South Kordofan fighting rumbles on amid mutual claims of victory

Meanwhile, the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) in North Sudan has vowed to continue battling the SPLM in South Kordofan until its forces fall back to their previous positions.

South Kordofan battles erupted on 6 June as the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) of north Sudan moved to disarm armed groups aligned with the SPLM, which rules South Sudan but maintains an opposition party in the north. Over 60,000 have fled the fighting which escalated into artillery and aerial bombardment, according to UN figures.

There have also been reports of widespread atrocities committed by SAF and its allied militias against the civilian population, including summary executions, abduction, arbitrary arrest and torture.

Sudan Tribune has learned that fierce battles took place on Saturday on the outskirts of Kadugli town. Government sources told Sudan Tribune that SAF had seized an important military base of the SPLM’s leader AL-Hilu after fierce clashes which left a number of causalities on both sides.

The sources claimed that the seizure of the base was a “great victory” for the army considering that it was one of the “strategic locations from which Al-Hilu managed his military operations.

Meanwhile, the commander of intelligence in SAF’s infantry battalion 14, Hasan Ali, said that three vehicles laden with artillery, arms and ammunition had been seized in Al-Hamrah area east of Kadugli. In a press statement on Sunday, He accused the SPLM of plotting to kill and displace civilians.

SPLM’s leader in South Kordofan Abdul Aziz Adam Al-Hilu on Saturday claimed his forces were in control of large parts of South Kordofan. “We want to confirm to you that fighting is still ongoing within the city of Kadugli and that the SPLA is still in control of important locations within the city,” the SPLM’s figure said in a press statement.

“We confirm to you that a number of localities are entirely under the control of the SPLA by 100% which are the localities (Dallami, Haiban, Alburam, Um Dorain) in addition to more than 60 other garrisons scattered along the state had been liberated completely from the grip of the army of the National Congress Party,” he added.

Meanwhile, the NCP’s secretary of political affairs Qutbi Al-Mahdi declared that the army would continue its battles against the SPLM in South Kordofan, saying that his party rejects any ceasefire or initiation of negotiation before the SPLA moves back to the position it held before the outbreak of the violence on 6 June.

He told reporters in Khartoum on Sunday that the fighting would not stop until the CPA implementation is complete and the popular consultation in South Kordofan is organized.

Qutbi accused the SPLM of violating the CPA and held “imprudent” Al-Hilu responsible for the current turmoil, saying that he refuses to negotiate on any basis and has dragged citizens to the throes of war

Arrest who? Harun or Al-Bashir? I believe both them are wanted by the ICC for the death of every single civilian in Darfur for some years and South Kordofan eventually.

My friend let us be realistic, propaganda will not help solve our issues in Sudan either North or South. You are saying that it was Abdalaziz Adam Al Hilu forces (SPLM/A)northern sector that started the war but all indicators proven that it was SAF which started the war, first the SAF gave an ultimatum that they don’t need any SPLA either in Blue Nile or in Southern kordofan by the 1st of June 2011.
Mohammed is that not a declaration of war as per say, where do you think these armed guys will move to while they are the sons and daughters of that land? They were born in Southern Kordofan and you want them to move away from their motherland, that is a naive argument and nobody in his right mind will agree to your fabrication of liers.

You said that Al Hillu started the war because of loosing the election to Ahmed Haroun an ICC indicted fugitive. That is not the case my dear, if it was then the day the results were announnced could have been the right day for protest and war right away. Instead he was level headed high because of his people’s suffering during the first war, he was not in a position to start a war. Therefore, the incumbent fugitive proclaim Governor was defeated by the level headedness of Al Hillu, so he planned this scenario with Nafie and the radicals in the NCP to get right of Al Hillu by any means it caused them. The tactics was that his(Al Hillu) forces will be disarmed by forced, if they refused then a fight will ensue and SAF will reinforce while Al Hillu will have no reinforcement from the South because Abyei which could have been the passage for reinforcement to Al Hillu is now under our hands. Then, there was no need to worry and an attack on Al Hillu forces was ordered.

You said that if SAF was to disarm all SPLA forces in the North by force why is it not doing it now in Blue Nile? The policies of divide and rule are still intact in the NCP corridors, NCP/SAF do not want several fronts, intelligence from credible sources say that NCP wants to finish first with South Kordofan before beginning the same campaign in Blue Nile.

The SAF is not ready to fight two fronts at the same time, they need to handle the situation in the Nuba Mountain separately and later come to handle Blue Nile situation separately to be able to win swiftly. You think that we don’t know your plan but we are already certain and aware about your plans before you know them.

Also NCP/SAF has notice that the military situation in South Kordofan is not in their favor and they are luring Malik Agar to mediate in the fighting so Al Hillu can be persuaded to agree a cease fire. Whether you like it or not Southern Kordofan is not going to be the same again, you have to change or the change will change you radicals.

Here it is clear that the NCP has an ideal goal to achieve in this period and they want to put the attention of SPLM/A far away so that by the time SPLM/A will wake up NCP could have got what they want, its not this fighting in these placese not even the bloodshed is a matter to NCP,
The NCP also wants to implicate some people who will accompany Bashir and the 2 others to ICC but that is a failed plan because there is no way they can try to put blams on the Al Hilu for the fighting because Al Hilu is a local of that place hence trying to force him out must result to a self defence punches.
Khartoum 2 or 12 or zero, for you what you cheris is what Bashir or NCP is but follow me here,Iam a Southerner but I don’t support what SPLA/M may do against humanity or even the failure to settle issues to bring peace so what do you look at when you analyze situation of this kind? Do you first think of you mother, wife and children who are supposed to be in school? O come on men!Forget about what NCP OR SPLA/M is focus on what the consequances will be on the both sides.
