South Sudan rebel leader Peter Gatdet returns to Juba after peace deal with gov’t

August 4, 2011 (JUBA) – The leader of the rebel group known as the South Sudan Liberation Army (SSLA), Major General Peter Gatdet Yak has returned to Juba to make peace with the government.

Former South Sudan rebel leader Peter Gadet (FILE)
Gatdet arrived on Juba aboard a Jetlink plane from Nairobi on Wednesday in an unexpected move that has been welcomed by the public.

In a press statement, the SSLA spokesperson Bol Gatkuoth, who accompanied his leader, said they have returned to Juba in “acceptance” of President Salva Kiir’s offer of amnesty to the rebels in order to end the violence.

Gatkuoth said his leader, Gatdet, had been conducting close door dialogue in Nairobi, Kenya, with officials from the Republic of South Sudan who were delegated by President Kiir to resolve the conflict with the rebel group.

He added that his group was also interested in making peace with the government as an assurance to the other rebel groups that “genuine” peace was still possible with the government following the mysterious killing of another rebel leader, three days after signing the ceasefire.

Last week, a rebel leader from Unity state, Gatluak Gai, was killed after signing a peace deal with Juba. His family accuses the South Sudan army of orchestrating the murders but leading members of his group said they killed him because he was not committed to the peace deal.

The government’s spokesperson, Barnaba Marial Benjamin, while shaking hands with the rebel spokesperson, Gatkuoth, congratulated the rebel leaders for accepting the amnesty announced by the president on Independence Day celebrations on 9 July.

SSLA launched rebellion last year in Unity state against the government in what the rebels claimed was a war against corruption and tribalism that had befallen the government in Juba and wanted to topple the leadership.

However, a five-page press release purporting to be issued by SSLA said that the rebel group was not part of the ceasefire and that Gadet and “his spokesman” reached a unilateral deal with Kiir. The alleged rebel statement said their leader had defected and they had designated Maj. Gen. James Gai Yoach as their new leader.

    Dinka Dominated SPLA,

You committed many grammatical errors which make your comment looks dull and uninformed.
If our brothers go forth and back constantly, why not watch keenly whether this could be attached to their culture.
peter Gatdet’s deal without his soldiers would be tasteless.
Let’s see how Naath plays a fool’s game in the broad daylight.

In Nuer culture one is concerned with his own stomach not others, so why not we give Peter Gatdet’s share.
A snake cut from its’ head would always render it whole body harmless and ineffective.

Hahahahaha peter Gatdet returned in five months time!

Victor leave me alone to reform this deform Nuer gangster.

if you are really not so stupid and foolish as i can see, than you are not different from those who committed crimes every years in south Sudan.

If you go back to the histroy of south Sudan. you will find out that the majority who committed crimes are nuer. because Arab used them ever time yet you are blindly trying to cover their mass up in this country.

I know that not all of Nuer people who committed this terrorist act but majority of them have done wrong in south sudan.

pointing finger on those wicked people help alot to lat them a ware that they have doing wrong things.

Victor were in the hell can people just ignore the person who is committing crimes and yet you are so dumbs to tell the trust here.

Victor the world knew that the savges people in south sudan are nuer start from where you lived and you will see or hear that hundrads of crimes committed in world 6% of them are nuer crimes committed.

The nyagat know how to defected and surrendered just like what they have been doing all the times..

I know that Nuer have great leaders people but they fail to convence them to stay since everone in nuer community want to be president at one.

Stupid Victor the divided nuer community will never rest untill the finsh.

Peter Gatdet is very clever more than George Athor Deng and all other rebel leaders.
Peter Gatdet knows very well negotiating peace outside Juba will make his enemies to take advantage of the situation and kill him in the process like Gatluak Gai.

Peter Gatdet made a surprised return to Juba to prevent his enemies from killing him.

    Very clever move indeed.

Peter Gatdet aim of rebelling from SPLA in the first place was to cut the queue of promotion.
Give him rank of Lt General and assign him work in Bilpam, Juba so that he cannot be near troops till he retires.

Nuer youth should be careful about their leaders who use them for their personal gains.

See the antagonism the guy had been stocking up between Nuer and Dinka that had left many dead and now he is in Juba laughing and enjoying lunch with his former colleagues from Dinka especially Ayuen Alier whom he accused of not promoting him to higher position.

Nuer community must wake up like Dinka Community. Dinka Community does not follow leaders who have no right to cause havoc. Example is George Athor Deng; one of the most feared Dinka commanders but he had now been reduced to a refugee in Khartoum because of his poor thinking and foolish actions.

Where SSLA supporter and Mi Diit who were supporting Peter Gatdet without knowing the guy intention?

Nuer community from now onward should stop blind support of Nuer leaders.

Dinka dominated SPLA and John, south Sudan needs peace to be a successful nation and any real south Sudanese national would love to see our baby country go through peace and development.

Wise people always prefer to more friends than having a single enemy. We Southerners haven’t got rid of our common enemy that oppressed us and planted tribalism on us so to weakened us for their interests.

