More than 200 trucks stranded on Wulu-Mvolo road, S. Sudan

October 06, 2011 (JUBA) – Over 250 commercial trucks loaded with food are stranded between Wulu county, Lakes state and Mvolo county, Western Equatoria state due to the poor condition of the road.

A Ugandan driver at the scene, transporting goods from Kampla, said the trucks had spent eight days unable to move, explaining that the number of potholes in the road “cannot be counted”.

He said that the drivers want to know why the government has not solved this ongoing problem.

It is claimed that some of thhe drivers are suffering from malaria, hunger and many of them are drinking dirty water from a found nearby pool.

The driver was also critical of members of the South Sudan army who erect road blocks to extract taxes from the drivers, when the condition of the roads continues to deteriorate.

The road from Juba, the South Sudan capital, to Nimule, near the Ugandan border, is being resurfaced with US funding – the drivers are asking for the same to be done with the Lakes state road.

Wulu county administrator, Salah Idris Sendria Agrar, said that the government of Lakes state lacks the equipment necessary to repair Wulu road but that the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have agreed to repair the road within seven days.

Idris said the governor of Lakes state, Chol Tong Mayay, visited the site then went to consult UNMISS.

South Sudan currently has less than 40 miles of paved roads, making transportation problematic. This is affecting the price of goods as in many cases, they are flown in.

With South Sudan still less than three months old, there are many infrastructural challenges to be meet.

In this case, our government need to acknowledge the important of road. This is unbecoming condition, the whole states are facing food shortages. It is also advisable that the gov’t need to construct roads[ highways ] connection states and international countries we trade with.

How can the government bring about or deliver services to its citizens when the very means of transport is indeed lacking.

Unfortunately though, these drivers aren’t aware of how our government makes its priorities.

At the moment RSS’s priority is to relocate the capital to Ramciel deep in the swamps, and obviously NOT any roads to Lakes or Jonglei States.

Next time driving to Ramciel or from it to other parts of its vast swampy neughbouring towns will even be tougher. This is the RSS suffering under the “13 Aliba

It is really very challenging for RSS government especially the lack of an acessibility to link business goods to reach people that are badly affected by stravation.I thought our govrt would put construction of infrustracture as it first priority as the country is landlock. The RSS leadership should that citizens come first follow by luxury Govrt offices. Otherwise not all got access by air.
