Canada to assist Unity state development projects

By Bonifacio Taban Kuich

December 7, 2011 (BENTIU) – The commissioner of Unity state’s Payinjiar county, Peter Gai Joak, received two visitors from Canada’s department for Citizenship and Immigration on 2 December, organised through the Payinjiar Community Association (PCA) in Canada.

During the two day stay at the county headquarters the visitors discussed development and capacity building issues, in the wake of South Sudan’s independence in July.

Judith Boer a lawyer from the department said, that they hoped their visit would allow them to raise funds for community projects in Payinjiar county. They plan to build a secondary school and will offer scholarships to students from the county. She added they will also assist in opening nursery schools and nutritional health centres.

“There is need to eradicate the high rate of illiteracy” and increase access to education, Boer said.

Commissioner Joak welcomed the visit adding that, “South Sudan being a new born nation needs more flourishing donors for their assistance to support us in terms of development of [a] war torn country”, said Joak.

Before a 2005 peace deal South Sudan had experienced civil war for most of the last 55 years.

The delegates promised that they will do what they can to make sure that all the projects were implemented.

In an interview with AFP, Joemat-Pettersson gave the example of the new country of South Sudan, where she said “close to 40% of its land surface has already been sold” to foreign interests.

“They bring in their own labour, they bring in their own equipment, soil, seeds, they use the soil of the host country and then they move off. They leave very little behind or they may leave depleted land.”
