Jonglei: Ayod county increases food production
November 23, 2011 (JUBA/BOR) — Farmers in Ayod country of Jonglei state in South Sudan this year recorded increased crop production, as part of the government’s nationwide initiative to boost food security at household levels.
OVMI, a local humanitarian organisation dealing with advocacy, human rights and democracy, is currently actively working with United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to address food security issues in the county.
“We managed to train the farmers on how to tilt their farms and store the seeds before we distributed the seeds that were provided by UNFAO in partnership with OVMI in the County,” a seemingly excited Tot said by phone.
He said specifically that ground nuts were the most widely harvested crop this
year, and urged non-governmental organisations building capacities of farmers in the county to focus on imparting skills to local community farmers.
In September this year, a rapid food assessment report released by the country’s agriculture and forestry revealed that nearly one million remain food insecure, with the Jonglei and Upper Nile said to be the most affected.
Nearly 80% of the South Sudanese depend on agriculture as the backbone of the rural economy. Sadly, however, only 4% of the country’s agricultural land is said to be adequately utilised by the population.
Meanwhile, Thoi Chany, the Ayod county commissioner also appealed to investors to consider investing in oil producing machines that can be used to extract oil from the ground nuts, as an alternative income generating project.
“When such a machine can be put in place then we can be assured of engaging youth to generate income that would empower them economically,” said Thany.

Congratulations to Ayod community. This is what we want to hear and see happening. Our people taking step forward on food production to reduce dependency on NGOs food supply. We have rich fertile soil that can be put to good use to boost food production. More food production will reduce the likelyhood of communities in Jonglei state to attack one another.communities in the south need to do this.
