Three killed, dozens injured in road accident near Juba

* Update with police statements

July 26, 2011 (JUBA) – Three people were killed and nine injured in a fatal bus accident, which occurred at Naro, located 40km east of Juba, the South Sudan capital, eye witnesses say.

The Bakulu bus number UAL 727H was destined for Uganda when it collided with an oil tanker carrying plate number CE 803A heading in the opposite direction at about 8:30am on Tuesday along the Juba-Nimule road.

Those injured have been rushed to Juba teaching hospital.

An eye witness, who spoke to Sudan Tribune largely blamed the driver of the tanker, whom he accused of failure to stay on his side of the road but this has not been confirmed.

The manager of Bakulu buses, who, only identified himself as Okello, preferred not to discuss the matter later, when contacted.

Last month, Uganda’s Transport Licensing Board (LTB) grounded three buses, among them Bakulu, over alleged breach of driving rules and regulations. This among other required that each bus plying long routes needed two drivers.

However, Northern region Police spokesman, Johnson Kilama told Sudan Tribune they will launch an investigation to find out the actual cause of Tuesday’s accident.

“We believe something must have gone wrong. We have launched an inquiry into the matter and details will be availed later,” Kilama said by phone from Uganda’s northern town of Gulu.

The incident comes less than two months ago after a similar incident left over 30 people dead and several people injured. The accident occurred when another Bakulu bus collided with Baby coach along the same route.

In March this year, over 30 people were injured in another incident when a bus destined for Juba overturned in Koro village, about 8km south of Uganda’s northern district of Gulu.

The minister of transportation law down the driving laws and the use of lane accordingly. The overtake is the main and usual cause of collisions in Africa and that is because the proper use of lane is not practice or simply ignored by drunk drivers. The South Sudan need to start designing/constructing the two lane so that the overtake should be reduce because most accidence occurred because of drivers overtaking each other. Also, the speeding need to be regulated and the over speeding must be cited so that he/she could learn the proper use of road signs. We need to work on those and I hope the accidence should be reduce. Thanks

The minister of transportation should formulate the driving laws that will regulate the use of lane accordingly. The overtake is the main and usual cause of collisions in Africa and that is because the proper use of lane is not practice or simply ignored by drunk drivers.

This is because of bad roads, bad drivers, bad cars and bad traffic police services. All are due to corruption and backwardness. One of the drivers may be running away from a checkpoint where he was afraid to be asked bribery. Full stop.

May the dead rest in peace and the injured heal.

We survived narrowly in the same bus accident on Saturday the 23th of July. The Kampala coach we were traveling to Kampala, Uganda broken its main ring and ran off the road.
Thank God nobody was injured. The incident happened between Atiak and Gulu. It took 4hrs later to arrived Gulu and continue to Kampala till we arrived at 11:30 pm.
However, these Kenyan and Ugandan drivers are very dangerous when drivering. They drinks and driver at high speed. God help us.

Let us not put our blaming on Minister of Transport without finalizing the cause of that accidence.I hope the Minister did a lots than any Minister in South.

Death is unfortunate and unavoidable, but what we suppose to look at is, the rule and regulations concerning about the regular death always occurs between S.Sudan and Uganda and mostly it do happened under Ugandans side.

We need this Issue to be focus accordingly with no failure such that, the business people should have to transacts their businesses safely.