I welcome Gadet back and will be a welcoming news if other brothers that rebel against their people come back so that we could eye the real enemy with strength and unity that we showed during our referendum.

Nuer people learn through their eyes actually, but not through their minds. “Peter Gatdet is just a rubbish and a narrow-minded leader whom Nuer people believe in him that he is doing the right thing.” What make Peter Gatdet accepted the amnesty and return to Juba for the second time? Because of the death of Gatluak Gai? Shame on Peter Gatdet and others Nuer foods Generals. Why Nuer people don’t learn from the following things which their leaders have done in the past such as, when Dr Riek Machar rebelled and killed the people in Southern Sudan, but he came back to join the SPLA. Paulino Matiip Nhial rebelled and killed the people in Southern Sudan, but he came back and join the SPLA. Taban Deng Gai rebelled and killed the people in Southern Sudan, but he came and join the SPLA. Now, why do Nuer complained that Dinka people are dominating the SPLA, and Nuer are the people who are damaging their reputations. I have never seen a useless people like Nuer in my life.

The only thing that I recommanded for Nuer people in Southern Sudan is to rebell, steal, and loot the properities of others people like they are known of doing such things by others communities in Southern Sudan. Where complain raise always, Nuer people are they first group to emerge.

    Shame on all Nuer.

for the first time on this wedsite, i have to agree with your commences. Nuer youth must learn not simply follow a person without careful analysis. most of Athor’s force are from Lou Nuer. Followers of Gatluak Gai and Peter Gatdet almost all are Nuer. But do you know why Nuer always rebeled? Equality is their culture and they are not always comfortable when things are going the wrong direction. So my friend Nuer will remain a big headeach in RSS if things will continue this same dirty looting of public resources for the last six years.

Peter Gatdet left SPLA foolishly but he has come back wisely. He choosed to negotiate the peace process with government while in Juba. What a clever primitive general is this!!!. He cut off all lies and false accusations which could even waste his life. He declared his acceptance to amnesty and surprisingly arrived to Juba before his enemy could even plan for his destiny. wel, all we want is to have peace in our country. So, you are highly welcome Sir and wish you well.

It’s not late for other renegade generals to follow Gen Gadet’s footprints and come back home, there is no good life in the bush especially if you don’t have good and trusted friends to support and fund your movement.

Rebellion now is an old fashion of regime change, it takes too long, costly, destructive and may not succeeded if not planned well.

Gen Gadet should be given this mission, go and bring back Abyei, because it’s his rebellion that the Arabs saw as a weakness and excuse to enter Abyei.

SHAME, SHAME SHAME TO THE GENERAL AND HIS SUPPORT BASE.
MR. GEN. HAS FAIL TO THE LITMUS TEST OF SALTINESS IN THE ISSUE AT STAKE B’SE HE DOES NOT KNOW HOW THE WINNERS SUCCEED.

WINNERS DON’T DO DIFFERENT THINGS. THEY DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY by STARTING AN ACTION PLAN AS FOLLOWS:
    1. What you want to achieve
    2. How you expect to achieve it
    3. When you plan to achieve it

Here, Gen. Peter Gatdet is playing with fire after killing innocent people at Mayom and Mankien some days back and is now trying to return back. What will be the feeling of those who lost their love ones? This question will linger in our bereaved brothers mind and may lead to revenge.

Gen. Gatdet be dependable and practice loyalty. The old adage says, “an ounce of loyalty is worth more than a pound of cleverness,” is universal and eternal. Is that not applying to you? Ability is important but dependability is crucial. If you have someone with all the ability but if he is not dependable, will you like him to be part of your team? No, not at all. Maj. Gen. Yes, it is a humble decision that had been taken by General Gatdat, we are all Southerners and this Land belong to all of us either Dinka nor Nuer can claim that South Sudan belong to me alone. All tribes of Southerner Sudan need not to tear up the New Country including the two tribes mentioned above. But only few barbaric; preaching atrocities and division among us and whishing to destabilize our State like those of Dinka Dominate SPLA and the rest of his colleagues who used the discriminated words and writing a hatred statements against others tribes in this crucial period. We are not yet come out from the hand of the Fundamentalist Regime in Khartoum.

Without prejudice to the declaration of the amnesty by the President on Independent day to all the Rebellions which was broken by the assassination of Mr.Gatluak Gai; following the acceptance of the amnesty by Gatdat Yak and his forces to be integrated into the system. I hope they will not be deceived by the sympathetic of peace that they are carrying on to Juba.

Mr. President this people are committed to the peace in our Land and looking for the prosperity of the nation, eradication of the tribalism conflicts, corruption which became as a disease in the minded of politicians and the post holders including Under-Secretaries of your Country. You are only Doctor who will treat that diseased which has been settled long time into their heart since 2005; by taken a systematic and strong decision against them to safe yourself vis-à-vis the International Community.

