28 killed as two buses collide on Juba-Nimule road
June 17, 2011 (NIMULE) – At least 28 people, 11 Sudanese nationals and 17 Ugandans, have been killed when two buses collided at a checkpoint approximately 40km east of South Sudan’s capital, Juba.
The Friday morning incident, which occurred along the 192km Juba-Nimule road involved coaches from the Bakulu and Baby coach companies.
Ugandan newspaper The Nation reported eyewitnesses as saying that over 40 people may have been killed.
Johnson Kilama, the northern Uganda regional police spokesperson confirmed the incident in an interview with Sudan Tribune, but said that the cause of the accident had not been established.
In an interview with Sudan Radio Service (SRS), Dominic Ojja Paul, a traffic police officer in Arapi boma [district] said: “What has happened here is that, Bakulu coach carrying the number plate of UAN 285Z and Baby coach carrying the number plate of UAP437L, one came from Juba and the other one came from Nimule side, they knocked each other here in Arapi boma.”
He added, “Many people have died. What we are doing now is rescuing those who survived and we are taking them to the hospital. Still we are trying to remove those who died.”
Those injured, multiple sources told Sudan Tribune, were either rushed to Juba’s main referral hospital or taken to Nimule hospital.
It was, however, not clear as to what actually caused the gruesome morning accident, though local residents said speeding was to blame.
In March this year, over 30 people were injured when a bus destined for Juba overturned in Koro village, about 8km south of Uganda’s northern district of Gulu.

It’s over speeding with out doubt.I witnessed with my own eyes how bus drivers are over speeding in South Sudan.This has to stop,if not,many will still loose their lives

Reckless drivers: the cause!?
I drove on Juba-Nimule road about 3 weeks ago.
I have to say the experience was scary; to share road with over 10 ton of machine, driven by careless drivers.
This accident was waiting to happen unless SS traffic police be rigorous on who they allow to drive on our soil.

Reckless drivers: the cause!?
Very Sad. However, this report has left the audiences and readers in Suspense. How are the two reckless drivers? Are the alive or dead? The inncident is said to have just occured at the check point. We the readers need to know whether the road was curved or turned. From Radio news, it was reported that the driver of Baby Coach was retaining right hand side of Bakulu bus driver that means Baby Coach driver was driving at the left hand side. In the driving rule, it is the duty of the driver to take of safe custody of their pessangers. Both drivers might have intended killing if they are alive. You may never know terrorist action. South Sudan Tarrific Police need to work hard to ensure that such inccidents should not occur again. We South Sudanese have experienced death and we do not want our people to face another road accidental death any more. May God take care of their souls and do mighty healings to those injured.
