S. Sudan opposition party sacks 2 ministers from top leadership

December 2, 2011 (JUBA) – An opposition party in South Sudan has sacked two of its leaders who are serving as ministers in the current government accusing them of corruption and acting in their own interest.

In an impromptu inauguration meeting held in Juba, the South Sudan capital on Friday, the mainstream South Sudan Democratic Forum (SSDF) announced it had withdrawn its confidence from Martin Elia Lomoro and Mayom Kuoc Malek, hitherto the party’s chairperson and his deputy respectively.

“It is unfortunate that these leaders have advanced self-interest more than anything else, used the party’s name to position themselves in the government without contributing to its programme and policies, and subdued the democratic process that was at the centre of our core values as a forum,” the party said in a statement seen by Sudan Tribune.

Lomoro currently serves as South Sudan’s minister for animal resources and fisheries, while Malek is the deputy minister for transport. The SSDF allege the way the ministers have acted lacks “representation” focusing on their own promotion and “self interest”.

During the meeting, party members appointed Michael Wal Duany as the new party chairperson, who will be deputised by three other senior members. Three advisors and members of the national leadership council, among other keys posts, were also agreed upon.

The mainstream SSDF also accuses its former chairperson of involvement in embezzling funds, reportedly given to the party by the southern government during the April 2010 general elections.

Attempts to reach the animal resources and fisheries minister to verify these claims from the party proved unsuccessful.

Founded in 2001 in the UK by concerned South Sudan political parties, civic organisations and movements, the mainstream SSDF’s main principle and objective was to bring peace and unity among the people of South Sudan by embracing forgiveness and reconciliation.

This is so great, I urge the people of South Sudan to stand firm with opposition parties, they are the only our breathing space, otherwise if we don’t do so, then we will be at dooms in Mayardit administration, which is full of friendship and nobody is being recognized if he is not a friend or tribe mate. Thanks to Democratic Party, and make sure all people are for us. Long live SSDF.

I wouldn’t regard this as great. This might be a conspiracy since SSDF comprises a majority of one section in South Sudan. The appointment of Michael Wal Duany revealed a hidden agenda to intellectuals like me. I lived closed with Wal Duany in the past, and I know his politics. Wal Duany’s politics has no difference from Nafie Ali Nafie’s, and leader of Janyajaweed militia in Sudan.

The whole system in Juba is corrupt, you have to start with the head of the goverment,i do not see any genuine reasons of singling out individuals named, the issue i have understood in this saga is power wrengling within the party leadership, and it had nothing to do with corruption.

I agreed with you! their dismissal had nothing to do with corruption. Their party itself, want to institutionalized the corruption by appointing someone else into these position whom they will indoctrinated them to embedded their party ideology into the state policy! This move is so stupid! ppl who are in such positions, they only executed the oders of the state, not party’s interet!

    Dear Southerners,
Opposition leader who sacked those ministers has no conscience and what they are trying to do is totally baseless. How comes that somebody working for the people in the government be sacked by opposition while the head of the country has no information, that is absolutely nonsense. If those minister are working in the gov. as shadow minister then, the leader of opposition is ok.

It is a system of anarchy! How can the opposition party fire official working with state! They can only revoke the emembership or they can fire someone working in their office!membership is the only identity they are responsible for. they cannt fire any official unless through voting of check and balance! opposition has no constrain law to any citizens, until when the executed the office of state

I do understand! revoking of membership and sacking from position are difference. you cant sack someone in position when your not boss! party can revoke their membership but they cant SACKING! That position they are in, is not their party jurdiction! So where did the term sack came from, if it is not madness n foolish! opposition have no representative on the level of nomination in any gov

All those so-called opposition political parties are a waste of resources, time, energy etc. Southern Sudan isn’t and won’t be a democratic country as long as SPLM syndicate still owns its militia, the notorious SPLA. Any party that wants to compete with SPLM must own a military wing in order to safeguard its strategies till a national army, that won’t affiliate to any political party, is created.

Otherwise, SPLM will continue to loot and embezzle public monies, rig elections, monopoly RoSS’s affairs, manipulate and bribe members of various political parties against their own parties etc. In order to make a real different that can lead to the regime change in RoSS, all political opposition parties must coordinate joint efforts with armed movements.

This is just a good example of cleaning up the system. This will tell the party in leadership that the opposition mean zero tolerance on corruption that will gain them an up hand when it comes marol values of its leaders. I just hope it is not power wrengling in corruption skin. God bless for the good job you are doing in your party.
