South Sudan speaker meets Ugandan president

October 10, 2011 (KAMPALA) – South Sudan’s national parliament speaker, James Wani Igga, held mututal interest talks with Uganda president, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Monday.

Wani was representing South Sudan at celebrations marking the 49th anniversary of Uganda independence in the northern town,Lira, on Sunday.

Uganda’s New Vision newspaper reported that speaker Wani met Museveni in Uganda’s State House describing the meeting as concerned with mutual interests.

On Sunday Museveni invited Wani to address the rally which was broadcast live on Uganda’s national TV.

Wani told the gathering that South Sudan is the process of joining the East Africa Community (EAC).

The debate of joining EAC is contentious in South Sudan as there are fears that an easier flow of human resources will make the job market less favourable to South Sudanese, many of whom have been affected directly or indirectly by more than two decades of civil war with North Sudan.

South Sudan imports nearly all foodstuffs from Uganda and Kenya.

Museveni’s human rights record is lamentable. Human Rights Watch has said nine people protesting in Kampala were killed by the police in May.

Joining EAC may indeed mean tough employment conditions for the unqualified and lazy south Sudanese who are unable to grow their own foods.

However this is an opprtunity for the nascent state to survive and develop.

You can’t enjoy their food and reject their company! Join, let them build you your new capital, after all they do everything in Juba and elsewhere, so why the BIG fuss now!

In facts, there is fear of national imbalance through employment opportunities just like any other country, South Sudan has a population that need to work and much of this is uneducated yet EA is educated and more developed. Joining East Africa is not profitable due to jobs related problems. I hope our govt will hold this issue in pending process and we shall officially join in next century. Thank

I don’t agree with the idea of joining the EAC now. ROSS is just a young Country not even a year old yet with no viable social services offered to our citizens and is already talking about joining EAC. Let our leaders first make sure that they provide basic and viable services to if not all at least 98% of the population and then after a period of 20 or 30 years, they can start debating about EAC!
