Sudan’s Bashir threatens a repeat of Abyei and S. Kordofan “lessons”

June 19, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese president Omer Hassan al-Bashir on Sunday accused the Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) of “betrayal” in South Kordofan which is currently witnessing heavy fighting between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the SPLA.

Sudan President Omar Hassan al-Bashir addresses supporters during a visit to Sinkat Town in Red Sea State June 19, 2011 (Reuters)
“The enemy there [South Kordofan] practiced treachery when all of them were eating from the same plate,” Bashir told his supporters in Sinkat locality in Eastern Sudan.

Bashir said he regretted the “late understanding” of SPLM leaders.

“We hope that now they understood….anyone who looks our way we will stab his eyes,” he warned.

The oil-rich state of Southern Kordofan, on the ill-defined border with the south, is among several flashpoints as Sudan’s south prepares to secede on July 9.

Fighting between SAF and SPLA in the state erupted on June 5th under mysterious circumstances. The Northern army said that the SPLA launched an attack on a police station and stole weapons prompting a response.

However, the SPLA claimed that SAF attempted to disarm their units by force. The North gave SPLA in the Blue Nile and South Kordofan until June 1st to evacuate the two states and head South of the 1956 borders.

But officials in the south’s dominant party said that fighters in these border regions are Northerners and therefore cannot be asked to migrate southwards.

Prior to that the SAF moved on May 21st to seize the contested region of Abyei in retaliation for an ambush on its forces near the area that was blamed on the SPLA.

In both cases thousands of civilians have been displaced creating a humanitarian crisis that has partially spilled into the soon to secede south. Furthermore, several reports have alleged that the conflict in South Kordofan has taken an ethnic dimension.

Khartoum has given conflicting signals over the game plan for Abyei with Bashir vowing never to withdraw and other officials saying that a pullout is contingent upon new security arrangements.

SAF said that it will continue its military campaign in South Kordofan, which included aerial bombardment, until it crushes the rebellion led by former deputy governor and leading SPLM figure Abdel-Aziz al-Hilu.

The Sudanese president today called for friendly ties between the North and South instead of war and displacement but stressed that the army is prepared to fight.

“If they want war…we will show them practically like what happened in Abyei and South Kordofan” Bashir said.

“It is better that they [SPLM] come to us in good terms and we will be better than them,” he added.

Some analysts have argued that the North is seeking through the recent military operations to strengthen its position at the negotiating table with the South particularly with regard to oil sharing and border demarcation.

The African Union panel headed by former South African president Thabo Mbeki is seeking to de-escalate the situation through North-South talks that are ongoing in the Ethiopian capital.

Mbeki announced this week that both sides agreed “in principle” to withdraw Sudanese troops from Abyei and deploy Ethiopian peacekeepers. However, the Northern side has reportedly attached stringent conditions to its approval.

On South Kordofan the former South African leader said that the warring parties have agreed to hold talks on cessation of hostilities but offered little details as fighting intensified around the state capital of Kadugli.

The nicest thing you can do for the country and its people is arrest Abdel-Aziz al-Hilu and bring him to court let him be given a sentence by the families of the civilians that were killed in South Kordofan in the recent violence

    Bashir;
How long will you be opening your mouth in mass assembly of intimidated citizens? Which SPLM do you mean to come and be in good terms with you? Can you not differentiate between SPLM North and South? If you are demanding SPLM South it will not happen. Keep on threatening and one day you will lick your own wound in the events.

Who is fighting with Bashir anyway? The response is clear that those fighting in Kordofan aren’t southerners though they are our brothers, so why are you continuing with provocations. Remember if southerners go to war this time you are the one to suffer because you are not used to hardships.

    Dear Southerners,

Bashir is a typical arab fundamentalist with shallow policies of revolutionary. I do beilieve it is the making of that thug called Hassan Turabi which brought this mess to Sudan. The time for us is on its way and it won’t be very difficult for us not to respond to such threats and intimidations whether from Khartoum or from any Country that will weigh war against us.
Bashir is silly and rubbish. We have been saying that nothing, absolutely nothing that is to be gained when we fight each other but now Bashir’s intentions are transparent.

SPLA is ready for any nonsense as from July the 9th.

