Lakes State Governor to sue newspaper for defamation
July 28, 2011 (JUBA/RUMBEK) – In response to reports that he embezzled US$27m and wired it directly to Kenya, the governor of Lakes state has resolved to take legal action against Al Shuruk television, saying the Egyptian-based independent media not only defamed him, but further tarnished his image.
The same allegation, according to a 10 December 2010 statement, issued by the state government, was further published by various media outlets within North Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, specifically citing Alwan newspaper in its 29 November 2010 edition.
Speaking at a press conference in Juba, the South Sudan capital, Mayay maintained his innocence, arguing that his legal team, led by advocate, Hanadi Alrasheed remains set for a legal battle in Juba high court, where the case has been filed. The case is before Justice Dhuria Dhara.
“This matter has been a disadvantage for my political career. All I can tell you is that this allegation of smuggling $27m into a foreign country is a baseless allegation and we are determined to pursue the matter further until the truth comes out,” a confident looking Mayay told journalists.
Al Shuruk, according to one of the governor’s lawyers, acted contrary to Section 229 of South Sudan’s penal code.
Asked why it took him so long to file the case, the governor said, “We filed the case sometime back, but as you are aware, these cases go through several procedures within the ministry of legal and constitutional development.”
Hearing of the case, Sudan Tribune has learned, will take immediate effect, while the Lakes State Governor remains optimistic that victory for him is certain.

The governor sued the newspaper editors or television called al shuruk ,so if the news reporters are found not guilty and have more potential evidences and witness to show legal documents to the state government and approved by state law makers that Chol did corruption by embezzling us 27 million via kenya.

How will he get intouch with these medias,the fact is that the governor should clean himself by presenting all the transactions including 18million dollar which were donated as for road construction in 2010.and the state resources documents as this now become a color which will not be wash easily in the future and of course will affect your inonsene children,however it is going to be two years following the issue be no out come.
& with fact this case is not supposed to be investigated by the court,supposed the governor to be relief first by the president and send for investigation under selected committee by presidency decree b’se a judge can be bribes simply not to give the fact finding

Am very confident that Eng. Chol, the governor will win this case no matter how long and complicated the case might be.
I read it myself in the newspaper when I was in Khartoum, and never believed what happened is true but to tarnished his image by the people we all know. However, my advice to the governor is, the bird that dance on the road might have a singer in the bush. This mean that there were those who provided this baseless allegation of embezzling 27 million dollars to Al Shuruk Television to announced. please prove yourself innocent before court so that whoever is behind this will be shown in the daylight. Go on and never give up.

In fact I agree with John Gum comment that because of proper investigation and court proceedings the Governor must either relieved or resigned. If he win the case than the media house will be responsible for all that.
eventhough there are doubt points in this accusation it is governor himself to prove innoncent. I know there must be some fire some where but let’s see justice first.

I agree with u guys on your commentary,therefore we really need governor to come out from this darkness to prove his ”innoncent”before committee/proper judges b’se governor has been subjected with so many charges tag against him during his 2010 april election campaigns,he was charge of corruption and ”preferential treatment” with evidence when he was a minister of agriculture and then minister of physical infrastructure but we managed to bring him up,however our advise to the governor is to stop depending himself throught media ,there is nothing proving this allegations as baseless at the movement.
in the midst of fact, electrol college is an experience with individual Enthusiasm that show there is something atleast being Intensify in term of wealths if become a governor even if not too much like 27 million.
