Sudan to bring in foreign farmers

October 27, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese ministry of agriculture has announced it intends to bring foreign farmers to work in the country.

According to the minister of agriculture, Abdel-Halim Al-Mut’afi, the decision was prompted by the fact that many Sudanese farmers had deserted their profession and shifted to gold-mining.

Al-Mut’afi, who made the announcement while addressing the parliament on Wednesday, said that a large number of farmers in the Northern State and Nile River State had flocked to gold-mining areas and are no longer working.

He added that this phenomenon suggests the necessity of seeking foreign employees to cover the deficit.

In mid-December 2010, the ministry of agriculture said it would sign an agreement with its Egyptian counterpart to develop one million acre of the famous Gezira Scheme in central Sudan.

The deal, which opened the door for Egyptian farmers to own lands in Sudan, was however scrapped after protests from the Union of Sudanese Farmers.
