AU postpones South Sudan flag-raising ceremony

August 10, 2011 (ADDIS ABABA) – The AU on Wednesday cancelled a flag-raising ceremony for South Sudan after AU chief, Jean Ping, who has been outside Ethiopia, was unable to attend the occasion, the Government of South Sudan (GoSS) mission in Addis Ababa has announced.

David Dang Kong, deputy head of mission in the government of Southern Sudan mission Office confirmed the delay to Sudan Tribune.

“The raising of the flag will take place at AU head quarters in Addis Ababa next Monday. All AU member states including the head of states will attend the ceremony”

South Sudan officially proclaimed its independence on 9 July, and was recognised by the UN on 15 July, as the 194th member state after the general assembly unanimously voted in their favour.

The AU admitted South Sudan as its new member on 27 July.

The South Sudanese official said the event will mark a historic transition for all the people ofSouth Sudan who has went through decades of difficulties.

“Raising South Sudan flag in AU will be a wonderful day and this is the day the people of Southern Sudan has been waiting for almost 50 years” He said adding “this day will indicate that the people of South Sudan are free at last”

A high level delegations including ministers of South Sudan will gather in Addis Ababa to attend the ceremony.

    He did it purposely,because he has been working against the separation of greater sudan.
    No problem,we are already recognized by UN anyway.

    This so called Ping done it intensionally coz he was the first to be against South Sudan separation , he even reach to the extend of being El Basher Adviser against us.
    But we are free at last ya Ping and remember what God has put on his hands to be nobody can change it so is now your turn either throw yourself to the Tana lake or leave that office.

    I said it here last time, this man called ping or pinging is dragging his feet because he was opposed to our successful secession. he was a best friend to Beshir because they used to pay him to defend Beshir against the ICC.

    I hate him.

    Why was the secretary of the AU absent when he knows foresure, wensday was the officially lebaled and annoited as dayf or raising of the flag of the Republic of South Sudan at the at the AU in Addisa Ababa. maybe Jean Ping is still pursuing or maintaining his usual refusal of South sudan becoming a sovereign states as he did openly four years ago when he publicly announced that it would become a ghost state let alone fail state. that’s why now he decided to take personal trip rather than attending South Sudan flag raising.
