Sudan downplays report of new ICC warrant, suggests it is not Darfur related
November 16, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese government downplayed reports that the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) will soon file a new case with the judges against defence minister Abdel-Rahim Mohamed Hussein.
The Dubai-based Al-Arabiya TV said this week that the warrant will be requested by next week at the latest. No details were provided on the charges pressed against the top military official in Sudan.
There was no confirmation from the ICC on the report.
The Sudanese presidential adviser Mustafa Osman Ismail told reporters that such a move is an extension of a campaign targeting the country.
He also ruled out that the warrant could be executed if approved suggesting that the case is not Darfur-related which would be a violation of the mandate bestowed upon the ICC by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in its 2005 referral.
Ismail further stressed his confidence in the ability of the country’s diplomacy to quash any moves by the Hague-based tribunal.
The ICC has so far opened four cases related to Darfur including one against President Omer Hassan al-Bashir who was charged with ten counts of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
In addition to the case against Bashir, the ICC is also seeking the arrest of two government figures namely South Kordofan governor Ahmed Haroun and militia leader Ali Kushayb for 51 counts of crimes against humanity and war crimes.
The African Union (AU) has backed Bashir against the ICC and directed its members not to arrest Bashir even if they are signatories to the Rome Statute which created the court.

Hague base court of ICC should not intervene with Africa Union AU backing on Bashir arrest warrant on charge against humanity, since Bashir has been doing atrocity and AU has turned blind eye. However the culprit shall faces the law as the saying goes”no person above the law” I wish ICC prosecutor shall takes action against this issue rather than talking.

You are right my people, talking alone doesnot mean solution to the case. it should be a continuation of the action.

The ICC is only used to increase political pressure on NCP government, its not about justice for the victims of their oppression.
Otherwise they wouldn’t have attempted to do deals with Bashir before his indictment. Its just a political tool by other means, hence war criminals in powerful nations don’t even get investigated let alone indicted.
