Deputy Minister in trouble after calling to remove SPLM officials

October 20, 2011 (JUBA) – A deputy minister in South Sudan, who called for the removal of five state chairpersons from South Sudan’s ruling party, has been accused of violating the party’s constitution by addressing party issues through the media, instead of directly petitioning the party’s secretary general.
The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) disapproval came in the wake of an open letter written by Salva Mathok Gengdit, the country’s deputy interior minister addressed to the SPLM Secretary General, Pagan Amum, which called for the removal of five current state chairpersons who are said to absent due to their various national obligations.
These include the minister for housing and physical planning, Jemma Nunu Kumba (Western Equatoria); deputy speaker of the national assembly, Daniel Awet Akot (Lakes); national assembly members, Mark Nyipoc (Western Bahr el Ghazal) and Joseph Munytil (Unity); and presidential advisor, Tor Deng Mawien (Warrap).
Gengdit, also a member of the SPLM national liberation council, alleges that the ruling party has become increasingly unpopular at a grass-roots level due to the “absence” of these five members.
“This gap is a concern as a member of the SPLM; our party has a good number of cadets committed to work as volunteers, if they are assigned to those posts. I advise for the removal of those comrades and call national liberation council to elect new members. Time is running out and we shouldn’t allow ourselves to be dismantled at grass-roots level,” Gengdit’s statement partly reads.
The liberation council is the party’s second highest decision-making body after the congress.
In an interview with Sudan Tribune the SPLM spokesman, Mathew Yien, said the party was strongly opposed to members electing to discuss internal party matters with the media or the public.
“The SPLM is a democratic party that allows its members to express their views without restraint, but for a senior member to use the media as a platform for addressing party matters is unconstitutional,” said Yien.
Yien explained that Mathok should have “directly written to the party’s secretary general, if he had urgent issues that needed attention, but not through the media.”
Neither the SPLM secretary general nor any high ranking party official has, hitherto, responded to the deputy interior minister’s open letter, which was published in Thursday’s issue of Citizen newspaper.

Gengdit is good to give advise in the right manner and to the correct forum. SPLM is a party with all the structures and hierarchy,Gengdit advise should have been discussed internally within the party. No need to make a dust out of small matter that can be tackle simply by SPLM administration. These members should not hold higher office in the state when they are absent through out.

Gengdit is not very wrong in what he has said,but if because of reporting over the media, he can be advise and forgiven.
Development which the youth are crying of are throught the participation of those ministers and Constitution holders.you can not be paid if your performance are bad.

I think Salva Mathok did what interested public and therefore public has rights to get that information through public arena like media.
Salva Mathok did what he had been elected for. Being minister of interior is not flat job, but technical skill because at end of day it is the minister who faces problems from public everyday before the case comes to parliamentary debate.

Names on Job, but physical active absentee is not what Southern Sudan needs to develop itself from long torn environment. We need to be serious enough and push ourselves on tip to focusing on the matter that are blocking our development. Also no need for two jobs for one person while others are drying over there.

Dear Lok, Its absolutely wrong in procedural for Gen. Mathok to address the media in matters pertaining to the well being of the party without the knowledge of the SPLM leadership. Affairs of the SPLM are to be handled by SPLM Secretariat internally, that why CDE. Pagan and the rest are there. this is a great disappointment of the party’s image. those of Mathok should forget such junta politics.

You might be rushed to correct my comment, but the point of why I wrote that comments was that Mathok Geng wrote “open letter to SPLM internal general Secretary Pagam A”. That opening lstter was evidence showing truth and fair views of SPLM party image.
For your info, Salva Mathok is along legend saving grace during our struggle and also in old Sudan Public office than others

I would like to say, he is 100 per cent right,its time to tell the truth, if you don’t want the truth,then you are out ofyourmind and care of this country.if you watch how party has been run,it is not vital.

guys, we are all moved by issues camrade Salva Mathok raised of SPLM becoming unpopular. SPLM is not delivering services to the people, therefore is not winning hearts and minds of those who built party reputation. i think you all are entitle to your own opinons, but look here we are missing the big picture. SPLM is unwanted because generals including Gengdit corupted people’s resources.
