Rebel leader in Juba for talks with South Sudan government
June 15, 2011 (JUBA) – A rebel leader that has been at war against the South Sudan government since May last year has signed a ceasefire with the government’s army, saying he is ready to abandon his rebellion.
David Yauyau, was flown to the capital, Juba, on Wednesday from Pibor County in Jonglei state where he had been involved in deadly clashes with the South Sudan army, the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA).
South Sudan radio on Wednesday evening announced Yauyau’s arrival. Shortly after his arrival to Juba, Yauyau told the press that he had already signed the deal and a greed a ceasefire on Tuesday in his home county, Pibor. He said he had come to finalize the talks with senior officials of the government.
Yauyau rebelled in protest of the April 2010 election results in his constituency where as an independent candidate he lost a parliamentary seat contest to the SPLM candidate. He called on the other rebel groups in South Sudan to make peace with the government and abandon their rebellions.
Other renegades include Lt. Gen. George Athor Deng in Jonglei, Maj. Gen. Peter Gatdet Yak in Unity state, Maj. Gen. Abdel Bagi Ayii in Northern Bahr el Ghazal and Captain Olony in Upper Nile state, among others.
Recently, Maj. Gen. Peter Gatdet Yak’s forces clashed several times with the SPLA in Unity state while the forces of Maj. Gen. Abdel Bagi Ayii were blamed for this week’s attacks in Warrap state.
Captain Olony carried a deadly assault on Malakal, the capital of Upper Nile in March and is thought be aligned with George Athor. The attack left dozens of people dead.
South Sudan President Salva Kiir has issued an amnesty to all rebels in the region in an attempt to unify the South before it becomes independent on July 9.
