dogs, they are better than Koul Manyang’policemen, and his MI. Killing innocents civilians become dangerous for our people in the South Sudan, because of failure leaders, they have no vision for security programme for their people in their states,Mr.Kir must be change,he is a failure leader in the world, about 800 civilians were killed under his regime without any invisegations or idenfied the killers, what kind of state we are going to acheive? May be another somalia in the South Sudan.

    Dear Quol Quot

You hate me because you don’t understand me. My best friend is from Bor. I don’t support crime or atrocities as you have said. I condemn child abduction, killing of any kind, looting and raping etc. All these evil are being practiced by some individuals from all the communities in Jonglei and beyond against each other. I don’t support crime even if it was committed by Murle, crime is crime, and it is evil. During the so called disarmament in Murleland in Pibor county, children were abducted, women raped, cattle looted and distributed between Bior and Akobo. Bol Kong got a lot of cattle stolen from Murle where he is now building a big store in Jebel Market in Juba. He personally speared one chief in a very inhumane way during that war crimes campaigns against the Murle civilians. Many crimes were committed in Murleland but the Murle MP’s you accuse of supporting their Murle people were in fact doing nothing. They only want to keep their positions with SPLA/SPLM and money into their stomachs turning a black eye or even denying those crimes, forgetting the very people who voted them in.

What you said about Bor being disarmed while Murle were not is not true, it is the opposite. Those who attack people in Bor if it is true that they came

I thought there will be no more killing and displacement in Bor again since Kuol Manyang took over as a governor, I always know with his red-owl eyes he would scare away enemies and Jongulei would be free. shame on him.

Kuol is irresponsible and corrupt, a simple proof is this, Mabior Ruar as County as a county police commissioner have just reported that he has 200 police sharing weapons, with no ammunition and means of transport. look, how come that a whole of Bor town police share weapons? shame on Kuol Manyang and his corrupt government.

another proof is, Kuol Bol has just stressed out that, Kuol government have disarmed other comunities and left some undisarmed, how can sane man tied down one bull among two fighting bulls and let other to prey on it? ya salam, wonders will never end, no matter how we try to avoid them.
Kuol MUST go, for state to be stable.

    condolences to families of deceaseds

This incident is one of the worse incidents, Murle must stop killing children and women and abduction of innocent children. South Sudan government is the most weakest government on the earth, how could a tiny murlee community manage to committed those level of crimes and yet are always getaway with every thing they committed? This is no good at all, destructing the whole family, so what left then to the life of that old man crying like child in tear. The government is persuading the whole communities to say eneough is enough let rearm ourselves and yet the poor GOSS will cut the next of law abided communities. Shame on you GOSS and shame on Kuol Manyang Juuk who rearm the Murlee for greed of power. This is by far is not toleratable, some thing need to be done to stop those crimes

The weak man who fail to defence his family in the face of the attack cannot blame any body , because your Dinka government give him weopon in the state
