Unity state governor concerned by humanitarian response in Mayom county

By Bonifacio Taban Kuich

November 7, 2011 (BENTIU) – Mayom county is facing serious food shortages and health facility problems after clashes between the South Sudan army, the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), and rebel militias.

The government of the Unity state has been critical of the delayed humanitarian aid response.

On the 28 October heavy fighting took place between the SPLA and the rebel South Sudan Liberation Army (SSLA) in which 75 people were killed.

The day before the attack the SSLA released a statement ‘calling upon all NGOs and UN personnel to leave Unity State within a week for their own safety.’

The governor of Unity state, Taban Deng Gai, flew to Mayom on the 31 October with SPLA chief of staff, James Hoth Mai, and South Sudan assistant deputy defence minister, Majak Agot Atem, to asses the civilian and militarily situation in the area after the clash.

Deng held an emergency meeting on Friday calling upon the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Unity state to offer the residents of Mayom county urgent assistance.

“I went to Mayom and I found out big problem, a bag of sorghum of 90kg is going for more than 1000 South Sudanese Pounds [US$370], and actually it is not there in the market, the market is just clear,” said Deng, asking “what are you doing? Do you have any plans and we want you to update us?”

Deng urged NGOs to assist in assessing the road that connect Unity and Lake states and noted that the road connecting Unity state to Khartoum has been closed South Sudan’s independence in July.

World Food Programme (WFP) staff flew in to Mayom county last week to assess the situation of those hit by the clashes.

Nhial Puol, WFP field monitor, told Sudan Tribune “the situation is really getting worse because there is not even a single bag in the market for people to buy.”

Deng expressed his anger regarding the delayed humanitarian response.

Thanks Taban for the concern, however shouldn’t it be something else that you can choose to express your concern? Taban, you have made unforgetable contribution to the struggle for this nation during the war for the South Sudan. Yes you may be doing the same but brother your people have demanded your going away from power and this is what I think you should be doing now to service your history.

It is that there is a sense of nepotism in Unity State. If we tell the detail, Mayom County of Nuer-Bul was the main center for all Nuer rebels in the South. If Taban Deng Gai is really concern about Mayom County, then what about Biemnom County of Dinka Ruweng Community, which was been exterminated by Arabs on April 16,1983? Shame on Taban Deng.

Bul-Nuer of unity state’s county of Mayum and Eastern Jikeny Nuer of Nasser are the greatest and most resilient clans of Nuer since its inception as a tribe. They are the one that oppose the rotten and corrupt SPLA/M militia since the inception of militia from A-2 1983 till today. Thus, those two clans of Nuer tribe deserve respect and special treatment because the fate of RoSS depends on them.

He is trying to groom himself and look like a leader in this approach. Pathetic but i hardly see if any Unity state citizens, especially Mayom County would listen to his sarcastic approach after having ordered the SPLA on many occasions to massacre the Mayom civil populations. Shame on Taban Deng Gai. He needs to step down to relieve Unity state from the his hateful phobia. He is a puppet of Kiir.

Dinka some thing, I am not sure whether I can respond to your verbal abuse or the rest of the message. Anyway I like to say sorry if my post hurt your feeling but I directed this post to Taban Deng Gai NOT you really. Those people you named have nothing to do with this in particular but citizens of Bentiu in general. plse let the peace reach our people. Thanks

Mr. Dinka Dominated, You need to be rest assured that Taban Deng will not run that state forever and id he does so hell with him as leaves. The president has himself known reality about Taban and I doubt you will oppose President Kiir as he is about to issue his mighty presidential decree to relieve him from being the governor. I known you should be among the few benefiting from Taban’s ordeals.
