AU peace plan to gather Libyan Govt, rebel representatives in Ethiopia

By Tesfa-Alem Tekle

July 3, 2011 (ADDIS ABABA) – The embattled Libyan government and opposition representatives will soon meet in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, for talks as part of African Union efforts to reach a ceasefire and political solution to the crisis in Libya, where conflict has entered a fourth month.

The meeting was disclosed at an African Union summit held in Malabo, capital of Equatorial Guinea.

However the talks in Addis Ababa will be held without the presence of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, who is facing an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) along with his son Saif al-Islam Gaddafi and intelligence chief Abdullah Al-Senussi.

The AU summit in Malabo urged member nations not to cooperate with the ICC issued arrest warrant saying it undermines and seriously complicates the ongoing peace efforts by the African Union to the Libyan crisis.

The decision taken by the 53-member pan African body – to disregard the ICC arrest warrant – was highly welcomed by Libyan officials.

“The ICC is a European Guantanamo Bay. It’s only against the African leaders. It never deals with the crimes committed by the United States of America and by the European powers everywhere in the world”, Libyan government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim told the press.

Since March NATO has been launching air strikes as part of a UN mandate to protect civilians. However NATO is being accused of exceeding this and has been accused by Tripoli of killing civilians including children.

Now France is also under-fire with broad accusations of arming Libyan rebels by dropping weapons off planes – in violation of the UN resolution.

Addressing to thousands of his supporters gathered at the main Green Square in the capital Tripoli, Libyan Leader, Gaddafi on Friday threatened to carry out attacks in Europe if NATO does not stop its airstrikes.

Rebels took up arms against Gaddafi’s four months ago following uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt and against authoritarian regimes.

This is something that i have been waiting to hear from the AU. Let them speed up and disappoint the so-called NATO that is very much interested in exercising its military capacity on weak countries. MAUMAU

    Maumau,

I’m not actually fan of Gaddafi but when the west increase it interest in Libya just because of 120 people that have died, i became to love Gaddafi hating the west more than i hate myself.

The west, NATO and the rebels are the loser finally, whenever they saw Gaddafi doing something they fell jealousy and started to issued some stupidity whatever they international criminal court which is lie from the western countries who sell their guns to be uses against innocent people but at the end after they found that deal is working for whatever they were thinking than then issued arrest warrant their old partner that is exactly what happening in Libya.

The NATO and it allies are complaining about the cost of their operation which they came to realized that the rebels can’t succeed in the near future so they turn to the AU which they didn’t respected when the AU members went to Libya.

Therefore, I wish Mr. Gaddafi will refused to their demand and let us continues seeing what will happen next.
I am here in Russia, the Russia government is very upset about what is going in Libya right now, if you can notice from the reaction of the man who tried punched the French president on his teeth like the one of the Italian prime minister, but he was so lucky. apart form that the IMF former chief is now freed which the biggest role in the next election in French and the man is against the war in Libya which made the American are worry about the future of their relationship with French after all they done to the man.

I am equally not a fun of Gadaffi because of his over-staying in power but we have to know that he did a lot for Libya and some African countries. Look at Libya, completely desert but Gadaffi has managed to properly use the oil money to build fantastic infrastructure, education, health and most importantly, secured enough food for the country for all these years. Libyans never beg for relief aid or external support, Gadaffi gives them and he never begs the west for anything. This is one of the reasons why they jumped very fast in the fight they were not supposed to. Generally, they are jealous of Gadaffi. Thanks to AU for being wise to use dialogue to solve the Libyan problems. MAUMAU
