Amum appointed as South Sudan peace minister, denies resignation reports

July 23, 2011 (JUBA) – South Sudan’s president Salva Kiir Mayardit on Saturday presided over swearing in of Pagan Amum Okiech, as minister for peace, after news reports and allegations that he had resigned from the government.

Cirino Hiteng, minister in the office of the president told press that Amum could not take an oath when other caretaker ministers were sworn last week following South Sudan’s independence because he was committed with other assignments.

“Comrade Pagan Amum has just taken an oath of the office before our president in a function administered by the chief justice. He has now assumed duties of the caretaker minister of peace, said Hiteng. He could not take an oath of office last week because he was fully engaged with other national assignments”, said Hiteng denying that Amum has resigned.

“I am not aware of this resignation. All I know is that he was busy that he failed to attend swearing function with other ministers”, he argued.

Amum expressed happiness and gave what he described as sincere thanks to the president of the Republic of South Sudan for trust he had in him to once again take him as caretaker minister and for being part of the SPLM and the government of the new nation.

“I have just taken an oath of the office presided over by our president comrade Salva Kiir Mayardit for appointing me once again as caretaker minister in the ministry of peace. This is the same ministry you all know to which I was appointed,” said Amum.

Amum was the minister for implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, which ended decades of conflict in 2005, and allowed South Sudan to secede through a January referendum.

The minister said there were a lot of challenges that the people of South Sudan together with their government needs to address as one nation.

“I would like to once again thank our people for determination and the humour at the referendum. It was indeed a very momentous and successful event that will be remembered for years to come. It did not change only change the map of Sudan, it also changed our destiny. It changed our lives. It changed our families. It changed our perspectives and relations. We must understand that referendum was an event, a hugely important event. It was a life changing event which we will never forget for many years to come”, explained Amum.

Thank you president Salva Kiir Mayrdit for showing to those who jump up and down seeking the position of Pagan Amum.

We splm/a need people like Pagan Amum because he has been working everyday for our country. Also, we need to be careful with those close traitors who take things in the meeting and expose their ill rumors base on their interest. We are watching!

Pagan holding of a powerful position of SPLM SG demonstrates fairness of the Dinka people which many people do not want to acknowledge in South Sudan.

Pagan is from a minor tribe and many of his tribesmen rebelled with their blind leader Dr. Lam Akol in 1991 but because of his hard work and loyalty to SPLM/A vision and cause, Pagan Amum and Oyay Deng were able to rise to some of the most powerful positions in this country without their tribesmen cloud to propel them to those positions.

This shows that Dinkas are not only fair in whatever they do to others but also suppresses their need for power in favor of their best performing allies from minor tribes.

Pagan Amum is welcome to stay in his powerful position of SPLM SG.
Your occupancy of that position speaks volume about Dinka people and their system of rewards.

No one will forget Dinka fairness in case of Pagan Amum, Oyay Deng, Hoth Mai, and Obote Mamur rise to positions of influence in SPLA/M. These were some of the people who were left without followers when their tribesmen rebelled against people of South Sudan liberation struggle in 1990s but they managed to rise through their host community (Dinka).

Good for others to emulate Dinka fairness.

This is a clear manifestation of the regional and Western interference in our business. Believe me Mr. President; they will make you make more wrong decision in the near future. The reasons given that Mr. Amum was unable to attend oath ceremony with other care-takers are not good enough. He himself (Mr. Amum) did not comment on the rumors of his resignation. It is an indication that a concession has been made under pressure. What a bad play!

I am quit sure that foreign interventions will not allow this newborn country to take the right decisions that guarantee its good governance. They will dictate what will ensure their control of our throats and assure the proper utilization of our resources and strategic location for their mere interests. The West and most neighboring countries are butchers with big knives waiting for the buffalo to fall.

O ye people of South Sudan be careful. Pagan and all corrupt politicians and junta must go. There is no reason to accept petro-dollar and aid thieves to continue devastating our future.

Mr. President, you should resign before loosing all dignity and shattering our hopes and expectations.

Long live the people of South Sudan.

I don’t think I need to go to school again because what I have and I know is enough for me to teach such little-mined people like you who survive on lies and deceit.

What type of democracy exists in South Sudan that you want lecture us about? How much do you know about politics bearing the alias that you have? Don’t boast here with that little English that learned at the refugee camp few years ago. You are bragging for nothing here, it’s you who need to go to school and learn more.

