Sudanese Islamist leader describes a racist Bashir

August 14, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – A former ally of Sudanese president Omer Hassan al-Bashir disclosed what he claimed to be a racist aspect of the country’s leader who came to power in a bloodless coup more than twenty years ago.

Islamist opposition leader Hassan al-Turabi of the Popular Congress Party (PCP) speaks during a news conference after his visit to Egypt, at the party’s headquarters in Khartoum July 30, 2011 (Reuters)
“Bashir is a dictator and he was all the time in favor separating the South [from the North] to focus on suppressing the people of Northern Sudan [who are] demanding freedoms,” leader of the Popular Congress Party (PCP) Hassan al-Turabi was quoted as saying by the Cairo-based Al-Shurooq newspaper in an interview published today.

“He is also a racist [who] called the Southerners slaves. Even his [former] minister for several years Ali al-Hajj who is a doctor from far west Sudan, Bashir used to call him called ‘al-feraik’ meaning a small slave as a word of contempt” he added.

Turabi was Bashir’s close political and religious ally since the 1989 coup that was planned by the National Islamic Front (NIF) he led at the time.

However, both men fell out together in a bitter power struggle that started in 1999. Since then Turabi has been in and out of jail but was released along with all other political prisoners after a north-south peace deal in 2005.

The Islamist leader has been an outspoken critic of Bashir and his government. He is been accused by Khartoum of being the figure behind the Darfur Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) that has been fighting the central government since 2003.

“He [Bashir] is also primitive meaning narrow-minded who sees nothing but his clan. He even asked [Al- Qaeda leader Osama] bin Laden when he came to Sudan to finish a paved road to his village north of Khartoum which was completed only after we asked that it reaches the country’s only port in Port Sudan” Turabi said.

Turabi further said that one of Bashir’s problems is that he is backed by his army which resented the war in the the South that lasted for over two decades.

“So it was easy for them to get rid of the south .. This is the politics that created a deadlock for Bashir in the 90’s so he was forced to recruit young men. I used to tell them [youngsters militias] in lectures at their camps do not be like the soldiers who are killing, raping and looting. This is the [army’s] attitude everywhere in the world. Be different, do not kill peaceful [people] and if you see [someone] hungry feed him from your supplies,” the PCP leader said.

This is not the first time Turabi points fingers at Bashir accusing him of making derogatory remarks against other ethnicities.

Last year Turabi said that Bashir questioned whether rape of Darfuri women s a crime that should be punished during his meeting with the national commission of inquiry established in 2004 to investigate alleged right abuses in Darfur.

“One senior [member] from the commission, without naming him, said after we were sworn in [before Bashir] we sat down with the person that we took the oath before him, you know who is,” he added.

“He [Bashir] told us, [if] this Gharbawia [Darfuri woman], when a Ja’ali [man from the Ja’al tribe] man humps her, is this an honor or rape?”

The commission member according to the Turabi told him that “his hair stood on end” when he heard Bashir’s comment and was speechless.

“I swear to you in the name of god this story was told to me [by someone] I know very well” Turabi said.

The Sudanese president in May 2004 issued a decree establishing the National Commission of Inquiry in Darfur chaired by Dafa Allah Elhadj Yousuf who is a longtime and close friend of Turabi. It was mandated with collecting information on alleged violations of human rights in the restive region.

The Sudanese government at the time refused to comment on Turabi’s sensitive allegations which he made publicly.

In 2008 seven people were killed and 107 were wounded in clashes between members of the Hausa tribe and Sudanese authorities in different parts of the country after a newspaper attributed a statement to Bashir in which he described them as “foreigners with no presence in the country” in light of their Nigerian origins.

Bashir rushed to meet with Hausa leaders and swore to them that what was published in the interview was not true. At the time ruling party officials accused Turabi’s party of standing behind the riots.

The Sudanese president faces ten counts by the International Criminal Court (ICC) of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide that he is accused of orchestrating in Darfur against the Fur, Masaalit and Zaghawa African ethnic groups.

Sudan does not recognize the court and calls it a Western plot to isolate and fragment the country. Bashir has received strong backing from African nations against the Hague-based court.

Al Bashir had been a racist all along since 1989; did Al Turabi just discover Al Bashir racism today?

Al Turabi is another incredible idiot who had participated majorly in the destruction of Sudan through his shallowly though-through Islamic civilization project of the whole Sudan.

    Pathetic creature!

    Dear African Sudanese

Bashir is no different to most of the northern commentators you get on this website, they pretend to wish you well with their patronizing tone but if you read between the lines, they almost always attempt to devalue your worth as Humans.

Its very sad in this day and age but its true, even the educated average northerner of Arabic decent will harbor similar view points unless they were raised in a good family with moral values rather than cast system indoctrination.

And what’s really funny is when some of them come on here and blame everything on the imperialist Whiteman as if they are any better.

Bashir is the pharoah of Sudan whom God used to let South Sudan go free like the Israelites from Egypt at that time.

