Opposition SPLM-DC names new Secretary General

September 21, 2011 (JUBA) — The Sudan People’s liberation Movement for Democratic change (SPLM-DC), the official opposition party in the newly-independent country of South Sudan, has appointed Sisto Olur Erista as the new interim Secretary General replacing Sandra Bona Malwal.

Malwal resigned from her position on Friday 16, saying she was a single parent and needed to spend more time with her children and focus on gender issues. Other officials including the secretary for finance, and secretary for populace and syndicated organisation also resigned.

Reacting to the resignation of the three senior officials, Lam Akol, chairman of the SPLM-DC, in a statement extended to Sudan Tribune on 19 September stating that he has appointed Sisto Olur as interim Secretary General after consultation with his two deputies.

The statement accused the SPLM-DC’s former Secretary General and the former the secretary for administration and finance of withdrawing 13,800 South Sudanese pounds ($5,160) from the party’s account prior to announcing their defection.

In June 2009 the SPLM-DC split from the ruling SPLM, the former rebel group, which has governed South Sudan since a 2005 peace deal. In July of this yeay South Sudan became independent.

The SPLM-DC also refuted remarks that the party lacked transparency or collaborated with armed militia and challenged its former members to produce evidence in court of their claims.

“Right from the formation of the party, the SPLM has been accusing [SPLM-DC] of sponsoring militia, an allegation we have consistently rejected. And when our party was banned to operate in south Sudan in 2009, we took the matter to the constitutional court and no evidence to the claim was produced for the court. That was why we won the case. These allegations continued with all kinds of freaks and charlatans being played on the television but nothing concrete were produced to prove the case”, reads the statement.

The statement further challenged the former members to substantiate their allegations as they were holding high positions within the party prior to their defection.

“To have credibility in the eyes of the people of south Sudanese, the defectors must produce insiders’ evidence to their allegations of sponsoring militias, since they held high offices in SPLM-DC and were running the day to day affairs of the party”, the statement adds.

Yien Thiang Luong, the SPLM-DC’s former secretary for populace and syndicate organization who defected from the party, told Sudan Tribune that party chairman Lam Akol lacked transparency.

“We call upon our supporters in the party to abandon the SPLM-DC and to join the struggle of the people of the Republic of South Sudan against disease, poverty and underdevelopment, and usher a sustained economic prosperity, peace and unity of our beloved people.”

The defection of the three senior members with 523 other member is believed to second biggest defection the party has ever experienced since it established on 6 June 2009.

Last year Charles Barnaba Kisanga, the first Secretary General of the SPLM-DC resigned taking with him an estimated over 5,000 members, accusing the party leader of corruption, lack of transparency and involvement with paramilitaries.

Lam Akol should give up politics and go home. In addition, those who have joined his pathetic party are like him.

Anyway, that money belong to the people of South Sudan which came from the Oil stolen by NIF genocidal leaders and should be reclaimed by SSLA and put into the development fund.

I think the South Sudan Police and security organs have a job to do to ensure that Lam Akol’s link with NIF, Hezbollah and HAMAS is watched closely.

    Dakkin,

Does Awut Deng comes from SPLM-DC?
    You must be kidding.

Lam Akol is a confused man. He should leave his dirty politics or else change his nationality to be Northern Sudanese and join his friend Omar Bashir.

Dr.Lam Akol should only be president of his family in Malakal because I don’t see any reason for some one who has been working against the interest of the people of South Sudan for many years to be the president of the Republic of South Sudan.

He is a traitor, arrogant, not ashamed of his deeds and doesn’t want to apologize to the people of South Sudan so that he is forgiven and absorbed into the society.

Shame on you Lam for you can’t rule people like us any more, the you that you will claim to be the president in one way or the other, I will be the first person to fire my bullet against your regime, I swear you not enjoy it.

If Sudantriune could deliver my questions to Dr. Lam Akol that would be great.

I want to ask Dr. Lam Akol the following questions:
-Are you really a politician of the South Sudan?
-Are you really a citizen of South Sudan by birth or naturality?
-Are you making refutation of accussation in the South Sudan or outside South Sudan?
-Is your party well convienced that you shall exercise your politics to the South Sudanese through media statements?
-Were you presence during during the Independent day of South Sudan?
-Where do you get this money the defectors withdraw from your party account?
-What prove you that you are not an enemy of South Sudanese, please give us an account of your achievements?
-What do you want to change in the SPLM which you did not change when you joined the NIF/NCP in 1991?

    Dear Friends,
At least today, we have spoken with one voice, that is in condemnation of traitor Lam Akol AJawin. In any case, SPLM-DC will never change anything in South Sudan because the followers are only confined in Upper Nile state where the Chairperson comes from. It is a party of the people and does not reflect the will of the people of the Republic of South Sudan. Nobody hates having many focused parties, but should a party be formed against its people, then, it is not needed.

It is that hopeless, senseless, idiot, barbaric, dumb and crazy Dakkin who is trying to confuse Mighty people of South Sudan. How could a sensible person relate things in useless manner like this? Awut Deng Achuil is not mentioned here. Why do you mention her?
Join Lam and his allies and he will make you his third
    deputy.

    Mr. Wacjac,

You are wrong! We are not speaking in one voice. If SPLM-DC was synonymous to Lam Akol, why were these defectors there in the first place? If Lam Akol is STILL a traitor, what would his agenda be ( fight to re-unite South Sudan and Sudan)? If SPLM is now in charge of our country, what can Lam Akol (the traitor) do?

Please take a moment, ask yourself the above questions and listen to yourself if you make sense at all.

I’m sure you’ll start preaching how much SPLM you are or how much South Sudan you have at heart. Tell you what, I’m all these but don’t hate Lam Akol that much.

Be objective but not subject and grow up!

When I form another political party and name it South Sudan Forum for Democratic Change (SSFDC), they say you are sent by the Arabs or you have that mentality of Lam Akol and I may be call names. So does it mean South Sudan will be administered with a single party system? Please guyz, let us be rational in thinking. Even though Lam has his own weaknesses which I bekieve every one on this planet does, that does not mean he is all weak. Our history of this country will be written and even others try to twist it everything is on record. In real and contemporary politics, there is no permanent enemy and there is always marriage of convinience. That means in sensible politic, we consider party programs and work with it. Most of our youth have become more radicle than nationalists, they have embrace tribes more than South Sudan.

Dr.Lam Akol and Dr. Riek Machar are the proud citizens of south Sudan becoz they championed for the southerners’ right to self-determination opposed to the failed vision of Dr.John Garang which has just been accomplished. they deserve MORE SPACE in south Sudan than any other folk.they followed the foots of ANYA NYA Movements,Torit Mutiny/rebellion of independent South Sudan till its success. any rag tag cockroaches should not utter any nosense about these gentlemen. we need opposition party in south Sudan and SPLM-DC is the only viable party available.the government without an opposition party is incomplete and useless. in true democracy opposition figures should not be threatened or assassinated.it is undemocratic unpatriotic to do so.and if for instant Dr.Lam Akol is assassinated because of his stance to bring democratic change, more chaos may ensue and he will be crowned as a HERO and the names of former heros will be deleted. we should respect opposition parties no matter how nagging they are in their activities.and stop manufacturing fabrications that even a small child can just laugh at it.let us grow!
