Egyptian Islamist group admits sending fighters to South Sudan during civil war years

November 16, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – A leading figure in an Egyptian Islamist group revealed in an interview that they sent some of their members to fight with the Sudanese army during the civil war years.

Nageh Ibrahim, a co-founder of al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya in Egypt (.almorakeb.com)
Nageh Ibrahim, a co-founder of al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya and a member of its Shura council, told the Kuwait-based Al-Rai newspaper that some of the group’s members went to Sudan and joined arms with the army in the battle against rebels in south of the country.

But the official said the group regretted taking part in this war.

“This participation was a huge mistake that led to what is Sudan’s fate now,” Ibrahim said.

The people of South Sudan overwhelmingly voted to leave the north in a January referendum, promised in the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) that ended more than two decades of civil war with the north which killed around 2 million civilians and displaced million others.

Last July South Sudan, where most follow Christian and traditional beliefs, officially became an independent state and gained swift recognition from most of the international community including Arab and Muslim countries that supported Khartoum during the civil war years.

Since coming to power in 1989 through a bloodless coup, analysts say that the government of President Omer Hassan al-Bashir has focused on mobilizing people domestically and externally by portraying the war as a foreign plot to strip the country of its Arab-Islamic identity.

Government media at the time reinforced an image of soldiers from Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and allied Popular Defense Forces (PDF) being backed by God and spoke of semi-miracles the fighters encountered during some of the battles.

The leading figure from al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya suggested that they were misguided in their backing of the war and blamed Bashir’s government for splitting up the country.

“The Sudanese regime focused its efforts on Islamizing the south and the Egyptian Islamists considered their participation in the war [was for the cause of] safeguarding Islam” Ibrahim said.

The Egyptian Al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya started originally as a group in the 1970’s that recruited heavily in universities and eventually became hugely influential among students. They grew more militant in nature and were accused of stoking violence in college campuses and later outside the academic institutions, particularly during the 1990s.

One of the group’s founders, Tarek al-Zumar, and his cousin Abboud, were convicted of involvement in the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in 1981.

In 2003 the group officially renounced violence and the Egyptian government started releasing of its members from jail afterwards.

A court ruled last month that the Islamist group can form its own political party paving the way for its participation in the upcoming elections.

    Nageh Ibrahim ,

You don’t need to regret because you send them to Heaven so they are in heaven. Now what is your problem ? Any sound minded Southern Sudanese knows very well that Egypt is fueling the war in South including the resently mass killing in Darfur just because they are blacks.

This is exactly why religion and state must be separated.

And yes, we’ll strip the country of its imposed Arab identity. However, we don’t deny there’s Arabic rooted culture here but to confirm that its an imposed ideology given the colonial history and that there’s a significant African culture suppressed to promote Arabic heritage.

Those guys would do what they usually do, defend the indefensible and claim its patriotism & loyalty to their country. Oh, and ofcourse, their religion, which is misused by the leaders they glorify.

It will take a generation to change such indoctrinated mind frames.

Sour grapes, and the notion of “had we known then what we know now” is not enough. Undo your crimes and remedy your sins by standing up against Khartoum’s continuous heinous massacre of your Muslim brothers and sisters in Darfur, Nuba Mountains, and southern Blue Nile.

We are aware of some Arab world sending their troops to fight South Sudan. These includes Bin Laden from 1992-1996. There were many Iraqis also killed in South Sudan that is why there is a place call ‘Jebel Iraq’ on Juba- Yei road.Without the support from these Arabs Bashir could have been removed long time.

    Gabriel KK,

Your statement is not true! Not all Arab countries took part in the war against the South. Libya, Saudi Arabia, South Yemen, and many more have not participated. As matter of facts, These Arab & Muslims countries supported the SPLA/SPLM with logistics, weaponry, and ammunition to fight Khartoum’s different regimes. Be honest and tell the truth, for the truth is mitigating.

It’s just like DKK comment. When, where, and what conference did IOC visioned that South Sudan must be Islamized under it umbrella? Don’t comment through hate please! Be opened minded.

It’s well known in South Sudan that Khartoum was backed by many Muslim-countries during the war with South. I agree with one gentleman from Nuba Mts who complained on Youtube that Egyptian forces deployed in the area are actually cooperating with SAF. He said that SAF has step up their bombardments targeting areas where civilians are hiding. He suspected Egyptians to be relying the message to SAF

Do not take early helping of Libya to SPLA as an evident that Libya did not fight against the South Sudan rebel. Libya fought against the SPLA by using its war planes. If you want to verify my claim, go to Akuaideng, you will find a wreckage of Libyan war plan from which Libyan Plot was captured. Libya was helping during Japer Nimery rule but changed it support from SPLA when Nimery lost power. What forced me to comment here I see many people truth out about Libya fighting against the South Sudan. And I asure you ladies and gentle men, nothing wrong should be done against whoever was fighting against South Sudan in the past. We archived our right. That is how the world is, somebody can be your enemy today and tomorrow be your friend.

Arabs everywhere propagate and fooling most Africans that they are gainst Western Colonization while they themselves are colonizers who want to impose their Arab culture and idolic beliefs on others. This hypocrisy must end in Africa. I think we south Sudanese will be an obtacle to such malicious intents. There will never be an entry of Arab identity into Easy African as long as we live.
