June 28, 2011 (JUBA) – The renegade former deputy chief of general staff in
South Sudan army, General George Athor Deng, is organizing his forces to launch
massive attack inside the South before the region’s declaration of
independence on July 9, the army stated.
televised message on SSTV on Monday announced the intention of the militia
leader, Athor, allied to the Khartoum government to destabilize the region.
Aguer said the army has reliable information that forces loyal to George Athor
are being assembled and organized in the North Sudan’s Senar state which borders
the Upper Nile state of South Sudan to launch attacks targeting the disputed
areas between North and South Sudan as the region prepares to formally become
independent in less than two weeks time.
The army spokesman accused the Khartoum government of supporting and arming the
rebels and unleashing them to disrupt the process of smooth road to independence
of the region.
Aguer further explained that forces allied to another rebel leader Major General
Peter Gatdet Yak are responsible for this week’s attack in Warrap state’s Twic
County which left dozens of people dead and many others wounded.
Officials in South Sudan suspect forces loyal to the former advisor to President
Salva Kiir, Abdel Bagi Ayii, for the attacks in Warrap state. Ayii, who
reportedly recruits his supporters from Warrap state and Northern Bahr el
Ghazal, from where he hails, is also allied to Peter Gatdet, who recruits most
of his supporters from Unity state.
Warrap state officials said the attack in the state was quelled but the
attackers managed to hide among the local population of the community in the
victimized county.
They further explained that the attackers who wanted to establish their base in
Turalei, Twic County, also targeted tens of thousands of displaced persons from
Abyei who were based in the area.
Aguer further accused the Khartoum government of targeting the disputed oilfields including Higlig in Unity state’s Pariang County, which lies at the North-South border.
George Athor, who recruits most of his supporters from his home state of
Jonglei, was the first high ranking officer in South Sudan army to rebel against
the government since its formation in 2005 following the signing of the
Comprehensive Peace Agreement that ended 21 years of war between North and South
Sudan.
He rebelled in May 2010, citing elections rigging in Jonglei state, after
independently losing to his rival, Kuol Manyang Juuk, the current state governor
who was backed by the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).
The army spokesperson assured the South Sudan population that the region’s army is
ready to expel any attacks from all the Khartoum-backed militias in the region.

Abdal al-Abagi Ayii is a coward who will never do good to south Sudan, his history in the long struggle of south Sudan is very dirty and I don’t think any one could side with him. In the first struggle he sided with the northerners against his own people in Madhol killing many of them, while his chief Malong Yor rebelled and joined Anya nya1. When the war broke out again in the south, Ajuongdit his people again joined the movement (1984) and the events of Anya nya1 was still vital in their minds and hearts, so they burn down their own town Madhol, so that Ayii will not kill their innocent people again. So, Ayii tried to form militia in his area, but failed and went to Khartoum in 8os. He will never recruit anyone in northern Bahr al-Ghazale or Warrap States so forget about him, that will be a problem of these two states with him. These kinds of people don’t deserve to be in the government, they are illiterates and shortsighted.
Athor himself is another story, he thinks that he will change the system in the south, but that is a dream in his mind. He should know that many before him went against the south and they are not here with us, they were killed by their accomplices not even the SPLA. Everyone who try to destablize the south will find southerners ready to defend themselves, families, and resources.
I believe that development in its all aspects will be achieve only if we put down the arms and work together to develop the area. also democratic transformation has never been through military means. tell me a rebel who brought democracy in the whole world, they are all dictators. We have to thank the SPLM/A who tries their best to make this possible in south Sudan. So, let’s work together in our different parties for the welfare of the South.

No one knows these groups affiliations and intentions on people of South Sudan safety and reputation.
It will be a security nightmare for our ill trained security and anti-terrorism units to ensure smooth operation in the city during the independence day if heavy weight politicians such Barrack Obama, David Cameron, Nicholas Sarkozy, and Angela Markel are to attend.
Just get regional leaders and foreign affairs ministers from western countries to attend South Sudan Independence Day. Attendance by the whole world does not make South Sudan more or less independence state or guarantee South Sudan more direct foreign investments or grants.
Instead it will bring security arrangement nightmare for South Sudan young security institutions. South Sudan should not take chances in the face of many enemies of South Sudan by giving security forces tasks that are beyond their expertise at the movement.
