Sudan security services shut SPLM office in central state
July 14, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – Security authorities in Sudan’s central state of Al-Gezira ordered the suspension of the Northern sector of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), in what appears to be the harbinger of a countrywide crackdown on the South Sudan linked party.
Officials of Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) have threatened in the past to suspend the SPLM Northern sector (SPLMN) as soon as the South becomes independent, saying it would be considered an extension of a foreign party.
In a press release seen by Sudan Tribune, the SPLM said that its assistant secretary-general for political mobilisation in Al-Gezira State was summoned on Tuesday morning to appear before the deputy director of the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) in the state.
According to the press release, the SPLM official was informed of a decision by the state’s security committee to close down all SPLM offices, suspend its activities and freeze all of its contacts with other political forces.
The SPLM further reported that its branches in other localities of Al-Gezira state received identical directives.
A framework agreement signed earlier this month between the NCP and the SPLMN on the situation in the war-battered region of South Kordofan had collapsed after NCP hardliners objected to the accord’s recognition of the SPLM as a legal political party in the North.
Officials of the SPLM’s northern sector warned that any attempt by the NCP to crackdown on their party, especially in the North-South border states of South Kordofan and Blue Nile, could ignite an all-out war.
The SPLM’s stated vision for a “new” secular, federal and democratic Sudan is at odds with the NCP’s Islamist and authoritarian tendanices.
