W. Equatoria ECS bishop calls for respect for human life in South Sudan

July 11, 2011 (YAMBIO) – The bishop of the Episcopal Church of the Sudan (ECS) All Saints Cathedral, Yambio, Rev. Peter Munde Yacoub has called upon the people of the new Republic of South Sudan to “respect human life”.

The Bishop made the remarks during the celebration of South Sudan’s independence at Gbudue Stadium in Yambio County on Saturday.

Munde urged the citizens of the new country to avoid tribal wars, murder, defilement, and gender inequality and any other activity that degrades or undermines human life.

“Let us have the heart of loving one another as sisters and brothers and learn how to respect each other’s cultures and learn to coexist happily,” said the bishop.

He said there should be a spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation not only amongst South Sudanese but with fellow brothers from North Sudan.

“Southerners could live in their own country like refugees, without freedom, therefore people fought for their rights to total freedom” said Munde.

Munde said that during the war the Church and Sudan council of churches was vital in helping in attaining food support and medical supplies to Internally Displaced People and refugees and providing educational services.

“After the war, all churches established strong relationship with the government but the government rarely seeks opinions from church leaders but were asked to open and close prayers in functions and ceremonies,” said the bishop.

In addition the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Tambura Yambio Barani Eduardo Hiiboro Kusalla said South Sudan’s independence day was made by the Lord.

Hiiboro said independence represented “freedom and respect and an opportunity for lasting peace and reconciliation in the new country.”

He added that the pursuit for justice will continue but from now on it will be through collaborations and no longer through confrontations.

“Anguish and fear as well as human sufferings are still present due to the long situation of conflict between the people of then Sudan” Hiiboro. It is hoped that with independence the South Sudanese will find unity and overcome the violent history of civil war.
