South Sudan officials accuse their boss of corruption

September 14, 2011 (JUBA) – Senior officials of the South Sudan’s Public Grievance Chamber have accused their chairperson of corruption and asked the leadership to seriously look into the matter.

In a letter addressed to the Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan, Riek Machar Teny, the senior officials of the Chamber including the deputy chairperson, Mohamed Marjan and Alphonse Akol Thiik and Achol Toch Nhial accused the chairperson, Deng Dongrin, of bad management and financial malpractice.

In the complaint published on Tuesday by The Citizen newspaper, the officials alleged that the chairperson has been diverting a large portion of the Chamber’s budget to his individual office services and has been denying the rest of senior officials their claims.

They also added that he has been taking at least 40% of the fuel provided for Chamber operations to his own house, adding that the chairperson alone has allocated himself three cars while the rest of the staff have only two in the institution.

The sources further claimed that the actions of their chairperson has paralyzed the duties of the staff and appealed to the leadership to take swift action to resolve the matter otherwise they warned that they may be forced to take the issue directly to the anti-corruption commission.

The Public Grievance Chamber is an independent institution of the government formed five years ago to oversee general grievances of South Sudan institutions, but has now been affected by its own crisis of the alleged mismanagement of funds.
South Sudan has been struggling in vain to minimize if not eradicate corruption in the government as well as in private institutions.

Over one thousand cases are believed to be sitting in the office of the anti corruption chairperson awaiting investigations and prosecution of the culprits that would be found guilty.

    There you go! Public Grievances? to do what and has been doing what? public funds should not be wasted in supporting institutions which are idle and redundance.

    But again, what about anti-corruption commission, Trade Unions and other relevant unions in the South? don’t you think there is an overlapse in this institutions? I am afraid that I may go far.

    what is the work of public Grievance Chamber? and what is the work of Anti-Corruption Commission or is called Pro-Corruption Commission? why should the letter be addressed to the VP and not Anti-corruption commission? this is nonsense of condoning criminals and sharing with them.
    Simply weed the corruptees out!

    Mr. Space;
    Your questions are in their place. Who is Public Grievances Chamber? Is it not the same with Justice Employee Chamber? Is there difference between Anti-Corruption Commission in terms of their fuction or TORs? Was it not the Accommodation Policy in the SPLM that is source and mother of corruption? To me there is nothing called Public Grievances Chamber. It is we who are the Public Grievances Chamber and our resources are misused by the Chairpersons, Undersecretaries, Director Generals and Ministers etc. We are the one to complain about such. Youth are the one to complain because of no jobs for them. But who is going to listen to our Grievances that we are posting?

    Now, it is not that Chamber alone. All Commissions and Ministries are practising this kind of mismanagement of resources. No Service delievery at all. Our President is lying to us that he would eradicate Corruption. How will he eradicate corruption when he is not ensuring control of resources. To Eradicate Corruption let all the minsiters and MPs including HIM the president bring back home their families from abroad. If they want their children to have better education let them hire qualified teachers from foreign countries and pay them huge amount so that in other way our Children may benefit indirectly from corrupt officials. Right now nobody from the Government top officials is free from the disease.

    There is no any goverment official in the republic of southern sudan who is free of corruption.the accusation only comes in ,when the other one had the upper hand in corruption like the case in this article,otherwise corruption is not something secrete in Juba.i will rather advise the man to come up with counter accusation in order to clear his name simply.

    @South Sudan Grievance Chamber,

    Corruption is addicted to all Southerners official even if you are the chairperson of public grievances chamber,who will waste his/her time to come if he/she feel annoyed with his/her employer since the very person who is heading Grievances Chamber is caught red handed with emblezzling public funds.

    Shame on You Deng Dongrin for massive corruption of emblezzling public assets for allocating three vehicles for yourselves and taking always 40% of fuel for your own usage and some other unaccountable issues which are accompanied corruption.

    I totally agreed with his subordinates to sue him to the court not to the anti corruption commission, Anti corruption commission is likely to be sue very soon by his subordinates.

    South Sudan will be the most corrupt state in Africa.

    Every politician in this government is corrupt, until he is caught. When a corrupt individual, as “Deng Dongrin” who was caught red handed stealing public money in regular basis, his punishment should be sever and he should be doing jail time, if convicted, so that others will be deterred.”Deng Dongrin”, who is unfit for his job, because he is a THIEF, should be charged with treason, then face trial. I am deeply saddened, that “Deng Dongrin” has actually made a bad name for himself, his people and for his boss who happend to be a DINKA. This incident is without doubt, the biggest test for president Salva Kiir Mayardit accountability, in fighting corruption within his hand-picked cabinet.
