Unity state woman claims to be raped by four men in military uniforms
August 19, 2011 (BENTIU) – A 40-year old woman has claimed she was raped by three men wearing military uniforms and another in a police uniform in Rubkotna County of Unity state on Thursday night.
Baleany Lokerekni Ding told Sudan Tribune that each man raped her up to three time in an area behind the CARE International Compound in Rubkotna. She said that she cried for help but no one came to her rescue.
After the attack Ding went to Rubkotna police station to report the case. She was then taken to hospital to see if she had contracted any sexually transmitted diseases and to investigate pain in her abdomen.
Ding explained that she had been walking to attend her relative’s funeral when four men stopped her at gun point and taped up her mouth. “Each man repeated [the rape] over three times,” she said.
Bentiu town chief Juoy Machar Turoal said that the uniforms indicated the men may be part of South Sudan’s army (SPLA) and police force. He said that people in uniform should be there to protect civilians not commit crimes against them.
Turoal expressed hope that the guilty men would be caught and sent to prison for what he described as a “violation of humanity”. He added that the Rubkotna administration should be asked to investigate the case and should make sure that those culprits are brought to justice.
The Rubkotna police told Sudan Tribune said they are investigating the incident but could not comment further at this time, as the culprits had not yet been identified.
Ding’s family tried to persuade her not to make her identity known after she was raped but she insisted that it would encourage other women to come forward if they are attacked and to show men that they cannot get away with abusing women.
She further added that, “we thought our police and military are protective to us but we failed to understand why they are against the citizens”.

this is unspeakable action against this innocent citizen who was trying to pay respect for her dead relative.but i don’t understand why did these shameless thugs did this to her.I personally would aurge the local police to show their expertise in identifying these individuals and held them accountable for their action.And on top this south sudan government need to turn their focus on training the the police and equippment them with modernizes apparatus.this will help them in doing their job effectively.

SPLA/M members should account for their crime. Where there SPLA there is war crime raping umbush people, now they put their dead leader’s head on every money of south Sudan like he was a king of Dinka, they should put it on 100 or 50 bill but luck of leadership they didn’t know what to do.
