Northern opposition party inks memo with South Sudan

August 28, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s opposition National Umma Party (NUP) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Republic of South Sudan (RSS) on ways to address “potential crises” in the rump of Sudan, a move likely to rile the ruling party in Khartoum.

South Sudan broke away from Sudan and declared independence on 9 July in line with the region’s vote on independence held at the start of this year. However, the new neighbors are already squabbling over a wide array of issues including oil shares and conflicts along shared border areas.

A delegation of the NUP led by the party’s chairman and Sudan’s former Prime Minister, Al-Sadiq al-Mahdi, on Sunday visited South Sudan’s Juba and held a meeting with the President of the Republic of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, and the minister of cabinet affairs, Deng Alor.

The two sides issued a joint communiqué inked by Sarah Nugud Allah on behalf of the NUP and Deng Alor on behalf of the South Sudan government.

The communiqué recounted that the meeting had tackled a number of issues, including the explosive situation along the borders, particularly in South Kordofan state, Abyei and Blue Nile State, as well as the U.S. economic sanctions on Sudan, oil shares, pastors and what it termed as the “cold war” between the two countries.

Sudan and RSS have been at loggerheads over the status of Abyei area which is claimed by both sides. Tension increased over the fighting in Sudan’s state of South Kordofan between the country’s army and rebel fighters previously aligned with South Sudan.

After a lengthy discussion, the joint communiqué said, the two sides agreed on a number of principles to contain potential crisis in Sudan given the mutually destructive nature of instability on both sides.

The two sides agreed to convene a comprehensive conference to be attended by all political forces and tackle Sudan crises as a whole. Furthermore, the two sides called for an international conference to support efforts for national reconciliation in Sudan.

Also, the communiqué called for granting dual citizenship to Sudanese people in the north and the south and the establishment of a four freedom agreement between the two countries.

It is expected that this move will unnerve the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) which has always been anxious at any sign of rapprochement between northern political forces and South Sudan.

The NCP has been engaged in dialogue with the NUP over tension in the domestic political arena but the talks are yet to yield results amid reports that the NCP continues to resist offering meaningful concessions.

oh God! Arabs are coming back againg to South Sudan. They come as a traders before and after they get settle with such relationships then exploitation of people will follow. The government for the republic of south sudan should learn from the past experience and they should not involve or sign any treaty/agreement with the opposition party in Khartoum like NUP. Such parties in Khartoum has nothing to do with the current situation for both Sudan and the Republic and of South Sudn.

    Dear readers
i would like to give an appreciation on MOU between (RSS) and (NUP).i hope it was done in good faith by both parties.on other hand, NCP will not sleep.they will continue to destabilize South Sudan. if all northern oppositions were united, regime change in the north Sudan is the only solution to bring stability to both countries.
Second to our brothers in north who are suffering internally from NCP regime, time is running out.go to the street and demand for your right.Gaddafi is gone and the next is Al Bashier

    Mr. Abraham Ayom,
You know what South Sudan Government is going back to square one. Arabs are seen as second god and they will find a way to take us back as a united Sudan. There is no reason for signing agreements with any party from the North whose manifestos have element of Sharia law. Sadique El Mohadi himself did not solve South Sudanese Problems Why now?

Not having arabs in our Territory alone, just think of recolonization of the whole of Africa. The Country that will remain safe and shall never, never be colonized is Ethiopia. The rest shall suffer recolonization and shall never, never freed themselves from powerful invadors. What will bring recolonization is greed for power, backstabbing, jealousy, hatred, expolitations and all forms of mistreatment that we are doing now and shall do our fellow citizens.

South Sudan leadership shall continue be brain feed with tactics approach to disrupt the future vision of coming generation.

This type of officials should first consult the youth before signing any treaty or agreement with any party from the North or from the Arab nation.

We are tired of all these. Let the outstanding issues be dealt with presence of the International community because, the matter has gone out of hands.

The NUP failed to address these issues when the South was wrastling with NCP to accompalish the tentacle issues contained in the CPA so what makes them think that the South will close their eyes to let them(NUP)pass through and begin islamizing the South and introduce another law here?
What is important to be discuss with them after gaining independence? Go to Khartoum… Salva should keep an eye but not to yes, yes them.

    Readers,

I just can not understand how on Earth exactly Kiir want from Arabs. Arabs are the same whether they are in leadership or opposition. Kiir should understand that NUGUD and SADDIQ were there leading when we formed the rebellion in 1983. Basher will be better off than NUGUD and SADDIQ.

Relax guys. This is politics in action.
Only the foolish will allow themselves to be cheated more than once.

The truth of the matter is we are neighbours and should live as good neighbours. Therefore, any efforts aimed at improving our neighbourliness should be welcomed.

We should learn to forgive but not forget. Thus, don’t forget history.

A peaceful and democratic Sudan is very good for the Republic of South Sudan stability.

    Dut,

Politics is not wishful thinking! Who will go out to the street for the sake of an over 75 years senile politician whose only dream is that his daughter and sons will inherit his throne!

Only morons will do that! Actually I can see them happy meeting him!

You are absolutely almost 100% right brother, making concession is essential, the communique signed by our leaders is part of a game and if you need to know the rules of how to play the game, first you need to understand the norms so that people will play it with you.

But if you wish to win the game you may need to understand and be in control of the principles of the game. Therefore, let’s not doubt of this document, we all understood that an Arab is an Arab. NUP knows why they decided to come to South Sudan at this time, they found nowhere in this planet like South Sudan and all of those parties will follow the same route. let’s not discourage them, this is a credit to South as well as international communities.

    What is in Kiir’s mind?!?!

Well, I am confused by the decisions that a young country South Sudan’s Leader is taking…..Why is president Kiir not concentrating on the internal problems first before heading back to pay attention to Northern opposition party’s nonsenses? If the points of their party meets people’s need, why are they not represented in Bahsir’s government instead they always go behind bars….there is no way that Sadiq El Mahdi (formerly South Sudanese prosecutor) talk of public relations..NO WAY!!

I would advise Kiir if the advisers are not doing their job to at least seek help/solution to social, economical and political matters else where not in Northern Sudan anymore…OR….Kiir is not yet forgiven by many Southerners by selling 48% of oil in June to cover his personal expenditures in July to Northerners. Be warned that you are not Southern Sudan but just selected by your own people to lead and now you wanted to betray them. LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION please!!!!

I am becoming bitter because things are not going well the way a new born country start….we are not sleeping, we need a change not only in development but in the ways of thinking.
