Mirghani’s son rejects any position in government, criticizes DUP stance
November 27, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The son of a major opposition leader in Sudan issued a statement saying that he has no intention of joining the new government, contrary to earlier media reports.
Mohamed al-Hassan al-Mirghani told the Hurriyat news portal by phone from the United States that he will not take part in a “war government to fight my people and countrymen. I will not bear the sins of 22 years of corruption and tyranny”.
Al-Mirghani’s father Mohamed Osman has confirmed this week that the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) he leads accepted the offer by the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) to join the upcoming government.
The DUP chief has been strongly opposed to participating for months before agreeing this week. Many leading figures within the party have fiercely criticized the move and warned of looming division within the DUP as a result.
Al-Mirghani’s son also criticized his father’s decision in a rare move of its kind.
“The leadership council is not the competent authority to make such big decisions, which are the prerogative of the elected political bureau alone” he said.
Mohamed al-Hassan al-Mirghani also stressed that he will not assume any position in the government dismissing reports that he is DUP nominee to become assistant of Sudanese president Omer Hassan al-Bashir.