Border issue started since signing of CPA, do you think it will work miracally within 3 week time toward independent for South Sudan?

You were preparing for this moment, that’s why you bought yourself in the last 3 years more than 10 mi-29 to counter SPLA through aerial bombardment not if they want, you are ready for war as you said it, then lets go for it murder some people and see who will the war.

Northerners are not more Sudanese than Southerners, British did not annexed South Sudan to the North. We used to have two Sudan under the British rules, South and North. It was when they left that they brought these two separated entities together, and that should not be refers to as annexation. The British thought that we will be better as a big country, instead the did put into consideration that some blacks called themselves Arabs when they are not.

Omar al Bashir and your NCP alikes.

Barking wouldn’t help you this time mr, killer. Since you came up to power by coup, putting Sadiq al Mahdi in jail who was about to give Southern Sudan presdency as a way of solving the big problems and the Idea for Sadiq al Mahdi was to shared power in Sudan, but you rejeceted foolishly thinking you will defeating rebels within one year unfortunately, you discover that, the SPLA were almost heading to Khartoum and not to mention Eastern Sudan.

In 2005, you agree public in the front of International body that, everythings will be end sincer and peacefully manner but now you realizing lately that, if it is peaceful solution then, you and your NCP are going to loss power to SPLM because the million innocents lives losts in Sudan show actual you are not a leader to lead Sudanese people but unhuman and killer. You foolishly again asserting to return people back to war Ideas which will be officially your end with your NCP. The Nubian land belong to the people of Nubian kingdom and none of God would never told Nubian people to moved away from their land, because they are entitle to live or dies in their motherland.

The Former president of Egyptian told you that, in order to have this problem finishing peaceful with Southern Sudanese and the rest of Sudanese then, you and your NCP must be opening minds to do something real good and ”said, I don’t want to tell you do this or that but you guys go and thinks wisely before the Sudan April general election and before Southern Sudan referendum to take place. SPLM came and nominate Yasri Arman according to the advice they received from the Former president of Egyptian but you and your guilty Party NCP were threaten to murder the SPLM national canadidate and even your security were trying very hard to blocking Darfurian who were about to go and listen to SPLM’S Canadidate Mr. Yasir Arman’s speeches. I don’t think you will win the war you seem to resorting again.

Dogs when they afraid for something, they always barking every where and facing whatever, the direction they saw and they never even knowing that, their shouting has a strong signal to either Lion and this is how you and your Khartoum government have been desperately barking on Southern Sudanese, barking on the South Kordofan of Nubia Mountains, barking on unrest Darfur regions and said, also to do same thing in South Blue Nile how panic are you now.? I consider that, the end of Omar al Bashir is coming to conclude shortly.

There will be no war, because no sane one needs war. It solves no problems. It escalates disasters and shatters hopes.

Remember! Both NCP and SPLM/A are using public speeches to make exactly the same statements for local consumption. GoSS leaders also vomitted such statements during the last weeks.

Both North and South must and will live in peace. SPLM and NCP are not immortal. Both are insane politicians. Both will vanish and a new set of leadership will emerge to work for the benefits and mutual interests. We just need to tap off the international interventions.

Normal citizens in North and South proved many times over that they can coexist and live together in peace. We’re destined and geographically determined to be together.

Let Bashir and other NCP leaders work for peace, tolerance, cooperation and common interest. Let SPLM leaders be wise and build a new nation based on democracy, justice, human rights, equity and good governance.

Without the above from both sides, there will be no peace or development – no life.

Let the racial and tribal lizards hide in their holes. Please keep quite and don’t set fire. Most comments are unfortunately negative and nonconstructive.

    Mohamed Ali,

Southerners know what it means to negotiate and keep the agreement, but northerners in general and President al Bashir don’t know how to keep agreements. What had taken place in Abyei case and southern Kordofan is a clear violation of Comprehensive peace Agreement of 2005. further, al Bashir is still pouring out nonsense of stabbing the eyes of whoever will confront them, while he is the one who have started. When the SAF occupied Abyei region he assumed that SAF is
more stronger to take over southern Kordofan which is untrue. President al Bashir should show his words by actions, not just talking, if he really means to pursue peace in southern Kordofan and Abyei let him withdraw his army, and let the JIU take over as it has been agreed upon in the CPA. Know that in the modern time nothing can be solve through military means. I gree with analysts that GoS want to pressure the SPLM in negotiations on the post-secession issues.

