November 24, 2011 (LONDON) – Rebels responsible for a recent spate of attacks on the South Sudanese army in Unity state claim to have captured 45 soldiers and a colonel.
In a statement released on 24 November the South Sudan Liberation Army (SSLA) rebels urge citizens and humanitarian workers to evacuate Mayom, Unity state, ahead of their attack, “in one week.”
The SSLA invite the International Committee of the Red Cross to evaluate the conditions under which their prisoners, including Colonel Yien Kurwai, are being held in Mankien, 10km south of Mayom.
They describe a skirmish “on the way between Bentiu and Mayom town,” on 23 November in which two pickup trucks and two lorries “full of rations that were destined for the feeding of SPLA forces in Mayom,” were captured.
As well as the Mayom attack, the SSLA forewarn of an attack on Benitu, the state capitalm which necessitates an evacuation before 1 December, on which day “the commercial flights to Bentiu must stop.”
These attacks will be part of Operation Ending Corruption which they plan to implement “in every corner” of Unity state. This will require a widespread relocation of citizens, humanitarian workers and those working in the oil sector.
The South Sudan army spokesperson has described the SSLA as Khartoum’s “mercenaries”. .
In October the Small Arms Survey found evidence in weapon seizures which could implicate Khartoum in the Unity state rebels.
The SSLA also state their rejection of the planned relocation of the South Sudanese capital form Juba to Ramciel.

President Kiir and his cabinets should find way to crash those rebels militarily. Pervading complain by SPLM will not solve anything unless they deal with them militarily. In fact, if it’s true that those rebels manage to capture 45 soldiers from SPLA then they are weak. No matter how much support they received from Khartoum, I believe they brave SPLA warrior can still beat them easily.
