July 30, 2011 (BENTIU) – The governor of Unity state met on Saturday with rebels who are negotiating peace deal with the South Sudan ruling party and urged them to unite under the leadership of Peter Duop Gatluak.
On Saturday 23 July the, Pakur Koch County in Unity state witnessed the mysterious murder of a rebel leader, Gatluak Gai, who negotiated a peace deal with Juba’s government. The South Sudan army denied the killing of the rebel leader, while his second in command, Marko Chuol Ruei, claimed responsibility for the death of his leader accusing him of dishonoring the peace agreement.
John Nguanyeat Gai Gatwich Kuey, a brother to Gatluak Gai who was involved in the peace negotiations, rejected rebels’ claims that his brother was in contact with the Sudanese army. He went to say that some SPLA and state officials were angered by the high military rank — Lt General — his brother got in the negotiations and plotted to kill him.
The governor of Unity State Taban Deng Gai Saturday told the group of rebel leaders, while meeting them in his office on Saturday, that in the new Republic of South Sudan aims to make sure that “our children are getting good education, good health facilities, good roads and good food”.
Taban further stressed achieving welfare in the newly independent South Sudan does not imply that all its citizens should become soldiers. He added that not development without security.
He also exhorted the stop cattle rustling which become the worst practice in South Sudan at a time where the government authorities work hard to stop violence and launch national development projects.
Deng said he seriously felt sorry for mysterious death of Gatluak Gai, which was caused by “his own mistake”. He further said it would not be a blame of his two commanders Peter Duop Gatluak and Marko Chuol Ruei and their soldiers “as you already put it forward as per your explanations,” said governor Taban.
He strongly called upon all rebels to be united under the leadership of major. General Duop Gatluak, and pointed out that anything needed for their integration will be decided by the central government in Juba. Taban emphasized the state government acts as advisers but the decision is taken at the SPLA headquarters in Juba.
Speaking during the meeting, Duop Gatluak, head of command of the rebels repeated that Gatluak Gai’s death is due to the latter’s mistake. He also said his combatants are committed to the peace process and willing to integrate the army of the Republic of South Sudan.
He added, “We ran away, at the time, for bush because of bad system of leadership” within the SPLA management and now “our coming back” is to join all South Sudanese for the development of the new country, he said.
He asserted that all the South Sudanese should be certain they will not return to war again. At the beginning of the SPLA “we were the first” Gatluak said, adding “no one should say it belongs” to him or her alone, we all struggle and fight for the right of South Sudan”.
Gatluak firmly said that they are waiting for their integration, and will accept to be redeployed in any location according to the SPLA instructions.
He also said that starting from Saturday 30 July they are part of the “new SPLA”

I was in struggle when i was only 10 years old, but yet my willingness to servce this country of ours is still there. an like many others, in particular the president Kiir himself should have known this better to not letting the cookies lover comes to advice him while intrusively chaging his heroe that he did for this country, and now he is the only one who can direct the service foreward and the protection of all to those who dont do it right. Kiir need to think big, and always needs to thinks sharp about all his fellows men that had died to have what we are called a country today.
