Over 5,000 refugees from South Kordofan arrive in Unity State for settlement

By Bonifacio Taban Kuich

August 5, 2011 (BENTIU) – Over 5,000 refugees have arrived in South Sudan’s Unity State, according to the UN and other organisations working in the are, after being displaced by fighting over the last month between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) in the north Sudan state of South Kordofan last June.

The SPLA say the fighting erupted after the SAF attempted to disarm them in the run up to South Sudan’s independence on July 9. During the North-South civil war disenfranchised groups from the Nuba Mountains in South Kordofan joined the Southern-based SPLA in the war against Khartoum.

Since South Sudan became independent, Khartoum has demanded that SPLA members from North Sudan move to South Sudan, disarm or integrate into SAF. Khartoum says that the fighting, which began in Kadugali on July 5 was triggered by an SPLA attack on a police station.

Around 70,000 people are estimated to have been displaced by the fighting. Most are thought to have moved north but some, like the 5,113 who entered Unity State, moved southward into newly independent South Sudan.

On Thursday Unity State officials witnessed the Situation in Parieng County where many of the refugees had arrived.

A joint committee consisting of internationals NGO’s and the Unity State government has agreed to offer immediate permanent settlement to refugees from South Kordofan in Parieng County.

The commissioner of Parieng Mabeak Lang Bilkuey and the Abdul Elbagi Ali the of Elbouram, across the border in South Kordofan have indicated that Yida would be an appropriate place to resettle refugees coming from South Kordofan.

Bilkuey added that it is the task of state government and his county to allocate a good land for these refugees settlement in the state.

Hussein Algumballa a representative of the Nuba refugees urged international NGOs to provide humanitarian assistance. Algumballa briefed the United Nations agencies and Unity State government officials during their visits to Parieng on the solutions for the refugees, who he said were suffering in Yida.

He said that the situation of refugees in Yida is becoming worse every day since they had travelled for 13 days to escape the violence in South Kordofan.

David Mulbah United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) protection officer based in Unity State said that the best allocation of refugees must be a minimum of 50 kilometres away from the border of the two countries. He said that poor roads in the area would be a major issue for settlers in Parieng County.

The Unity State deputy governor William Dawut Riak joined both UN agencies and the state officials in pledging to find a good environment for the settlement of refugees.

Riak said: “The first thing is that we don’t want the refugees to be settle along the border as we already notice what had happen in Jaw and the South Kordofan, so we need to put the refugees in good places and also to have good educations, health’s services and others but not to defended on reliefs alone but to get involved in the agriculture activities”.

He added that he will forward the case to both the state and national governments to find an amicable solution in order to come up with a policy as soon as possible for the settlement of refugees in Unity State. He added that it would not be up to the international community alone to carry out task.

Riak said his government would join hands with development partners to find better solutions for the Nuba refugees.

Arabs in North Sudan are trying to get rid of Africans in Sudan through “ethnic cleansing” and “genocide”. It is high time for our African tribes in Darfur, Nuba Mts, and Blue Nile to open their eyes widely and join hands to get rids of Arabs instead of them getting rid of us.

    Dear Southern Kordufan refufees,

Feel at home in South Sudan. One day, God will give you your rights: right of Self-determination to decide your destiny, and right to live free in the land of your ancestors.

Unity is strength as the saying goes. Africans need to unite themselves to sort out the problem of marginalization in Sudan. I wish Yusuf Kuow was still alive to unite stupid people like Mohammed Ali who enjoy enthrallment and slavery of Arabs. It is very clear that the Arabs wanted to kill all the African tribes in Sudan otherwise the Africans will leave their cradle land to Arabs whose originated place is widely known as Arabia. This time round the Arabs will face the bravery of Africans especially the problem of border demarcation. Ibrahim Kalil is coming from Darfur to Khartoum again. Mohammed Ali, whose side are you on?. People like you make me sick!. Your people have been displaced while you are still backing up Arabs in Khartoum, what kind of stupid are you?. Remember there is saying “when going gets tough the tough get going”. Don’t worry the SPLA will take care of that mess in Blue Nile and Southern Kordofun. Long live All African tribes in Sudan.
Long live South Sudan defence force.

When will some of our south Sudanese politicians stop hypocrisy and start to think realistically? What sense it makes to talk about helping refugee from northern sudan when our so-called citizens of RSS themselves are living under endemic famine since the beginning of the civil war to date, living just like refugee in their own country? How can that dwarf called Riek Machar hypocritically talk about sheltering or resettling those 5,000 displaced person from northern sudan while people of unity state under the corrupt leadership of governor Taban Deng,Gai are living like inhuman without decent shelter and going without food on daily basis regardless of the 2% of oil revenue allocated to his state for service delivery there.