The SPLA attacked the SAF more than two times. GOSS apologized for this action.

South Kordufan Al Hilo lost the elections and just after few days started the war. In the begining Haroun was mislead and was saying these are only isolated incidences, protecting his deputy in a good face. Unfortunately Hilu had got his own plans.

Unfortunately the SPLA is not under one leadership at the moment. Both wars were not approved by the SPLA leadership.

Why is it taking long for Al-Bashir to smoke out Southern Kordofan based SPLA as the NCP promised some weeks ago? Al-Bashir with his army commanders declared war against SPLA weeks ago and it seems they are struggling to achieve their intention. They gave deadline as on 1st June 2011 for the SPLA in South Blue Nile and South Kordofan to withdraw to 1956 borders. President Salva Kiir did not say anything. He did not declare it. What will happen if he declares it. Just let’s relax and be be calm. Time will tell! Let’s prepare to celebrate our independence. Of course we have put prices to achieve it.

    Mohamed Ali,

I don’t think al Hilu started the war in south Kordofan, he has lost election, but not naive to endanger the lives of his people. the irritation started when SAF warn the SPLA soldiers in both southern Kordofan and Blue Nile to move south the border of 1956 as if they were from south Sudan. further, SAF moved their artillery and occupied the Kadugli airport which is a signal of their attempt to implement their warning. the dangerous thing in the world of military army is to issue threatening words, and if you point your gun at any person even without firing you are considered murderer according to military law. So, this warning, and moving in of artillery have alert the SPLA in the area that SAF warn to attack them, so please be honest and don’t blame it on al Hilu, he doesn’t need to be a escape-goat. Honesty is one of the ways to reach agreement in every conflict resolution, but if everyone insist that he/she is right there will not be a way out.

I disagree with you in your allegation that SPLA is not under unified leadership. imagine the large number of arm individual without unified leadership, they can spread violent and damage in the region. There is a leadership in the SPLA as an army. This doesn’t mean that there are some small attempts from fable minded of former SPLA generals who are now politicians, but there is a way to separate politics from the army. The national army should not be used by a party to secure their agenda.

    5. SPLA must be equipped to crash SAF regime and teach them lessons that will deter them from intimidation and provocative act of genocide.

South must defend its citizens and borrow money from USA to build SPLA capacity to protect it people.SAF is committing further genocide in Kordofa/ Abyei with impunity.

It is not a matter of thinking, it was written on this web that the SPLA suddenly started shooting, moreover he has the motive, the loss of elections!

Why is the claim that disarment was the cause didn’t happen in Blue Nile.It should be the same! The SPLA was not attacked , it attacked in places where it was not supposed according to the CPA. It attacked inside Kadugli the capital of South Kordufan.

Am sorry Madut what is happening in the south is promoted and supported by the SPLA and politicians. Why should these tribes kill each other so massively. Are they just fond of killing? No they are not.SPLA soldiers sides with their tribe whenever there is a fight. All politicians have their convoyes and guard from their tribe only AND not from the SPLA .Massive killing is taking place now in the south and only the poor and needy is dying for no good reason at all, except the greed of the politicians!

Abeyei , the SAF was attacked without the approval of the GOSS. South Kordufan was not supported by the SPLA command except for Abeyei sons. A demonistration for their support in Juba was not allowed by Salva! So, they are acting more or less alone, unfortunately it is still the responsibilty of the SPLA.

    Mohamed

I think you see things on one side. remember how many times SAF attacked the south from the air without the south retaliated. for example SAF bombarded Northern Bahr el-Gazale just before registration began, and the SPLA has never response to that bombardment. They have attacked many border areas, even sometimes using the misiryia tribe but the south has not retaliated. Is it that SAF is more stronger than the SPLA, I don’t think so, it is because those you term as divided politician pledged to implement the CPA between the north and the south which is the focus at the moment, but the northern army and politician are trying their best to divorce it. The attacked on the SAF (JIU) in May 19th, is not a justification of attacking and displacing the citizens of the region this is not acceptable. this was a planned attack on Abyei to secure the way, than fight other former SPLA in other areas, southern Kordofan was the first, follows by Blue Nile. And as you know this totally fail, because war is not by artillery and numbers it is by passion to the cause, so war will not eliminate the opposition in those areas, it is better to follow the CPA and provide security agreed on by the people, whether disarmament or integration which is not my concern.

