Sudan votes in favor of UNGA resolution condemning alleged plot on Saudi ambassador to US
November 18, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese government on Friday voted in favor of a resolution by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) condemning an alleged assassination plot targeting the Saudi Ambassador in Washington, Adel al-Jubeir, that was uncovered last month.
The Saudi-crafted resolution, co-sponsored by some 60 other countries, said the UNGA “deplores the plot to assassinate the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United States of America”.
It also calls on Iran “to comply with all of its obligations under international law” by cooperating with investigations.
The United States charged on Iranian-American man by the name of Manssor Arbabsiar of involvement. Another Iranian, Gholam Shakuri, is still wanted and believed to be in Iran.
Arbabsiar has allegedly said he organized the hit on behalf of a cousin, whom he described as a high-ranking officer in the Quds Force, a special operations unit of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards.
China voted against the resolution and Russia, Brazil, South Africa and India were among UN Security Council members who abstained. Most of the votes against the resolution came from Latin American countries who said it set a dangerous precedent when no one had been proven guilty of the assassination plot.
The Sudanese ambassador to the UN Dafalla al-Haj Osman also expressed the same concerns despite supporting the resolution.
“Sudan does not support the incrimination of any country without sufficient and substantiated legal evidence by specialized legal bodies….this resolution should not represent a precedence and should be taken into its proper context” Osman said.
Despite Sudan’s good relations with Iran it likely decided to side with the rich Arab Gulf state of Saudi Arabia particularly as it is undergoing severe economic crisis.

This is a very classic uncharacteristic of opportunistic criminals who keep changing depending on the direction the wind is blowing. Perhaps, they should take this lesson “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