So, from where are you going to find the resource to spend on the refugee when you don’t them for your starving people of unity state, hypocrisy isn’t ??
If you have resource to spend in helping southern kordofan refugee then why are you unable to reparate millions of our internally and internationally displaced southern Sudanese for resettlement in their homeland, how, can you help those refugee when you struggling to look after those southern returnee from northern sudan with some have already returned to north as they prefer to live as the so-called second class citizens rather than to starve as first class citizens in southern sudan! Hypocrisy is a sin, as Bible says help yourself first before you attempt to help your brother! I have nothing against those poor people of southern kordofan but I don’t want those hypocrite southern politician to use their misery for political consumption and not on humanitarian grounds,God knows my intention.

If SPLM genuinely wants to help those poor people of Nuba let it advise El Hilu to stop insurgency there and genuinely engage in peaceful settlement of the root causes of the problem, let SPLM not encourage rebellions in northern sudan because that will end up victimizing the poor people there which will backfire on us at the end like those five thousand refugee that have been displaced to our poor country. Why SPLM is supporting El Hilu whose, rebellion has the same motives as that of Gorge Athur Dut, so what is different between him and Athur if he simply took arm because he didn’t win the election for the governorship of southern kordofan state ?? Let Hilu make peace wirh Khartoum so as to end the suffering of his people ones and for good.

It is something very shameful indeed if people in Sudan are still being marginalized and forced to scatter all over within Sudan.
Second, the government of Southern Sudan under the feign leadership of Salva Kiir Miyardit had completely forget about the Nubian people. The Nubia people fought against arabs and many of them died in the war especially in Gilo River. Today, why did Salva Kiir turned Nubian people down like they were not in the Movement?

If the Late Dr John Garang de Mabior was alive, then I don’t think whether the Nubian people should be suffering like this. Many atrocities are still happening in Southern Sudan such as insecurity within the Southern Sudanese Civilians, such as the Dinka Ngok of Abyei, the Dinka Ruweng Community of Biemnom county, and the Dinka Panaruu of Panrieng County in Unity State. All these communities on the horn of Sudan are indeed facing many consequences and Salva Kiir Miyardit turned away himself from these communities.

If Akon county of Dinka Awan-Chan in which Salva Kiir Miyardit belong is the one in place of Nuba, Abyei, Ruweng Biemnom and Panaruu of Panrieng, then Salva Kiir should have to take an initiative and solution about what to do to free these communities. Salva Kiir Miyardit is a weak and a weak leader full of cowardice reputations and hegemony in which he likes his own home cabinets of his tribe to work with him. By the way, “lack of knowledge is a disease.”

Mr. Supporter of SSLA, while it is true our people are struggling at this time due to lack of services caused primarily by the northern sudan oppressions since the so called in dependence of 1956, yet that does not prevent the our baby country from giving hand of support to our African rothers and sisters of the Nuba Mountains. South sudan is fertile land and until UNHCR gives support to those brothers and sisters, they will survie the same way we have been surving in the south without any government help.

Southerners whether in Upper Nile, Equatoria or Bahr El Ghazal haven’t been given handouts by any government even that of north sudan. That is, our people whether being it southerners or Nudas are used to strugling for themselves. What they need more importantly is their lives safety while food is a secondary concern and I am sure you will agree with me in this regard.

Brothers and sisters of the great Nuba Mountains, you are welcome to your people and whatever your brothers and sisters eat in Unity State being it any food, grass, fish or while fruits, they will share with you no doubt about that. I know you are great people and I have personally lived in the Nuba Mountains, Starting from Kadugli, Daleng, Buram, Lagowa, Thorogi, Mirri Bara and Mirri Juwa as well as Agolo.

I know what you mean you mean that Naath Nuer do not like corruption that is why H.E Gatdet Yaka was trying to fight. Naath Nuer do not worry about losing highly position because they care more about freedom of everyone in South Sudan. for example, 3 millions was stolen by Pagan Amum and nobody talk about it even Kiir himself that is why H.E Gatdet and Gatluak Gai was fighting for.

Sorry to response to your comment late, anyway, I agree with you that we,can help them on humanitarian ground, not because we have enough for, ourselves but just to share with them the little we have, what I am rejecting here is the exploitation of the misery of those refugee for political consumption. What I don’t condone and categorically condemned is the hypocrisy of some of our leaders by taking about resettling the refugee from north sudan that is still accommodating not less than a million southern Sudanese internally displaced person. So, if we have enough to help the refugee with then why the government is unable to repatriate those IDPs for resettlement in our country. What about repatriation and resettlement of southern Sudanese refugee living in the neighboring countries?? Let our charity start right from our home, otherwise helping others people while our own people are going without any food, shelter and clean drinkable water. So, if we can’t look after our people isn’t hypocrisy from our so-called southern Sudanese politicians?
