June 26, 2011 (JUBA) – The southern Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) on Sunday accused the northern Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) of backing deadly clashes in southern state of Warrap.
The attack comes ahead of the deployment of Ethiopian Forces mandated by the United Nations to the disputed border town of Abyei, which the northern army took from a local administration predominantly controlled by officials loyal to the South Sudan’s ruling party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement.
In May SAF the oil-producing region following clashes in which the Joint Integrated Unit component of the SPLA were accused of ambushing the SAF withdrawing from the area in response to recommendation by security committee tasked to oversee withdrawal of the unauthorised forces from Abyei in accordance with the Kadugli Agreement.
Colonel Phillip Aguer Panyang, SPLA spokesman accused the SAF of using the militia to stir up violence in the contested borderlines in order to provoke return to war before independence of South Sudan.
“The Sudan Armed Forces are using militia groups to attack areas along the borderlines in order to provoke reaction from the Sudan People’s Liberation Army. This is the ploy coined by the government in Khartoum”, said Colonel Panyang.
“Our people in the South together with their government under the leadership of our president comrade General Salva Kiir Mayardit, know these facts”, adds the senior military officer. Panyang further said he has no clear details of the casualties.
“We have not received clear details of the clashes,” he said. He added that their plahas failed.
“Our forces in Turalei crushed them properly”, he said explaining that was part of a plan by the North to take over oil-rich areas in the South before it gains independence next month.
“They want to draw border by force between the North and South because the border has not been physically demarcated. This is plan the government in Khartoum is pursuing. They want to demarcate borders by the use of the army. They are using force to demarcate borders”, explains Panyang. He said the SPLA would not accept any provocation to resume war.
Ariec Mayar Ariec, a member of Warrap State Legislative in Kuajok, capital of the State, confirmed the attack to have taken place on Friday and said that 11 people including women were killed. He said some of the attackers have disappeared into the community after scattering during the fighting and reportedly throwing away their guns.
“Some people on the side of our Gelweng (home guards) have been killed. They have killed three policemen and more than eight fighters on the side of the attackers. Eleven lives in total have been lost”, he said explaining that some of the fighters have disappeared into community and that they were still being hunted”.
Colonel Dominic Deng Kuoc Malek, Twic County Commissioner, in a separate interview with Sudan Tribune confirmed the attack took place.
Turalei hosts tens of thousands of people who had been displaced from their homes in the contested North-South region of Abyei following an invasion by SAF.
The senior member of the South Sudan’s ruling party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement said the attack was carried out by armed groups allegedly allied to Gen. Peter Gadet, who defected from the SPLA. He claimed Gadet is on the payroll of the Khartoum government.
“The attack was actually targeting Turalei. And their intention was to overrun the area so that they that make as base for further attacks on other areas. All of the offensives are actually targeting the coming separation on the 9 July,” Deng said.
North and South Sudan ended more than two decades of civil war, in which more than 2 million people died, in 2005 with a peace deal that promised both Abyei and the South self-determination votes.
The south voted overwhelmingly in January to secede and will become an independent nation July 9. Abyei’s vote never happened, so its future is being negotiated by the North and South.

Peter Gatdate Yaka has three problems when he had returned to his safe haven Khartoum government. One he has been married many wives as more than 60 and those 70 women are needing services as they were deceiving by one man. Two he did not like Paulino Matip Nhial in that position although Paulino Matip was unaware that was another problem which the information is telling us so far. Three he thought and was been told by those Idiocy to make a coup thinking that will make him a powerful man but he never know that, couping in the situation that, people are known or living a tribal society could back fire to those who were thinking to overthrow.
I belief he will come back just like many others Southerners Sudanese who did more than four times going to Khartoum government for help and later returned to South and the good example, can starting from him when he was been moving between SPLA and Khartoum government. He did a lots of damage to Khartoum government when he was thinking to come back to SPLA and I am sure he will do same to Khartoum government later when thought about joining to Southern Sudan. he is a movable guy on the other hand, he is a fearful man. He is just misusing the innocent Nuer people to dies for his own business and I wish the Nuer society should tell other Nuer to stay away from him.

