South Sudan imports 6.4 million tons of items through Kenya’s port

November 27, 2011 (MOMBASA) – South Sudan this year imported more than six million tons of items through the port of Mombasa, Kenya, authorities there have revealed.

Monbassa Port, Kenya (FILE)
The revelation was made as South Sudan’s Vice-President Riek Machar visited Mombasa Port on Saturday in the company of a host of ministers and deputy ministers from South Sudan’s government in order to acquaint themselves with the facilities and operations of Kenya’s Ports Authority (KPA).

The South Sudanese officials were received at Mombasa Port by KPA’s senior management staff who explained how the port operates. The vice-president then toured various sections of the port and explored the facilities offered by the port’s authority.

During the visit, KPA revealed that South Sudan was third largest user of the port with 6.4 million tons of items imported through Mombasa this year. KPA further stated that the overall shipment this year amounted to 19.1 million tons.

Since it gained independence from Sudan in July this year, landlocked South Sudan has been shifting its dependency on Port Sudan in north Sudan to the port of Mombasa. Other landlocked countries using Mombasa port for exports and imports include Uganda, DR Congo and Ethiopia.

According to the Vice President’s Press Secretary James Gatdet Dak, KPA officials assured Machar that South Sudan shall continue to use Port Mombasa until the project of constructing a new port at Lamu in south-western Kenya is completed.

The new Lamu Port is being built as part of a plan to construct an oil pipeline to the East African coast in order to negate South Sudan’s need for continuing exportation of its oil through north Sudan.

Sudan and South Sudan are yet to finalise an agreement on the fees Juba should pay for the use of Khartoum’s pipeline infrastructure

KPA also said it was implementing a project to establish a dry port in Eldoret in Western Kenya in order to serve as storage of items destined for South Sudan.

Another dry port may be established in Juba as a distribution centre for the other nine states in South Sudan, according to KPA’s manager, Gichiri Ndua, who also said South Sudan could be granted the right to own and operate its own ships or vessels at Mombasa Port.

The solution is to Diversify our trading and selling of our oil. Since Khartoum tends to be slow and nostalgic about South Sudan, then we have to request Kenya for better relation and we keep importing from Kenya. Take one pipeline to Kenya, and one to Khartoum if Khartoum accept our shipment later. Thanks

This is a good Idea, let the Khartoum increase more desperation and that pipeline must be close. SPLA/SPLM have spent almost 22years without payroll and it work, does Khartoum regime thinks building oil pipeline will take 22 years.?

Actually, I am a Dinka by tribe and I have been a supporter of Nuer tribe because of being courageous but now, it came to time that I have really fully confused because Nuer Tribe comes to be weak in Politics and start to persist in violent which is completely bad. South Sudanese need only those who convince them but not those who kill them to accept please.

Do you think that if Nuer comes up as a President, will Dinka rebell and fight against Nuer and this what Nuer communities are doing now. We should allow South sudan to settle please, instead of poor thinking and unacceptable acts. I see always, writings from Nuer communities that corrupt Dinka government. Yes it is corrupt but not Dinka goverment, it is South Sudanese government which is corrupt.

Those idiots in the north thought that they are going to starve us to death in one month after independence by closing their shits, but what happened now is just showing how foolish and evil they are. Our christian brothers are more than ready to help us. I wish we could build a wall to separate us since we no longer benefit from each other.

Bush@, that’s correct, man sometime become stubborn if not put under control. We very much need to deals with brothers in the North smartly. In Europe, white built a huge tall concrete fence that obstruct Berlin from the rest of Europe and it happen. I did not remember exactly the time in History. NCP regime thought their formalar will work, I do not see any job done by that formalar.

By the way, is Dr. Riek Machar, a minister of commerce, or a vice president? This is the real problem in our South Sudan where our leaders have no clue about the function of their jobs. Dr.Riek Machar Teny, should not have to make a tour to Mombasa for that matter, unless for other political issue. The only person who have right to go is the South Sudan Minister of Commerce.

Most of them are Reik’s supporters who are still on the payrolls in Khartoum. However, do not worry, we will prevail over them. They know how to talk, but they don’t know how to think.