    Thanks Bush,

You have hit the nail on the head. When Peter Gatdet rebelled, Arabs in Khartoum saw it as if South Sudan’s independence will disappeared. The bad things is that people who supported the idea of rebellion dead in vain. Families of those killed must blame all rebel leaders and must hold them responsible of their sons and daughters’ death. It is not bad to have accepted peace but many questions of the innocent lives lost without no reasons must remain in mind. I hope nobody or any General will repeat this anymore in the future.

My friend this is a good move made by comerate Gatdet, there is no more to say then to congratulate him for coming back. This is what we want him to do.So that our people should reason before following anybody who decide to go the bush, now those who follow him will be a shame and those who were kill during his bush time will blame him for their death.

    Augustino Dong,

You are an idiot, nuer never rebelled against spla they just protested against the idea of a dictatorial islamic united sudan of geoge hasan kongor, ahmed pieng and alier bashir jaafer in defence of democracy. Are you in khartoum now? Huh where is ator? Gatdet must convince him too.
Why do you always strugle with yourself like dr okuk aka dinka dominated refugees?
We have defeated you fairly home and away.

Never accuse riek machar the dinka rescuer who stopped the nuer civilians from cratching the coward dinka to nothing when they got annoyed over your useless war and the big mistake you made of taking their generosity of feeding you and donating their children freely to the liberation as cowardness.
Same Riek machar was also the one who rescued you at Kakuma in the hands of 1000 nasir minors when you miscalculated your being food majority of 50 000 in the UN food manifest as bravery.
We trashed you like nothing using our own basic nuer combat stratagies and own nuer high tech weapons until the UN beg 1000 nuer kids to forgive the food majority.
Free and fair in the presence of daniel moi, kofi anan and the Turkana paramount chief Lotur

Even I have reports that salvator and chaung have hired khalif taban and ahmed pieng to poison gatdet in juba hotel.

    Nasir community warning:
we have detected the shit in the one wicked monkey salvator chaung juuk who want to destabilise mayom and korfulus panjak communities in our name!

The prophets and the nuer martyrs of referendum are soon going to stick your own shit in your own ass unless you come clean of vampire cofin befor too late

Peter Gadet should be relegated from the SPLA rank. The government should impeach Peter Gadet with the crime he has committed against the state. Impunity will turn South Sudan in to a banana republic. How many times does the government granted amnesty to Peter Gadet and the situation of Peter Gadet’s defection from the government doesn’t change?. Peter Gadet should be summarily executed. The government should not put the horrible crime committed by Peter Gadet in deaf ear.

As a Dinka by tribe i will never and never recognise any move being taken by Nuer as a community.the likes of Machar and the community at large acception of few who are well known to the brave community .the rest are nyagat .the term applicable on any rebellion organise by Nuer community.i would like to inform my community that Gatdet is for a planninp within Juba goverment he wanted to try assissenation while in Juba, which will be very impossible,my community ,let it takes what it will cost us to protect our leadership ,and a good message to Nuer community at large is shame on you .

    Mr.Martin

The impeachment of Gatdat that you are looking for will collapse your dream of controlling others tribes in South and will be the disasters for your future if you wish to continuous colonizing all tribes in South. You will be charge of the offence of crime commit against the peace loving people etc…. please be careful about your words; don’t be like the Dinka Dominate which actually identify himself.don’t try to spend your life into the jail of ICC; better be a peace lover in our Community then to used the discriminate words.

Dear writers and readers of R.S.S,

let’s try harder this time to learn from our mistakes that we made against our lives in the paste and in the present time, and follow the civilisation world. Common things like revenge something against somebody else in terms of words or killing someone else when someone else from different tribe does those bad thing against someone is really backwardness and if we still follow evile act, then my dear southerners, we wouldn’t be near to smell the modernity of the world of today.
The world of today is acting its attitudes different ways, example, Osman bin-Ladden is an Arab by birth and by nationality, however the world of today is treating Osman bin Ladden evile act as individual and as per those other people who involve to be his followers. So, why can we learn from all these examples of civilised world and we treat those individual like Peter Gatdet, George Athor, Ayyii Akol and many others as blinded individual and we hunt them where they are like when America with other civilised nations hunting Osman Bin Ladden in hidding.
Dear bro and sisers, let’s be realistic and stop talking lies and nonsense that make generalisation of people within certain tribe when some bad things happen. When some bad things happen that have been done by an individual, please let’s hold up our breathing of talking about all tribe, however let’s pick out that particular person and we write articles about him/herself not his/her tribe who are just there innocently.

    Thanks

    Lok T.Simon.

Perhaps Gatdet has courage and boldness to just do that for the victims there. I think he will likely extend an apology to the victims if someone tell him with respect and dignity why it is extremely important to apologize for victims now. I am just wondering who will tell him there in the executive office, especially when it seems everyone within the executive branch has a bloody hand in the past, and Gatdet would likely reply back to anyone approaching him to make an apology, what about you, did you apologize to them when you killed them in the past. That is where everything just stuck there and fade away without delieverance of justice in the new nation of ours.

Making us your enemy instead of your brother will result in disasters to you Dinka some days.
