Lam Akol denounces rebellion, calls for multiparty democracy in S. Sudan

By Julius N. Uma

November 6, 2011 (JUBA) — Lam Akol, an opposition leader in South Sudan has strongly condemned the armed rebellions fighting against the government of the newly independent country, advocating for a multiparty democracy.

Lam Akol (AP)
Lam Akol (AP)
In his first public appearance since his return from Nairobi last month the leader of the opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – Democratic Change (SPLM_DC), said that the opposition and government should stop considering each other as enemies. The time was ripe, he said, for the two to engage in a dialogue to foster national unity.

“Government should not see the opposition parties as enemies nor should the opposition look at government as a system they can hardly work with. Instead, these two systems of multiparty democracy must co-exist if national dialogue is to be achieved,” he said during a public lecture in Juba, the South Sudan capital on Saturday.

The lecture, which based on the theme, ‘Issues of national dialogue,’ mainly focused on experiences from African countries that achieved independence in the post-colonial era. He also discussed why South Sudan needed dialogue at this critical moment and underlined issues to be discussed at national levels.

The SPLM-DC leader, who received a standing ovation on arrival, also criticised South Sudan’s rampant corruption, which he said had eroded the country. He urged president Salva Kiir to devise stringent measures to ensure that those implicated are prosecuted by law.

He specifically applauded Kiir’s five-point anti-corruption policy, but said that the mandate to fight corruption and all forms of graft should not only be left to the audit chamber and anti-corruption commission, but also include the country’s justice ministry.

Reacting to the auditor general’s recent report presented before the National Assembly, Akol said the financial shortfalls in the accounts were mainly due to government reluctance to institute a proper tax monitoring system.

“A country cannot achieve any meaningful development, unless the government puts in place strong physical and monetary measures to manage the economy,” said SPLM-DC leader amid applause.

According to Akol, the newly independent South Sudan can only achieve meaningful dialogue if issues encompassing good governance, national unity, economic diversity and food security through agriculture are properly addressed by the system in power.

For instance while nearly 80% of the southerners depend on agriculture as the backbone of rural economies, only 4% of the country’s agricultural land is reportedly being used, leaving over a million people food insecure.

The SPLM-DC leader also urged the government to adopt a sound agro-based policy aimed at tapping agricultural potentials in the country. He also called for a massive reduction in government expenditure at the national level.

“For South Sudan to succeed, it needs to adopt a proper strategic plan that addresses the agricultural sector to give a relative competitive edge over other countries in regional markets,” he said.

The SPLM-DC broke away from South Sudan’s ruling party – former rebels the SPLM. Since then the two have had a rocky relationship with the SPLM-DC being accused of by senior SPLM figures of supporting militia groups in South Sudan.

This has always been denied by the SPLM-DC, who threatened to take the SPLM’s secretary general Pagan Amum to court over the issue.

In elections in 2010, SPLM-DC became the largest party in South Sudan’s parliament despite claiming that the vote was not free and fair.

There are at least over 20 parties in South Sudan. Some are runs by one or two people and others by family individuals. This is what complicates multiparty systems. Those who found themselves opposite side or the losing end must also educate their followers that it’s ok to lost elections and not picking up the guns. You must flourish your ideas and then sell them to the public so they can decide i

What mistake are you talking about bro. Contradicting Garang’s idealogy of Unity has never been a mistake. Infact, it’s what majority of South Sudanese enjoy right now if not all of them. What else do you call a mistake made by Riek if I may ask? WELL, YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT RIEK MADE NO MISTAKE!!

Let’s sort things differently. The killing of Bor is not by Riek’s force, but malitia men from Nuer. If you blam Riek because his tribe men did that, yes I would agree with you. Any SPLA comander knows the truth although not all will tell it like it is. The problem is b/n Riek and his leader Garang. Nyandeng can tell you the truth.

Of course, you have to condemn the rebellions so as to be covered by Kiir’s so-called general pardon. Your ridicules SPLM-DC, which is just a version of the SPLM syndicate will be soon reabsorbed into SPLM corrupt regime and that will mark the end of your nonsense opposition within. Think twice!! Not that I condone corruption in South Sudan, but it’s very easy to talk about democracy & corruption especially when you’re the other guy. The problem is that people happen to the other guy. He’s the less clean person when it comes to showing tolerance toward democracy and corruption. Most of you may remember what Charles Charles Kisanga & Sandra Bona said when they left the SPLMDC.

Riek Machar apologized to Malak Ayuen and his Bor Globe in his capacity as individual who is desperate to maintain his pathetic position as a poster vice president in the corrupt government of Kiir and not as a Nuer man simply because Nuer are proud people that don’t know how to sell themselves cheaply to gain positions. The defaction of Riek Machar (P.H.D) from SPLA/M and commited unforgetable crimes by massacred innocent Dinka Bor civilians. And all wars against MonyJang was a dark side of our history which a sound minded Southerners shouldn’t be proud of.

    To DR Lam Akol,

Thank for your wisedom this time, atleast the word multiparty democracy is far better than comaparing S. Sudan with Somalia during Referendum periods.

We can solve our political differences in Juba not Khartoum! The government should not see oppositions as enemies to borrow Akol words.

I hope S. Sudan will developed more than S. Africa if we work togather.

Absolutely nonsences, Dr. Lam is not condeming rampant corruption but is using political ideologies to win people’s heart. He had been in the government for almost three years in Khartoum on the SPLm’s ticket and does not make any change. His party, SPLM-DC is not a political party just a copy and past principle.

The intention of Dr. Lam is to persuade his colleagues, Nuers to under Dr. Riek

Dr. Lam Akol wants to re-invent himself again in South Sudan politics. He can say anything to please the public because he is running in 2015. I’m not surprise to hear him coming around and try to call for multiparty system in the nation. He can fool people like Salva Kiir by giving him this kind of political rhetoric which is not new to many of us except Kiir and his clique. Thanks

Let’s be neutral when judging some other people. I understand though that some Donka, especially Bor wouldn’t judge fairly since they are the victims. And that’s ok becuase not everybody can be liked by everybody in the socity.

Mr. Wani, Lam Akol lost credibility with people in South Sudan long time ago. Akol does not know how to communicate affective in any language anyone can understand. Listen to his news conferences regarding Darfur when he was in Khartoum. He blame people of Darfur who were being slaughtered by Khartoum government. He never once condemn Khartoum for mess killing in Darfur. He should not be trusted.
