Al-Beshir to lead Sudanese delegation to COMESA summit in Kampala

KHARTOUM, June 01, 2004 (SUNA) — President of the Republic General Omar al-Beshir will lead Sudan delegation for the summit of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), scheduled to be held in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, on 8 June.

The minister of foreign affairs, Dr Mustafa Osman Ismail, said in a press statement that Sudan will participate in the COMESA summit on its capacity as the chairman of the current session and a founding member of the organization.

He indicated that President Omar al-Beshir will present a report at the summit on the achievements of COMESA in the past session, explaining that this report will touch on latest developments in Sudan in the peace, foreign policy and the economic domains.

Dr Ismail said that President Al-Beshir will meet on the sidelines of the summit with a number of heads of state and governments, saying that he will acquaint them with the latest developments in the peace process in Sudan.

Dr Ismail explained that the COMESA summit will be preceded by a meeting of its ministerial council, which will discuss issues of peace and security in the member states.

SUNA learned the ministers of foreign trade in the COMESA member states will meet before the summit to review commercial issues of common concern and ways to implement COMESA agreement.