Complain, after complains will never solve the killing that is happening in south Sudan. Since GoSS knows that SAF is this, what is the GoSS strategy to end the killing?
If it is because of money being paid to the militias, why can’t GoSS develop the same strategy and pay money to these militia leaders to bring them back and from there develop any other strategy after getting them back.
Complaining, complain shows incompetence. You can complain of unknown but once known find solution to cure the problem.
Just like a good medical doctor who will be sad if the diagnoses does not show specific disease, but once disease is found then it becomes easy to prescribe medicine.
GoSS should look for medicine to cure these issue of militias and other unnecessary killings since the diagnoses has shown that SAF is behind them. No need just to complain as if you are not a government with strategies.

Well! Whether the attackers are allegedly backed by Khartoum or not, it is a big failure to SPLA, and all other uniform forces. It is merely a blunt failure to secure the people and the land. If it is well-documented that the attackers are under Khartoum payroll, then why on earth SPLA is just passively waiting to be smashed? Are unrest and insecurity only take place in the bordering states with the North? Is Juba safe? Is it safe anywhere in the South?
SPLA is to be blamed because of many reasons. SPLA is a militia – not an institutionalized (national) army. Please note that I put “national” between brackets. Our solider are not well trained, equipped or paid. The old mentality of the bush is still prevailing. The line of command is not well established due to ignorance and (some) political mess. The insecurity is also to be blamed to the tribal and geographical sub-militias of SPLA. The GoSS is so weak and divided thanks to SPLM political genius. For six years and over 11 Billion USD we gained no peace or development. No promising political horizon or respect for human rights. No equality – but nepotism and the nasty tribalism.
How SPLA leaders cry and blame their failure to the north? The North according to most SPLM/SPLA leaders, is the only enemy of the South, and they behave accordingly by supporting Darfur rebels openly with the command, coordination and support of the international intelligence. You must expect the same from your enemy isn’t it? If SPLM/A is trying all its efforts in destabilizing the North, then why crying. Steadfast to your attitudes and set the war you love.
However, according to my knowledge and to what is been circulated by diplomatic sources no war can be set at all. It is just that the SPLA leaders are trying to attribute their failure,incompetence and lack of professionalism to the North. It is not true. Believe me we have enough problems that make the North just wait and see how we’re going to be a failed state and how we massacre ourselves. We have all the seeds of failure and catastrophe.
GoSS needs to reconsider everything in the South and get everyone involved or it is our doomsday – not the long-lasting hope and ambition. The day-to day realities in every part of the motherland are precursors.

Peter Gatdat is not fit to be called a militia but a mercenary.
He is being paid to organize his illiterate support base to be used as mercenaries against Dinka population in border areas to advance North Sudan interest of pushing deep into South Sudan territory to forcefully annex oil fields to North Sudan.
It was Riek Machar who taught Peter Gatdat Yak to be a mercenary force mobilizer and commander as a mean of survival. When the war against Jallaba became tough in 1991 and Dinka Bor, the main SPLA/M logistics base for greater Upper Nile, Eastern and Central Equatoria operations was getting depleted, and food ration and meat were decreasing drastically, 98% or more of Nuer SPLA officers and soldiers rebelled against SPLA/M to form a mercenary force which they could use to loot for food at will.
Shortly after its formation, SPLA/M Nasir looting and mercenary force was paid with food rations by Jallaba to destroy Dinka Bor to deny SPLA/M frontlines logistics base and to demoralize freedom fighters around Juba, Reckon and Terekaka areas. During the split of SPLA/M which was mainly as a result of dwindling food supply and SPLA/M policy of not allowing looting of civilians resources in the areas of operation, 98% or more of Nuer soldiers and officers left SPLA/M to form SPLA/M Nasir faction as a looting and mercenary machinery for Nuer community, leaving the war against Jallaba to true liberators (Dinka). Riek Machar’s Nasir looting and mercenary machinery was immediately hired with food rations to destroy and loot everything in Dinka Bor area in order to deny SPLA/M frontlines supplies. Riek Machar implemented that mission and all Nuer communities from that time onwards want to form their own independent looting and mercenary machinery as Riek Machar did in 1991.
What a great shame Riek Machar had brought to Nuer community by teaching them looting and mercenary behaviors that are now being handed down to the next generation of Nuer traitors.
