Ethiopia, South Sudan leaders discuss North-South tension
By Tesfa-Alem Tekle
November 20,2011 (ADDIS ABABA) – The president of South Sudan, Salva Kiir, on Saturday visited Addis Ababa to hold talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi, on a number of bilateral and regional issues, mainly focusing on peace and security concerns between North and South Sudan.
According to the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two leaders exchanged views on the rising tension along the North-South Sudan border and on other pending post-secession issues.
Since South Sudan officially gained independence in July, the two countries have been trading accusations of destabilisation by arming one the other’s rebel group.
Tensions between the two neighbours further escalated when Sudan subjected Yida refugee camp, in Unity state, South Sudan, to aerial bombardment on 10 November.
This action led to calls from both the UN and AU urging the governments in Khartoum and Juba to exercise restraint and to refrain from further aggravating the already tense situation along the border.
During his talks with Zenawi, Kirr accused the Khartoum government of continuous hostility against South Sudan.
Kiir also briefed the Ethiopian officials on the status of the outstanding issues of Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), the signing of which ended more than two decades of civil war between North and South Sudan in 2005.
The South Sudanese president reiterated his country’s commitment to a peaceful settlement of the CPA’s outstanding issues.
Zenawi reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to ensuring lasting peace and prosperity in both Sudans.
The leaders of the two countries have reached an agreement to soon hold a joint ministerial commission meeting in Juba in a bid to promote common regional growth.
Kiir and Zenawi also discussed trade, investment and ways of further enhancing economic relations between the two neighbours.
President Kiir travelled during the week to Kampala and Nairobi to brief the Kenyan and Ugandan leaders about the recent tensions with the Sudan.
