Libya new rulers willing to normalise relation with Chad – Sudanese president
November 29, 2011 (KHARTOUM) –Sudanese president Omer al-Bashir Monday said that the new rulers of Libya are welling to normalise relations with Chad which was accused of supporting militarily Gaddafi regime to crush their revolution
Gaddafi who ruled Libya during 42 years played an important role in the political stability of his southern neighbour, Chad. He and Bashir help Idriss Deby to overthrow the former president Hussein Habri in 1990.
However, while Sudan supported the Libyan revolutionaries, the Chadian president was accused of sending well trained men to fight the insurgency. Before the intervention of the international force, Deby also slammed the NTC members and accused them of working with Islamists.
President al-Bashir informed the speaker of the Chadian parliament Haroun Kabadi of Libyan government readiness to restore bilateral ties and to open a new page in relations the two countries, said the official news agency SUNA.
In a meeting attended by the Ahmed Ibrahim Taher the speaker of the National Assembly, Bashir further stressed Sudan’s keenness to strengthen and develop relations with Chad.
The new head of Libyan state Mahmoud Abdel Jalil was last week end in the Sudanese capital to attend a convention of the ruling National Congress Party. He hailed Sudan’s support to their armed struggle against Gaddafi and pledged economic investments in the poor country.
Different sources said Chadian rebels offered their support to the Libyan NTC in a bid to find a new host country after their expulsion from Sudan.
Kabadi told reporters on Monday that he discussed with Bashir on the issue of Chadian students affected by the anti- black African resentment after the Libyan revolution. He said they demanded Khartoum to accept them in the Sudanese universities.
The Chadian minister of education will arrive to Khartoum shortly to discuss the issue with the concerned authorities, he added.
Recently Sudan was angered by the return of Khalil Ibrahim leader of rebel Justice and Equality Movement to Darfur through the Chadian territory. However Deby reiterated his support o Khartoum and pledged to cooperate for peace in Darfur.
Sudan, which mediated between Chad and Libya, says working to improve its relations with the neighbouring countries to prevent rebel groups from any external support.