After the fierce battles between Bashir and Riek Machar in Mayom, Unity state, in 1986, during which Bashir’s leg was wounded by Riek Machar’s forces, he promised Riek Machar on the radio communication that if he would ever get closer to Sudan’s power center, he would let the South go free. At that time he was a Brigadier General in charge of the SAF division in Unity state.

Three years later, Bashir surprisingly took over power in Khartoum and in 1997 signed the Khartoum Peace Agreement (KPA) with Riek Machar on the basis of letting the South go free.

Though he faced alot of resistance from anti-self-determination Jallaba leaders including Al-Turaba, and coupled with the refusal by John Garang to join the peace process, and which led to the difficulty to implement the 1997 peace agreement, Bashir was told by Riek to bring John Garang first so that all the factions joined the peace process on self-determination.

In 2005 Bashir again signed the revived KPA in form of CPA, now John Garang included.

Bashir negotiated the implementation of it with Riek Machar who led the SPLM team.

Bashir also allowed the referendum to take place as he promised Riek Machar in 1986.

In January the referendum was conducted and Bashir accepted the results.

On 9th July 2011, Bashir also was the first world leader to recognize the independence of South Sudan.

I thank Bashir for keeping his promise of 1986 before he even became the President of the Sudan.

Now that hyenas of Al-Turabi are crying foul. They didn’t expect South Sudan to be free at last.

Sorry, the one hand vote as prophesied by Ngundeng was not an accident, but a known result of the champion of self-determination.

Thank you Bashir a thousand times for keeping your 1986/1997 promises.

    YO! Gatwech Tut aka”MI Diit”

Don’t fabricate History “with an H” It seems you are making some insinuation and cynical moves to coined your own version of History of Sudan. You cannot invent History out of the blue sky, but you can recount the History as it folds without bias or prejudice views. Further, we don’t make History. We make events, but History makes us out of those events. So, do not fabricate History again…

Telling about the facts of what happened is what we called history. Or how do you make your history?

Those things happened at their times and that is history.

Sorry if such facts hurt you.

Amazingly, criminals are now having some hot talk, after, what?
Mr Hassan al-Turabi of the Popular Congress Party is no different from Omar, so he better stop lying to the people of North, all this was his plan however, things run out of his control when Bashir finally realised he was being used by Mr Alturabi and that was the real reason Bashir caught him and put him in ongoing house arrest for several years.
South Sudan issue is not just started when Bashir came to the leadership in Sudan in fact all the leaders of North were having similarity attitude toward Southerners. They valued them as “No human ” and that why South Sudan stood up for what you have finally seen to day “a new Nation in heart of Africa.
So Mr Turabi is trying to build another empire against the people of “Shimaalia” and definitely he is aiming to take over the government of North Sudan as he attempted back to 1997 when he tried hard to get rid of Bashir in order to establish Islamic Kingdom in Sudan with his hope to become the King similar to King Abdala Alsuodi, at that time if there were no man from South called George Kongor Arob, Omar AL Bashir would have been finished by a plan set from Mr Hassan Alturabi.
So Mr Alturabi will correct this if I am wrong, he used to encourage the “MUJAHIDIIN” killers by instructing them to kill in order to go to paradise. He himself stated afterward when he got caught by Bashir that “who ever go and fight in South Sudan, if he/she got kill he will not go to paradise , because he is a thief” well now how would he say that he is better than Bashir , I believe they both the same, my suggestion to our brothers and sisters of North Sudan , ‘ the time is belong to citizen to have a say, don’t listen no more to those liars/killers , they have invented a chronic disease in Sudan and already South has left , and we will soon see Blue Nile and Nuba mountain on the way too. So Northern Citizen should stand up now and clean this mass.

    Iam so surprised.

    Logik,

All Sudanese are africans and none of them denies that fact, whether they have arab affiliation and use them to degrade others is another story.

Yes, old school northerners like to live in a world were they are the best and fool themselves they are better than abid, halab and even better than arabs or any body who is different from them. In this doctrine you are talking about, labeling a person an arab also harbours a certain degree of insult.

Anyways, this type of negative behaviours are in rapid decline in the modern northern society despite the superiority complex of our leaders. So please don’t judge a whole nation by your inherited hatful attitude esspecially when northerners are improving in that domain (depite their leaders) and please understand that this is a process and you also have a part in it (clean your hearts from hate) because your hate is a huge barrier between us (improve your self before asking others for improvements).

Remember, we are all africans and humans like the idea of feeling better than others, this is just human nature and this can only be controlled by education an enlightenment. Similar types of attitude can be found in any society in the world, including south sudan.

    Peace.

    Gatwech Tut Aka Mi Diit,

History have sources! What sources have you used for those FACTS. You cannot just make history without sources. History is about documented and reliable sources. What you called facts did not hurt me, but it hurts History itself and you should be ashamed of that. Again, your “history” is bias and backward.
