September 12, 2011 (LONDON) – Sudanese security have arrested 317 Eritrean refugees attempting to cross the border to Egypt.
Sudanese police, according to reports, stated that 75 women and four children were detained, 30 km from the Egyptian border.
After the secession of South Sudan in July 2011, North Sudan implemented a new citizenship law, which Eritrean’s feared would make their lives more difficult.
A recent Human Rights Watch report stated “many Eritreans conclude that they can avoid oppression only by fleeing the country at risk to their lives “ as they suffer arbitrary arrest, torture and forced labour.
