Jonglei state: One week after independence cattle are still being slaughtered

July 16, 2011 (BOR) – Cattle are still being slaughtered a week after South Sudan’s independence day was celebrated in Jonglei state. Makuach Payam [district] of Bor county in Jonglei state, claims to have killed more than 100 in the first three days.

“The culture of killing a cow on a big day is a sign of happiness and joy in our culture but this [South Sudan Independence celebration] is extraordinary,” said Chol Anyuat Nyok, one of the people who participated in cow killing known as ‘gut de wong’ in Dinka Bor dialect.

“In our Payam [Makuach], we killed 112 cattle because the dream has come true,” said Maror Alier, now know as ‘Agut Mamer’ after the bull he killed on 9 July.

South Sudan’s independence is a result of January 2011 referendum promised in the 2005 peace accord that ended the second North – South civil war of 1983—2005 that started in Bor.

As celebrations continue in Jonglei state and messages of congratulations from various groups on the attainment of the Republic of South Sudan, the new country’s citizens expect a lot from the government in terms of public services.

In Jonglei state, where local feuds have resulted to unrest since the Comprehensive Peace Agreement halted North-South conflict, the main celebration is tight with future security.

“People will be rich. There will be no insecurity because the enemy [Khartoum government] is now in a different country,” said Jacob Lueth, as he tied-down his cow in a cattle camp near Bor town, the capital of Jonglei state.

The killing of over one hundred cattle in Makuach Payam is not a loss, he added “because we are marking a transition.”

CONGRATULATIONS

Jonglei state government congratulated the people of South Sudan under the leadership of the First President of the Republic, Salva Kiir Mayardit, in a letter signed by governor Kuol Manyang Juuk describing the independence as a “joyous and proud achievement.”

Leaders of Bor community thanked President Kiir and governor Kuol Manyang for the “long lasting freedom” they had achieved.

The letter, signed by Daniel Deng Kut, pledged continued allegiance to serving the interest of all South Sudanese through hard work and commitment to spirit of patriotism as a new nation.

Pigi and Pochala counties leaders and other groups sent messages of congratulation, seen by Sudan Tribune, to president Kiir.

JONGLEI STATE CHALLENGES

Since taking office as governor of Jonglei state in December, 2007, Kuol Manyang has maintained that roads construction remains a priority to improving security. The real work is yet to begin.

Jonglei’s weak and ill-equipped police force struggles to control the heavy population. The state’s citizens are struggling to afford the rising cost of goods.

You have all the rights to celebrate this wonderful achievement that had closed many family lineages in Dinka Bor in the course of bringing it to reality.

Dinka Bor people were slaughtered like goats and chickens by forces of doom (Riek Machar) who wanted to spoil all avenues of getting these wonderful celebrations this month.

The remnants of Bor people had all the rights to give thanks to God for stopping forces of doom from wiping them out on the face of the earth and for making the vision they stood for materialized into the freedom of people of South Sudan.

May God Bless you Bor people and increase your offsprings to show to the forces of doom that you cannot destroy completely what God had planted.

well done Bor Dinkas you are always a light of this country. you can bring anybody to the power and you can fired anyone in the power.

One thing I disagreed with my Bor Dinkas where my mum came from is the idea of forgiving the wicked man Riek machar after he committed crime in the names of ovrthrowing Dinkas government. that is what i don’t and still don’t like it.

To be clear. Dinka bor are really ruler with intelligence. they know how to tackle their enemies and make them surrendered just like Nyagat riek machar who lat himself be fool by white whor and evilsh so called ngudeng and foolsh wurrynyang.

In this world of today. people go to church to pray to God in order to be forgiven yet there are alot of doom community who don’t believe in God but useless godless like ngundeng and stupid useless wurrynyang.

South sudan should have been a good country if they were helping fighting arab but they were siding with arab in the name of food and power which is now still kept them under the shadow of doom in their future generations.

look now Riek machar is a coward who don’t have ability to do good but runing behind the scen trying to sneek by lie and fool which he never work for.

It is so good and great that the majurity of southerense knoew that during the war the So called opportunistic dog and great shallow minded and a coward at the same time was bussy eating with our welknown enemies arab.

Nuer educated people are enjoyed what they never deserved to get in south sudan. now you can see restricted riek machar walking under the shadow of of those he stabbed at the back during the struggle.

Doom and madness are in one commuinty who don’t accept one leader at the times but thinking like foolish people yet they are.
i am a son of well known liberator born in Agok form awan Chan and grown up in United Kingdom.
may god bless the Queen and people of south sudan and in particular Great Monyjeng aka DInkas.

Look who is talking. Do you think Dinka Bor are the only Tribes that fought during the war. We all suffer in this Struggle and tey you are here claiming yourself to be the best. The Leadership in SouthSudan is not given by Dinka Bor as you claimed it. Bhar El Ghazal were the one who picked John Garang, example Karobino Kanyin was the one who decided to let Garang be the leader. Becuase he was well know abroad. so please stop nonsense here. Let focus on UNITY and our New Nation ROSS.

    Delta,
Mr/Mrs.Dinka is not from Bor,he/she is from Bar al ghazal you are talking about[ From Awan Chan ] but his/her mom is from Bor.But i can disagree with him/her in one point that, why dinka Bor forgave Riek his wrong doing.Forgiveness is everywhere but if you are forgiven and you failed to recognized your forgiveness then God will be your judge.

God knows that dinka had forgiven Riek. His continues doom will be between him and God.I am not a tribalist but unionist.

“Forgive your enemies but don’t forget what they have done to you”.said the bible.

    May god bless us all.

I wonder sometimes about what people who wrote like this think about what Gajaak of Eastern Nuer may think about thier people that were killed by John Garang in 1980s.

While we attribute our weaknesses in defending ourself against civilians that attacked our land in 1991 to Dr. Reik Machar and Garang war. We need to understand this can have neggative affect on Garang’s family guys.

They questions is, are Gajaak clever than Dinka Bor that why Gajaak are not forgiving Garang, Garang family and Dinka in general or they don’t about their elders, children and women John Garang ordered SPLA to burn alive? just forget about the men we killed in confrontation.

I think we really need to build a country out of hatred. Let stop lays.
