Protesting students clash with police in Sudan’s capital
October 24, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – University students in Sudan’s capital Khartoum clashed on Monday with police forces, eye witnesses told Sudan Tribune.
The clashes erupted after students at the main campus of Khartoum’s University staged a protest amid unconfirmed reports that they had burned the premises of the government-run Students Support Fund.
The scale of the protest and the ensuing clashes could not be independently verified but it has been confirmed that police forces were heavily deployed across the University Street, Al-Jamhoria Street and Parliament Streets in downtown Khartoum.
Khartoum and other parts of Sudan recently witnessed a series of limited protests sparked by the rising cost of living but the authorities have so far managed to contain them through the use of force.
