Pro-Nuba demonstration in UK against fighting in South Kordofan

By Toby Collins

June 19, 2011 (LONDON) – A group of demonstrators from various political parties and community associations congregated outside Downing Street – the home of the British Prime Minister – on Saturday to express their solidarity with the people of the Nuba Mountains in the face of North Sudan’s military aggression.

Approximately 150 people met and displayed placards including “PDF [Popular Defense Force] told to sweep away Nuba like rubbish – will UK stand back and do nothing?” and “Nuba rebels can operate a no-fly zone themselves with the right equipment”.

The PDF is a government paramilitary force active in Darfur and South Kordofan. As North Sudan’s military aggression is stepped up in the borderlands with South Sudan, fears of deterioration into a state of war have been renewed. There are reports that North Sudan has been bombing South Kordofan.

The Nuba people fought with the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), the former rebels who are now the official army of South Sudan during Sudan’s second civil war (1983-2005). The political wing of the SPLA governs South Sudan, which will become independent on July 9.

After partition South Kordofan will remain part of North Sudan governed by Khartoum leaving around 30,000 well-led and armed fighters who are not aligned to the Northern army in North Sudan.

Nuba nationalism triggered by oppression by various Khartoum governments sparked an uprising the 1980’s which aligned itself with the SPLA, whose stated aim at the time was to change the regime in Khartoum.

However, in the 2005 peace deal South Sudan was granted the right to secede but South Kordofan – and Blue Nile another northern state that fought with the SPLA – was not granted self-rule but consultations to assess the peace deal and the relationship with Sudan’s central government in Khartoum.

The UK’s Guardian newspaper has reported that the head of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in the region estimates that 400,000-500,000 have been displaced due to the fighting. The UN have put the figure of those displaced at around 60,000.

There are reports that 3,000 people are missing. The Northern army and the PDF have been accused of conducting house to house searches in Kadugali, the main town, looking for SPLM sympathisers.

The SPLM lost gubernatorial and parliamentary elections to Sudan’s ruling party – the National Congress Party – in May. Observers endorsed the result, which the SPLM said was rigged in favour of the NCP.

South Kordufan/Nubian and South Blue Nile will conduct consultation in which they will be asked whether they are happy with the Khartoum government. Guess what?
Now, the people of our two states has seen that Khartoum government is their real enemy. Please the people of South are standing with you and you need to chose wisely during the consultations. Thanks

The war in South Kordofan was started by Al Hilu after he lost the election in a clean and fair elections authenticated by the UN and the Carter Center. The killing and and assassination of civilian in their homes and infront of their families was done by the SPLA.

Even during the war Kadugli and all the major towns in the south were safe and secure. It is only when Al Hilu was trusted and appointed as deputy govenor and then lost the elections , he started the war. Just like Gadafi either he rules or he kills people. Now the situation is calm in Kadugli and people are coming back supported and transported by the govenment.

The SPLA or Al Hilu donnot represent the Nuba people. The majority in the state voted for Haroun.

Does this mean if you loose elections you carry your gun and start killing people for not voting for you. This a wrong way.If you want democracy you have to accept the rules of the game.

Nuba mountain will be safe and secure and at the end of the day Peace and only Pease will prevail.

Dear Mohammed Ali your sense of lacking understanding will lead you no where please,go deep to the corner and fine the clear reason that make the SPLA Nothern sector go back to war,but do not just support your government of Khartoum just because you are an Arab.

Iam sorry for your polish way of analysing things, first of all it was the declaration from your faken government of khartoum that they do not need SPLA forces in SK and SB state on the first of JUNE and when it become a bolttle neck for khartoum to win it vission, you as Northern start pointing fingers at Hilu and war was initiated by khartoum.

please we are all sudanese regardless of being northerners or souhterners, the people in Nuba mountains are Nubian and they have right to stay, right to rule and right to do all whatever they want to do in Nuba Mountain inluding fighting Khartoum because all you said with your faken president are nonsense.

i want to assure you that there is no Nuba Mountains without Nubians and there is no Nubians without Nuba mountains therefore i have personally encourage Hilu to countinue depend his territory against Arad invaders.

    Dear Garang,

Thanks for very civil approch. We all want peace for us and for you even after seperation and we wish you live in your new count in peace and prosperity.

It seems to me you have an obsession called Arabs. Arabs had never invaded Sudan.

Al Hilu does not represent all the Nubians, he lost the elections and started the war ,.This is not analysis , this is a fact.

If it is true that the war started because of forced disarment , then why Agar is not fighting? He said it clearly that what had happened in Kadugli will not happen in BN. Why is he trying to persuade Al Hilu to stop the fighting and start the negotiation? Your claim was a lie release by Arman, who will survive only in such an atmosphere after seperation.Nobody said there will forced disarment, some will join the SAF some will be released.

I am Nubians and all the so called Arabs around the nuba mounatin are basically Nubians as the majority of all northerners.Ethenicity , to me has no value whatsoever!

In another place on this site , you will see Edward Lino, the head of the Abeyei Militia gang, who started all this violence to maintain their dominance over the SPLA and the GOSS.He is criticizing Embiki for his stance , which are supported by the so called international community. Here you can make your own honest and decent analysis, for the sake of the poor people of the south!

    Mr. Mohammed Ali
My friend let us be realistic, propaganda will not help solve our issues in Sudan either North or South. You are saying that it was Abdalaziz Adam Al Hilu forces (SPLM/A)northern sector that started the war but all indicators proven that it was SAF which started the war, first the SAF gave an ultimatum that they don’t need any SPLA either in Blue Nile or in Southern kordofan by the 1st of June 2011.
Mohammed is that not a declaration of war as per say, where do you think these armed guys will move to while they are the sons and daughters of that land? They were born in Southern Kordofan and you want them to move away from their motherland, that is a naive argument and nobody in his right mind will agree to your fabrication of liers.

You said that Al Hillu started the war because of loosing the election to Ahmed Haroun an ICC indicted fugitive. That is not the case my dear, if it was then the day the results were announnced could have been the right day for protest and war right away. Instead he was level headed high because of his people’s suffering during the first war, he was not in a position to start a war. Therefore, the incumbent fugitive proclaim Governor was defeated by the level headedness of Al Hillu, so he planned this scenario with Nafie and the radicals in the NCP to get right of Al Hillu by any means it caused them. The tactics was that his(Al Hillu) forces will be disarmed by forced, if they refused then a fight will ensue and SAF will reinforce while Al Hillu will have no reinforcement from the South because Abyei which could have been the passage for reinforcement to Al Hillu is now under our hands. Then, there was no need to worry and an attack on Al Hillu forces was ordered.

You said that if SAF was to disarm all SPLA forces in the North by force why is it not doing it now in Blue Nile? The policies of divide and rule are still intact in the NCP corridors, NCP/SAF do not want several fronts, intelligence from credible sources say that NCP wants to finish first with South Kordofan before beginning the same campaign in Blue Nile.

The SAF is not ready to fight two fronts at the same time, they need to handle the situation in the Nuba Mountain separately and later come to handle Blue Nile situation separately to be able to win swiftly. You think that we don’t know your plan but we are already certain and aware about your plans before you Mohammed know them.

Also NCP/SAF has notice that the military situation in South Kordofan is not in their favor and they are luring Malik Agar to mediate in the fighting so Al Hillu can be persuaded to agree a cease fire.
