South Sudan opposition party renews demand for release of member

By Ngor Arol Garang

October 31, 2011 (JUBA) – South Sudan’s main opposition party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement for Democratic Change (SPLM-DC) on Monday called for the release of its currently under arrest.

Onyoti Adigo, the leader of the opposition party in the National Assembly on 21 October said in an interview with the South Sudanese newspaper Daily Destiny, that three officials allied to the SPLM-DC were arrested at gunpoint by government agents and driven to an undisclosed location.

He named James Okuk and Sabino Tom as among those arrested at the time, leading to speculation that Okuk was targeted due to anti-government statements he made on the internet.

“Until this moment, we have not seen any concrete evidence. No case has been filed against James Okuk. He remains under detention without being charged or taken to the court,” Adigo told The Destiny on Monday.

“I call on the government to educate and encourage all security organs including those at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to abide and respect the constitution of the Republic of South Sudan. Uphold freedom of speech as well as freedom of expression and more importantly respect for human rights,” explained Adigo.

He argued that the arrest not only contravenes the right to freedom of expression as enshrined in the Transitional Constitution of Republic of South Sudan, but also the bill of rights which gives persons under detention the right to know the cause of their arrest.

“All the procedures followed to arrest James Okuk were wrong. They know he works for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation but did not follow these procedures. They just picked him up without informing his ministry,” said Adigo.

He also claimed that there was not sufficient evidence to support the claim that the articles in question, which criticise the President of South Sudan, was written by Okuk.

    Omoni,

Who really subscribe to Okuk’s education, when he is nothing but worthless human being who ambitions are solely controlled by his visionless kin Dr. lam Akol? Know that you can train a dog very well, but it still maintains it natural instincts of being four-leg creature. Thus, feeminded Okuk may have a doctorate degree but still is the same insane man period!

    Hello Guys,

There is nothing call why Mr James has written a case against the goverment but fact remain as it is said. Do anybody knows what is happening with Somalia ‘s Gov’t? Such a thing will happen in S/Sudan ‘s Gov’t because Loss of civilian life is to be expected in any armed conflict, though regrettable. The Somalia incursion will be no different and Kenyans and Somalians alike should be

You recently introduced some regulations and for a while negative comments were replaced by constructive ones, but it seems like we’re back to square one again.

Ban those vile individuals with nothing to say but destructive comments and tribal bias. You have their details, just delete their accounts and allow for a more mature discussion on this site.

First of all James, you don’t bit the hand that feed you. Okuk need to be in prison for the offense betrayal of trust, and offense of attempting to overthrow the government of south Sudan. Facts, James and Lam assisted north Sudan government against the South during the war. They all must be held accountable for their reckless comments against the government.

Mr Okuk was a man behind the man, i mean he is a victim of party led by Lam Akol.Yes, is true that James Okuk has done more then enough to distroyed south Sudan, but to jailed Mr Okuk a lone and leave Mr Akol to enjoy himself with government accommodation at one of the expensive hotel in Juba is unfair both men should be investigated otherwise,if Lam found not guilty, nothing to imprisoned Okuk.