    Dear my fellow Citizens,
I wonder why the president is taking too long to announce his ministers and keep boring us with his so called caretakers ministers. I have tremedous respect for his Hon. Pagan Amum, but I think there are some fishy stuff going on in this governemnt and a proper investigation must be launch when high profile ministers like Pagan are accuse of stealing public funds, this is probably one of the reasons he didn’t want to take up this role for the last two weeks. Mr. President we need change and let all the imcapable ministers in your past government find somehere esle to work.

The government of the Republic of South Sudan will only be formed in 45 days after independent of our country. Therefore, Mr.President is taking his time to seek popular consultation & advices before announcing his government. Untill then, we’ll wait till 45 days are over.

You would haven’t breath with that up to now,try it now and you will regret. There is no country that can be ruled by only one tribe. I know there is only one Dinka community from one state who are sources of tribalism, sources of lies and access of evil. But they will never and never achieve what they are day dreaming of again, is gone once and for all.

Here is the truth for every reader who contribute on Sudan tribune about HE Pagan Amum. he have submitted his resignation for both CHAIRPERSON & MINISTER OF PEACE saying that (HE have Been away from his family for long time and now some of his children don’t know him)
But it was refused by Mr. President
He told him that he was not the very person who elected him as chairmen so he should submitted his resignation to the congress.
until the day before yesterday the president send some delegation to his home to convince him about his resignation on both position.

    God Bless

pagan amum and cirino hiteng are not telling the truth.

some people were appointed to lie in the office of the president. they think it is always necessary to lie and not tell the truth when resignation of somebody is not a shame. even americans and british tell the truth of the story.

if you convinced pagan amum not to resign you would have just said it.

any sound minded reader would sense the fishy smell in the whole story. if pagan amum did not submit his resignation as floated all over media two weeks ago, then why did it take more than a week for the ministers to come out to the media and deny it?

this shows that the whole two weeks the president and the rest have been trying to convince pagan amum not to resign. maybe yesterday they succeeded to convince him.

the minister should not lie that pagan amum was too busy doing his duties that prevented him from taking oath as caretaker with the rest of caretaker ministers. that is a white lie!

pagan busy doing what in his office when he would not work in the office per the president’s decree that removed him together with the rest until he was reinstated as caretaker minister and took aoth of office? pagan amum was not busy also as lied for by hiteng but enjoyed evening hours every day near the river nile. his close people confirmed that he was about to resign if the president approved his letter of resignation.

please learn to tell the truth about the issue because it has never been a shame to tell that so and so requested for resignation but was convinced not to.

you will lose public trust in whatever statement you give unless you learn to tell the truth.

Thank for appointing Amum as a minister becoz he
is a hardworker but take care when you are going
to appoint the cabinet and the ministry posts becoz
some communities which like rebelling need their
people to be appointed.if you don’t do so then they
will rebel again but that will bring much destruction

AT THIS RATE MY DEAR SOUTH SUDANESE, i predict doom! Please do not abuse your right to expression. None of your comments show a sign of STATEHOOD (rather TRIBAL INCLINATION). I think this was the same situation which caused the split of the Sudan (Marginaliation) if am not wrong. So Bari, Nuer, Toposa, Dinka…name them, you all have the same reddish blood flowing in your veins……everyone is special in his own way whether he comes from a tribe of thousands, hundreds or one for that matter. This tribalistic inclination which many portray will surely split the new beautiful country……
AGAIN am urging the younger generation ( i presume those using the internet) not to emulate some of the older counterparts who are corrupt. Please show some self-control and desist the need to reply a state-splitting tribal comment in the same manner….For example if a commentor writes: “Dinkas r corrupt tribalistic taking all government posts” just reply: ” Not all dinkas, my dear brother. Not all dinkas. By the way how is you day to day? Am fine here, GOD bless you, have a nice day”
ONE day i hope to see my CHILDREN seat together with DENG, LODU, LUGA, RIAK, ODUHO without feeling the need to isolate.
Please my dear friends, lets us the youth spread the GOSPEL of LOVE…..
ONE LOVE, JAH, GOD, ALLAH BLESS you all.
TO you reading this SPREAD the WORD!!!!!! ONE LOVE.

P.s IF I TOUCH THE WRONG BUTTON AND RAISE SOME BITTER FEELINGS, AM SORRY. I ONLY MEAN HARMONY.