Even today, it has been announce again that the north and the southern negotiators have reached an agreement that SAF will be withdran from Abyei and replace with peace keepers from Ethiopia, but southerners doubt that agreement because of distrust. Mohamed I lived in Khartoum for long and still have friends there from the north, but I have never experienced dishonoring the agreements like what is going on now.

There are some killings in the south, some are not done by southerners (e.g. LRA) in western Equatoria, but the rest are cause by some tribes who tries to still cattle, the same thing which was practice by misiryia since 1982, one year before war broke out. This can be managed by the authorities in the south.

Khartoum92, Dear, Khartoum! We as South, Sudanese people,as a new nation with new style,we know now, how much you are so desperate in the north. Bashiir was stuppidly trying to take short cut in order to down play his black video game. He was thinking that, he could reach Juba with in two days, like what he did in Abyei, he missed the game!. He didn’t even made it to Pan-rieng in those two days. We all know South, Sudan left only with few weeks for her independent, in order for us to retaliate the air strikes that we just witnessed in the state of Unity State’s Ruweng County in the area of Jaw Payam b/n South-North border. We must retaliate so badly, so that we both, the citizens of the two states share the pains.

Come to the point, our comrade in the libration, CDR. Abdel Aziz al-Hilu, the man is not even close or related to the words you trying to mention in your topic, I think you Mahamed Haarun, because he is the criminal we all know, he is indeed waiting behind the door of ICC or SPLM/A if ICC fail to make on time, then we will arrest him no doubt. It’s true! Am not making it up. You folks, must starts believing Dr. Garang’s words, saying that Sudan will never be the same again, we will chops this country down in small tiny pieces like stew meat, untill whom ever get tire of that life, therefore seek the refuges. If Bashiir, want peace, he must sign a counceling paper, telling us, that he understood the consequences and will not make any further attempts.
Otherwise, Khartoum will be like Sodum.
The%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%of peace is 5% and the war went up%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%95% Bashiir is dying for the Oil$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$Bashiir dye hard!

I agree Mahammed! You don’t rely on someone inorder to be strong,I personally didn’t agree with Dinkado! That’s a very weak point. We, in the SPLA had captured around, 4,000 troops from regime in Khartoum during war time southern sudan with out even many that of D-30s or tanks shooter gun, now have more than 1,000,000,000 lazers gun or air depense, that could deal with Bashiir’s mig-jet fihgt in less then 12hrs, we don’t even need any out sider. We, in the SPLA don’t need any intamidation from the out siders forces, like northern sudan bringing in all the arabs from very many arabs country, We captured more than 2000 troops from Iraq around Juba in 1992. were tanks operators. Northern Sudan army is a very weak army, we don’t need to try that very hard.

I think what need to be understand by both Sudan Government and UNMIS is that SPLA known as Sudan People Liberation Army objection want to liberate the whole country of Sudan since it was formed by John Garang and never change its objection. By definition and how SPLA was formed out from South Sudan Independant Movement (SSIM)where this SSIM objection was seperation of South from North Sudan by mean of transitional which later turn into revolution taken by the new formed Sudan People Liberation Army against South Sudan Independant Movement,I believe, Splitting the country into North-South is not the solution, it only help the SPLA soldiers to control that part of country and again move forward to finish controling the country part by part. Since they got the US Government support either way of doing right or wrong, this is how SPLA Soldiers are acting like crazy. I don’t see the International right to involve into country politic by supporting SPLA Rebels to make their revolution. There suppose for them to have limit or specify what they want to respect the North, East, and West People of Sudan rights. I wish for better understanding!

    To Matung

Please stop taking us back to square one. the group who form SSIM WHICH WAS THE OLD ANYANYAONE Party didnot do anything good to Southerners they betrayed our people by handing over the Town that were captured by SPLA to NCP or SAF and they started killing civilian. If they were fighting for SouthSudan Separation they would have take control of those Town,so that we believe what they were fighting for. I was RADIO OPerator back in SPLA and i know a lot more then you know.
