South Sudan opposition member remains in detention

By Ngor Arol Garang

October 24, 2011 (JUBA) -– The South Sudan main opposition party, Sudan People’s Liberation Movement for Democratic Change (SPLM-DC), said on Monday that one of its members remains in detention, despite attempts to secure his release on bail.

The leader of the South Sudan opposition at the Legislative Assembly, Onyoti Adigo, announced on Sunday that three of its members were arrested on Friday
by the security services.

Two were released immediately but one remains under detention prompting the opposition to claim that he was targeted. While the cause of his detention remains unclear, opposition figures in series of interviews with Sudan Tribune claim that the arrest was motivated by the publication of an article condemning the president of South Sudan, Salva Kiir.

James Okuk remains under detention. He has not been released […] because the authorities said they were evaluating prints of what he wrote in the internet,” said Adigo told Sudan Tribune on Monday.

Okuk has written various articles such as Confederation for South Sudan a betrayal to self-determination and South Sudan Paradox: Joyful Independence, Sorry Leadership!

“This is a just humiliation because you cannot arrest someone for more than 72 hours,” he said calling on government agents to “respect” the Transitional Constitution of South Sudan.

Adigo was amongst SPLM-DC members arrested in July.

Speaking to reporters at South Sudan National Assembly on Monday, James Deng a member of the house, said security organs need more training in order for them to execute their duties in line with the interim constitution.

He cited the recent demonstration in Western Bahr el Ghazal state in which some students were beaten as symptomatic of the problem.

“Among things which were amended in the current Transitional Constitution of South Sudan was to outlaw sections which were prohibiting people participating in peaceful demos, but we are still embracing these laws,” Deng said.

He said the Ministry Internal Affairs would investigate allegations made against the Police Force.

How Ghaddafi ended in utter humiliation, you will think twice to deprive people from practicing their right to opinions.

Watching Idi Amin Dada and Moouamar Ghaddafi on the You Tube. Amin had to run for his life and died as a forgotten man in exile, while Ghaddafi was brought out of a sewage pipe, paraded and reduced to a “rat”, before they killed him.

    Dictators do not understand History.

I really came to understand today that most of the commentators here in this website, might be kids or SPLM loyalish. You can’t protect or defend your party by giving a tick on the wrong practices of the party.SPLA is acting as if there is A state of emergency in the country. But what i want to know is that, the SSAF, security agents are in the service of the nation or SPLM party?

Mr. James Okuk who is highly critical of the government of Salva Kiir remains in custody without charge, awaiting the review of what he has written online. No one should be thrown in jail without being charge with an offense. A person should be entitled to a lawyer and a bail, our law makers should know better than that. Disagreement is not good enough to throw somebody behind bars.

Hello South Sudan. In my opinion, Okuk has really gone wild and there is a need to tame him so that he is suitable for domestic use in South Sudan. Being a doctor, we need his brain in reconstructution and development of South Sudan and Therefore , there is a need to make him a reasonable citizen. I advise the security organs to give him an effective treatment to save the dr.from this chronic dse.

First, of all Okuk is a liar and intellectually inferior, and he fail has a politician. Second, he/Lam Akol should be charge/in prison for the offense of attempting to overthrow the (ROSS) government and assisting its enemies during the war and even today. He has a history of denigrating leaders who fought, suffered during the war. The people of ROSS know the history of these individuals.Elijah

I don’t know why every one associated with Dr. Lam Akol is considered an enemy of state of south sudan?. Dr. Okuk is a southern sudanese who is concern about his own country and trying his best to rectify certain odds in the system but unfortunately he was taken to be an enemy, because certain individuals want things to continue in odds,so that they continue in their corruption.
