During the attack JEM rebels killed 53 policemen who escorted a convoy from Khartoum heading to Nyala the capital of South Darfur. They also sized some vehicles and looted provisions.

A special court on Darfur crimes headed by Tayeb Al-Amin Bashir, judge of the Supreme Court, held in El Fasher on Tuesday sentenced to death by hanging seven JEM fighter for their participation in the attack in Khor Biscuit area.

The Deputy General Prosecutor for Darfur crimes, al-Fateh Tayfur, said that the court issued a guilty verdict against seven out of ten defendants under the counter terrorism law and sentenced them to death by hanging.

He further said they have the right to appeal before the signing of the execution order by the President of the Republic. The judges excluded three children who are under 18 from criminal liability for their participation in this attack.

JEM spokesperson Gibreel Adam Bilal denounced the trial and described the court as “Inquisition Courts implementing the political will of the regime.” He further said they are prisoners of war and should not be sentenced to death under international laws.

He also stressed that such “masquerade” will not deter the determination of JEM fighters to overthrow the regime in a joint action with the other rebel groups of Kauda alliance.

Talks to reach a peaceful settlement for Darfur conflict between the two parties are deadlock since July of this year when JEM refused to ink a frame work document for peace in Darfur and asked to open it for talks.

Khartoum refused the request and said in a first time they have three months to join it but under international pressures, the government said they can join it any time.
