SPLM rejects Bashir’s threats over disputed issues

By Ngor Arol Garang

June 24, 2011 (JUBA) – South Sudan’s ruling party – the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) – on Friday rejected what it described as political and military threats by the Khartoum government to gain concessions over issues such as the contested oil-producing region of Abyei.

The SPLM and their Northern counterparts the National Congress Party are undergoing talks in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa to determine a number of arrangements for after South Sudan secedes on 9 July.

However Sudan’s President Omer Hassan Al-Bashir who is expected to visit China next week China’s told Xinhua news agency, Thursday that war with the South Sudan remains possible due to the unresolved disputes between the two parties as the South is going to be independent state within two weeks.

Daniel Awet Akot, Deputy Speaker of the Juba-based regional assembly told Sudan Tribune that the SPLM would not return to war.

“This position remains the same. It has not changed not because we will lose anything, but because this is the position of the people of south Sudan. Our people need peace”, Akot emphasised.

The senior member of the powerful 27-member political bureau of the SPLM said the government of South Sudan were committed to peaceful dialogue as a means of settling some of the remaining outstanding issues in the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement and post-independence arrangements.

“SPLM is committed to peaceful dialogue with National Congress Party as our partner. This is what we expect from our partners as well. We should negotiate as partners so that we are able to understanding on issues being discussed. There is no need for giving conditions and threats when talks are in progress to put more pressure on discussions”, he said, stressing that his party will not accept threats to concede on anything.

“The SPLM and the people of South Sudan will not accept threats for concessions. We do not make concessions for threats. We make concessions when we see clear and genuine reasons for concessions”, said Akot who has held a number of high level positions in the former rebel movement after joining it in 1984.

Bashir said that the South will be the loser is they attempt to create troubles with the North.

“We, on our part, are committed to and keen on peace. However, if the links of our brothers in Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) push them to create problems, they will lose. They have experienced that in Abyei and in South Kordofan,” Al-Bashir said in an interview with Xinhua published on Friday.

Akot, said the SPLM was open to international mediation with the NCP on issues the two parties have repeatedly failed to reach an understanding.

“We are opened for international mediations on issues we cannot resolve with National Congress Party provided that mediators give equal attentions and remain neutral during discussions so that results of the negotiations are not contested lest they are reached”, he said.

The relations between north and south Sudan have recently been witnessing mounting tensions in the wake of their dispute over the Abyei area which the Northern Sudanese troops seized on 21 May.

    I will kill Mr Beshir if he happen to set his feet on the South during the independence day. This man is bulling us too much and all these are the results of our weak,greedy, unprofessional, unethical and corrupt leaders in GOSS whose primary objectives are to still public and development funds and offer lease services to the people of South Sudan that they have been hoping for in over fifty years of struggle.

    We really looked weak in the eyes of our enemies because of the disunity among ourselves.

    Al Bashir should not divert attention from the real problems North Sudan will face once South Sudan declares independence. His entire rule has been characterized by war and war-mongering, which is nothing new. He should give the Sudanese a break from this nonsense. Clearly, since Al B ashir has no children of his own, be he does not feel the pain of losing young Sudanese on both sides of the North-South divide. The departure of the South is an indictment of the racist policies pursued by Al Bashir and his predecessors. The earlier Bashir and the like-minded in northern Sudan comes to terms with this reality, the better for them. He has failed to destabilize the South through sponsoring militias (including the notorious Joseph Kony) and now he is singing songs of another war with the South? Even threats of economic blockade will not dent South Sudan’s resolve to match forward in peace and dignity. Al Bashir should understand that after July 9, 2011, if he dares, he will be declaring war on a Sovereign South Sudan, and there will be consequences.

    I do not blame north or Bashir for all the threats and provocations towArds us. These people know southern government allowed it’s officials to loot the money that should have been used forour security, leave alone developments

    If North were to have knowledge that south Sudan armed themselves properly, they would not attempt to provoke us knowing that they would be hit hard. North knows south well when it comes for real fighting but the fact that they know south needs time to get well equipped is the reason they are doing that. The second reason is they know we are not going to fight them befor July the 9th.

    You are very right my bro. If you at our army, the SPLA there is no much effort done in these six years to equip them ,modernize them and improve their living standard well, they looked much the same like the SPLA that we left ten years ago.

    The money for are been consumed by those illiterate Generals whose houses are full of any model of the latest cars, that why our enemies are bulling us because they know that our poorly equip army the SPLA of today is not strong enough to protect us. We will always live under the clouds of threats from our enemies and beg them for peace and negotiations and as our Generals continue to loot the security funds.

    Dear all;
    Now for how long will the SPLM be in this position that “there is return to War”? Let us not devote our believes to this statement and if the SPLM think that it is going to gain more advanatge in this position, they would not allow international community who dearly need Mr. Bashir for his ten crimes he has committed with his officials. SPLM should not take the issue of the South Sudan upon itself has it is the case in Abyei. It is a great mistake for the SPLM to continue repeating their positions as an answer to continue threat of Bashir and his officials. I do not know who is a next advisor for the SPLM to take this kind of soft shield?

    One of the outstanding issues that is Border Demarcation is the only pressing item to be discuss with the NCP but Oil sharing is not because it is the Southern Oil and there is no for the NCP or North to demand share from it. If it is a matter of blocking the Pipe line than let it be block. After Declaration South and North should build a seperator wall along the border and we shall see to it who is going to lose.
    SPLM/A and its people lost money for many years and yet they survived. Why not we lose for a short time and than we become stronger later than now? We need to have temporal new refinery within and we shall transport it by land.

    It is just a matter of commitment to it. There is nothing impossible in this world.

    @Cibaipiath Junub Sudan

    If SPLM is too old,weak and tired to fight then let them give way to young patriots of South Sudan to lead the army forces in the face of those threats from the NCP.

    SPLM has become just like a fearful dog that can’t bite and only pulls it long tail between its legs all the way to its chest when others are trying to bite it.

    How long shall SPLM keep on singing for us NO RETURN TO WAR,NO RETURN TO WAR… when the NCP are giving us hard slaps on our faces?
